There must be a cost
I agree with Magritte's Pipe on this. The issue has been discussed in comments several times. It is quite simple. Attacks on the constitution, attacks on the rule of law must be countered. When those attacks come from legislators, they should be countered by the most effective means possible, regardless of whether they come from GOP or the lesser-evil of our two parties. The Lesser-Evil party doesn't get a free ride on this.
One other thought--regardless of whether such ads get traction or not--the fact that ads are being run in the home district will absolutely get the attention of the legislator. Once run, perhaps even once purchased, the legislator will quickly learn who is running them, and why. The message will be very clearly received and understood, regardless of any impact the ads actually have.
Regarding fundraising, it would be helpful to know what the cost of the effort is. We've already raised a certain amount. What is the cost of the ad buy? It might be helpful to put some light on the goal here.

I'd like to break away from
Complaining about the MSM just long enough to note that Michael Isikoff's name seems to always end up on the most important stories.
There indeed are some good reporters out there.

The hammer is "www.goooh.com", they seem to have the answer to this problem of ZERO government representation of the people.
Please look over their site and tell others about it.

Looked at the site briefly. Will check it out more thoroughly later. Thanks for the heads-up.

I realize that this is small potatoes in the totality of life but...
We locally are fighting Dow Chemical and the Bushist EPA and our own Hillary Clinton (Moderate Democrat Jennifer Granholm) in their efforts to keep us living in the toxic pollution of from Dow Chemical's headquarters in Midland Michigan.
How bad has it gotten?
The Lt. Governor just told the Department of Environmental Quality to butt out on requiring permits and the Bushist EPA just pushed out the Great Lakes administrator of the EPA for daring to test for more contamination!
This issue has gotten practically NO local airplay and what we have gotten solidly backs the polluters, politicians and blames the Michigan DEQ for 'ruining the local economy'.
We need more exposure! We are living in a cesspool of moderate democrat and hard right fascistic republicanism and the resulting toxic pollution... My neighborhood was dubbed 'worse than Love Canal' for the levels of dioxin being found and a major Superfund site and yet the politicians still dance to the tune Dow is paying for...
Two websites to check out the action: dredgeitright.org (click 'Updates' and read the updates) and www.trwnews.net which has covered this from the beginning.
In a time where 'Support the troops' is about supporting war profiteers, 'Support the environment' is about letting corporations dump whatever they want to increase their profits.
It ought to be disgusting but these politicians have no shame...
Thank you.

Interesting...
A month ago, we received word from him that he wanted to talk to us and convince us not to do the ad campaign. He had others try to talk to us as well. We told him we'd be happy to talk to him, but the only way to stop the ad campaign would be to announce his opposition to telecom amnesty and the Rockefeller bill.
This is the first I've heard about his camp actually responding (and I don't miss a post!). Did they present any compromise or offer details as what they would discuss in order to avoid it?
And while it is still as important as ever to follow through with the campaign, I can't help but to think the "delay" (whether cynically manufactured or not), works in his favor now that his seat is safe until '10.

His seat isn't safe. He has a tough re-election fight this year.

What Democrats like Hoyer and Carney count on is that you will never challenge them or fight against them because you'll be afraid that, by doing so, you'll weaken them and help flip the district to the Republicans. They need to know that this fear won't protect them or else they have no reason to do anything but take you for granted and ignore you.
I quite agree.
Given a choice between Republican 1 and a Republican 2 posing as a Democrat it is in fact better to vote for Republican 1. It seems unlikely that Democrats will be motivated to act in the interests of the people, rather than the corporations, unless it is significantly challenged to do so. This approach reduces the confusion.
Ultimately the country is a lost cause unless corporate control of the government can be reduced. At this point that control appears to be nearly complete and probably permanent.

Glenn writes of Carney, "A month ago, we received word from him that he wanted to talk to us and convince us not to do the ad campaign."
This is fabulous and thank you so very much for continuing to write about FISA.
Ever think about a campaign against these Blue Dogs for supporting the upcoming $108 Billion more for the Iraq war? Several MSM outlets are reporting it will pass. But maybe that's simply the MSM's spin.

Maybe not YOU specifically, Bamage
But certainly you and me and a few others who keep it to ourselves will never spread any new ideas or enthusiasms to the sheepulace.
It certainly seems that way today considering there is no motivation visible.

An interesting locution
Carney: Carney said that a compromise should protect national security
Why does "national security" need to be "protected," rather than enhanced or promoted? Is it now a tangible thing, like "terror," that can absorb endless sums of cash without any direct effect on it?
Is it, maybe, an institution that needs protection from those who would investigate it?
Or an industry?
