How telecoms are attempting to buy amnesty from Congress

Lobbyist disclosure forms and campaign contribution records illuminate the sleazy process by which our key laws are written.

The letters thread is now closed.

It's kinda cool

But, why i used Capra, i think it's needed to really reach and teach an acclamated majority of this nation's inhibitants what Mr Smith was/is battling for us and holding against the cartelocracy.

When Renzo channels Durante. Or is that Mort Sahl?

Thanks for the update

Your exposure of the dynamics at play in the warrantless wiretap issue & retroactive immunity for telecoms engaged in blatantly criminal behavior is incredibly heartening, Glenn. I appreciate your tenacity on the issue. I continue to contact my congressional representatives to demand action on the corporate illegality and hypocrisy and the complicity of corrupt elected officials. Investigate, Impeach, Imprison!

NO WAY, JOSE!!!!!

"Telecoms attempting to buy immunity from Congress?"

WHAT A MISHIGOSS*, A BLOODY FREAKING UNHOLY MESS!!!!!

THEIR AFTER-THE-FACT FRANTIC PARDONS THEY HURRIEDLY SEEK

THROUGH LOBBYING BRIBERY TO CAGEILY AND DESPICABLY SNEAK

ABSOLVEMENT FOR THEIR Bush-ACCESSORY HIGH CRIMES, NO LESS!!!!!

*-A complex, annoying, stressful problem, made all the more frustrating in that it could have been prevented if "certain people" had simply "used their brains" beforehand!!!!!

Let's be fair here

Dear Glenn,

It seems easy enough that those who have received monies from the parties involved would recuse themselves from all votes. That's what a impartial person would do.

Maybe get McCain's people back on the horn and see if the senator would introduce legislation to that effect. You know he is a real straight shootin' maverick kind of a guy and this would be a no brainer for him.

Thanks for your good work,

Conrad C. Elledge

Why Jebbie

That nearly gave me the vapors. Oh, not the "up against the wall with the mothers," but the extreme country twang that has been known to make me curl in fetal position and fear the world.

I've donated

To the add attack against Carney twice. As soon as the next campaign you mention, Glenn, starts up I'll donate to that one too. Keep 'em coming and I'll give what I cannot actually afford because the Constitution is more important than gas money (and pretty much everything else too).

I will happily unseat any number of Democraps, if that is what it takes, to put the rule of law and the Bill of Rights as supreme over all other considerations. Exactly the way the Founders intended.

You could have economized on the use of letters of the alphabet, Glenn --

". . . . the McCain statement bizarrely says that McCain "continue[s] to support renewal of the Foreign Intelligence and Surveillance Act" even though FISA hasn't expired and isn't up for "renewal." Whoever wrote that statement is obviously quite confused about the basic facts governing the current dispute."

Emphasis mine.

One of Twain's rules was, never use two words when one will do. Another was, never use a big word when a little one will do.

That one little word:

lying.

Lobbyists and "Libertarians" --

I'd love to see some of the blogs talk about why we are all so fearful of hearing different points of view in the debates because I think until we stop being afraid of third party candidates that we will continue to find our choices limited to electing corporate Democrats or corporate Republicans. I think until we have some Green Party and Libertarian Congressional representatives challenging the Democrats and Republicans that we will never be able to break the grip of the lobbyists.

-- pmorlan Saturday, May 24, 2008 08:41 AM

Clue: "Libertarians" are REICH-WINGERS who believe in unfettered gree -- I mean, capitalism. They PRO-CORPORATE. In short: they'd eat up the cash from lobbyists.

The reason non-neophytes don't vote third party is because third party candidates are almost invariably lunatic fringe crackpots, "Libertarians" being quintessentially that.

@Mona, did you watch the ALP Convention?

"Libertarians Betrayed" - by Richard Viguerie?

As has been reported elsewhere, the interactive and always interesting blog Third Party Watch has been purchased by Richard Viguerie. For those who don't know the name, Viguerie is the direct-mail guru of Reagan conservatism, and one of the most important figures in the history of that movement. Mr. Viguerie is not known as an intellectual powerhouse, and has admitted as much himself, but he has been an effective fundraiser and organizer for years. His other major website, Conservative Headquarters, is linked on our blogroll.

While I cannot say anything unpleasant about Mr. Viguerie the man, his purchase of Third Party Watch comes at a curious time. It turns out that Viguerie is a primary fundraiser for the candidacy of Bob Barr who is seeking the Libertarian Presidential nomination. As LP co-founder David Nolan notes here, Viguerie has been involved in attempts to takeover existing third parties before as a way of pushing his agenda. Third Party Watch was one of the most open and lively discussion venues on the net for coverage of the LP, but Viguerie's purchase of the site should raise serious questions about its impartiality down the road.

Meanwhile several folks previously affiliated with Third Party Watch have started their own site, Independent Political Report. Obviously IPR is an upstart site, but the format is very similar to TPW's and we have added it to our blogroll.

The LP convention is going on as we speak, and I expect something of a fire fight. It is entirely possible that the controversial tactics utilized by the Barr campaign will become an issue with delegates. To add fuel to this potentially catastrophic inferno, the overtly non-libertarian Richard Viguerie will be giving the keynote address.

A friend of mine this week advised me to "lay off" Bob Barr for the time being, arguing that his recent toe-to-toe exchange with Neal Boortz over foreign policy could be a good sign of Barr "coming around". I hope this proves to be true, but the apparent coup attempt taking place within the LP by Barr loyalists is troubling and ought not be ignored.

Christine Smith's anti-endorsement of Barr got booed.

Who is mistaken? --

Logical fallacy, Glenn

You mistakenly assume every lobbying dollar is spent on this single issue.

Words from the distant past ...

"The cities have turned into jungles,
and corruption is stranglin' the land.
The police force is watching the people,
and the people just can't understand.
We don't know how to mind our own business,
'cause the whole world's got to be just like us.
Now we are fighting a war over there.
No matter who's the winner, we can't pay the cost.
'Cause there's a monster on the loose,
it's got our heads into the noose.
And it just sits there... watching." (Steppenwolf 1969)

As always, we recall that Democrats and Republicans both support the idea that America exists to kill others. A small (not complete) list of recent USA invasions would include:

Korea, 1950–53

Lebanon, 1958

Vietnam, 1961–73

Laos, 1964–73

Dominican Republic, 1965–66

Cambodia, 1969–70

Lebanon, 1982–84

Grenada, 1983

Libya, 1986

Panama, 1989

Iraq, 1991– ongoing

Somalia, 1992–94

Croatia, 1994

Haiti, 1994

Bosnia, 1995

Sudan, 1998

Afghanistan, 1998

Yugoslavia, 1999

Afghanistan, 2001– ongoing

----------------------

On this holiday weekend, let us remember that wars are impossible to wage unless men and women will become warriors to carry out the wishes of the rulers. One must always ask, "do I really want to make killing my profession"? May god have mercy on us all, far too many say yes to the question.
