It is possible to literally name the US servicemen and women who die (indeed, that is the basis for your Vietnam war memorial), but the margin of error when it comes to the civilian populations of the countries you are "freeing" from the tyranny of communism and 'evil' dictatorships tends to be about plus/minus a half a million anonymous deaths (and I'm being generous here).

There is nothing moral about any American foreign action since 1945 at least. Both political parties are guilty and the American public has watched us kill foreigners wholesale for generations without complaint.

If the Iraq War has any positive outcome, it will be this: the Vietnam myth can now be put to rest. Here we have a war with complete congressional compliance and complete media compliance. And yet the US still cannot "win." That's because, as in Vietnam, the US did not understand whom or why they were fighting.

Meanwhile, the reason many more Vietnamese did not die from the bombing of N. Vietnam is that they had an elaborate system of warning sirens and underground bunkers. In fact, the bombings took place at the same time everyday at some points. I read somewhere that some men died not from direct hits but from feeling the pressure from the bombs in their testicles.

A great work of fiction from the Vietnamese perspective is "Behind the Red Mist," a collection of stories by Ho Anh Thai.

I say: if they want to bring up the Vietnam War, by all means, let's revisit it. Tragically, students barely study it in high school or college these days.

The Delta region of Vietnam is the richest farmland in Southeast Asia. The last 1000 year history of Vietnam is replete with attempts to conquer and hold that Delta. Every time China changed emperors they tried to hold Vietnam. Sometime managing for many years but always retreating after being drawn into the jungles that must be traveled to get to the Delta and picked off until it became too expensive for the rice gained. Ho Chi Minh was our ally in WWII. He was a nationalist leader and only turned the communists and especially the Chinese communists when they were the only source of support. The Chinese, as noted above, are the traditional enemies of the Vietnamese.

I was a grunt in the 1st Air Cav, wounded and turned into a Combat Correspondent for the 1st Air Cav 69-70. When I returned to college in 1983 I studied the history and writings of Vietnam and the Vietnam War.

Senator McCain rationalizes his experiences like many who wanted and still want to believe their service was noble. That he dropped 22 loads of bombs on North Vietnam before he crashed on his 23rd mission may have a bit to do with how he was treated as he likely killed hundreds or men, women and children.

We should be so fortunate in Iraq as to have a population as willing to forgive as the Vietnamese have been. But this is not like Vietnam--it is far worse.
