Conservatism vs. authoritarianism: The British vs. the U.S. right

While British conservatives oppose mild increases in government detention and surveillance powers, American "conservatives" support endless expansion of those powers.

Not much

Since the government was presumbly designed by, for, and of the people, it is disturbing that there remains anyone who supports the republican regime. It must be habit or the seduction of the familiar. If it doesn't fly like a duck, walk like a duck, or quack like a duck, the damn thing could be anything else, but it is not a duck.

The U.S. Right has turned what was once our government into a government by the wealthy, for the wealthy, while screwing everyone else. If liberals were as anxious to be corrupted as the radical elitists currently manipulating the executive branch, news media, intelligence agencies, and some big business interests they would be preaching for weekly orgies instead of Sunday services. They would have declared victory if it wasn't for the stubborn Joint Chiefs who refuse to become traitors. The Joint Chiefs are the only ones standing between what we have and tyranny.

WT, in case you visit the thread again.

Thanks for the clarification. I admit I wasn't considering Obama's pedigree in this equation because I just don't think that way. To me it doesn't matter whether a person is white, black, brown, red, yellow, or purple with green stripes. I tend to base my evaluations on what a person says and what a person does and how closely what they say matches what they do.

The reason that I don't see Obama as a solution is my firm belief that there are no solutions; there are only problems. Anything that looks like a solution is merely a redefinition of the problem.

Authentic conservatism

Honesty in politics? Not if winning is the only thing. Radical right-wingers will stop at nothing to control the economy, our minds, THE WORLD. I recall that the Third Reich Nazis originally masqueraded as socialists, opposed to "Bolshevism." So who is the enemy today? Reason? Fairness? Equality? Justice?

Right or Left

I think it has less to do with ideology, and more to do with power. If Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, or Ted Kennedy were President and they were doing the same things Bush is doing, than American Conservatives would be protesting as we speak. But, since it's one of their own in power, loyalty will trump Patriotism any day of the week.

Barry Goldwater once said that, "History will probably find that Conservatives of my ilk will be called Liberals." Today I suppose he wouldn't be to supprised that Libertarians like Ron Paul and conservatives like Chuck Hagel are being label liberals. Because the fact is it was never a matter of ideology, it's a matter of power and who has that power. When out of power Liberals and Conservatives speak of Liberty, and Democracy, but when they're in power, the words "Security", or the "Greater Good", will be like a mantra.

“The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected.”

Homeland

Thom Hartman publicly related the word "homeland" to its source on an over the air broadcast in the US last week. Next we may be discussing publicly the derivation of the whole terrorism lexicon. Don't you love millionaire tobacco lawyers' touching concern for a phenomenon that has caused fewer deaths in all human history than their product kills in one day?

Maybe and what if...

...Republicans like Charlton Heston have known all along of the Fascist agenda now being rolled out across the US and has been clinging to his rifle with his frozen, dead hand for just an occasion? Not realy knowing Heston's true political ideology, this is just a bit of speculation but you know here in Australia one of the first acts of the so called "conservative" Howard government was to disposses most Aussies of their guns after a massacre in Tasmania. This could have been because Howard, as a strident lackey of the Bush cabal knew something too. As happened under Hitler, the Nazi agenda was not fully exposed until way too late and the destruction of German democracy was all but complete. The ability of fascists to roll out there agenda in virtual immunity and under secret has been their hallmark for generations and their desire to 'disappear' their opponents, whether they be domestic or otherwise has also been part of their Modus Operandi. As it is, you Americans can be thankful there are still those, like Glenn Greenwald, with the guts and intellect to alert you to the roll out of the fascist agenda under Bush & Co. And Glenn please start calling it what it is, FASCISM! Hopefully as you begin to claim back your constituitional rights the greater part of the American public will join you in a resounding chorus of "Enough is enough" and send these fascists back into the fetid holes from which they emerged or better still jail them all. The world is watching with bated breath. Please America, do not let that glorious Eagle be turned into a Chicken Hawk.

Jeffrey P Harrsion...

..should go to the real authority on fascism, benito Mussolini himself. See my link.

Generational fascism has its expression in Bush and is one of the major tenets of Mussolini's philosophy as outlined in the piece pointed to by my link. Bush's predecessors had close links with the European fascists and through their giving of oil technology to Hitler aided the nazi ascension to power. Each Bush generation has shown a tendency to fascism and this last one is no exception. In fact he has almost completed what his grandfather began all those years ago. As well as the link google zeitgeistmovie.com and download the movie.

If Bush is Mussolini ...

... how come the trains don't run on time?

Thanks again Glen...

for reminding us what true conservatism and political principle looks like.
