Why the Jeremiah Wright story deserves more attention

Some problem-plagued nations could ill afford to devote so much time and energy to a matter of this sort. Thankfully, the U.S. isn't one of them.

The letters thread is now closed.

If This Is A Non-Story, Then Why Have You Wasted Your Time Posting This Piece?

And, better yet, why did Obama take precious time today to have yet another Press Conference to denounce *cough* Reverend *cough* Wright?

Because it is one of those onions you need to peel back to see what is really going on.

A man brings his little girls to a hate-mongering church each week, then tries to run for President. (poor children absorbing such hate for so many years with such tender ears)

A man supports, befriends, and invites this hate-mongering, crazy monster who denounces the Jews, other religions, white people (or any other race other than black) to his home, to marry him, and to baptize his children (the, now, brainwashed ones).

A man who supports one of the most Anti-American lunatics (not to mention Ayers and company), is trying to run for the very country this lunatic lambasts.

Not a story? What?

hot damn

that was good. I too skimmed this morning's Wright-fest on the front page to see if Glenn had written something- thought he might have something insightful to say. Indeed he did, it just came a few hours later.

Serious Issues

I've become convinced that we, as a society, don't have the appropriate mechanisms in place to truly deal with serious issues. Look at how the war propaganda story turned out. One article in the NYT and very little coverage elsewhere. If television news outlets don't want to cover it, they've proven that they simply don't have to. It's a systemic problem.

And why should they when they can just fill the airwaves with someone who they can easily cast as an angry black man? Just think of it as a colonial circus where visitors pay to gape at the strange dark person in captivity. We're just lucky they let Reverend Wright wear clothes. If they actually addressed some of the issues he raises in a meaningful fashion, that'd be one thing. But instead it's just a sideshow.

That Sickening Feeling in the Pit of My Stomach

Has returned. The last time I felt it, I was sitting on my couch at 3 a.m., watching the election returns in 2004. I did not go to work that day. I spent it instead thinking how I could possibly be so out of touch with the rest of America, and how could an intelligent people of such a great nation re-elect such a destructive fool. As the media narratives play out, the fact that we're STILL talking about Reverend Wright makes me fear that the headway it appears we made over the last few years is entirely illusory. The real issues are again being marginalized - the election is taking on the appearance of a popularity contest again, to the detriment of all involved.

I don't think I could take another night like that night in 2004, and it seems a little more possible today than it did a few days ago. Sigh.

@ quickstrategy

Whew! Thanks.

With that cleared up, may I just say? PREACH it Brother Wright! NEVER back down, never back down, never back down....

That goes for you too Glenn. We're all right here with you.

Joan's admiration for Obama: Put that nappy headed negro Rev.Wright in his place

apparently acccording to the gospel of Joan Walsh it is not admirable to discuss foreign policy failures, attacks on Black religious beliefs, the dead in Iraq, blowback...

Joan and Salon only admires Obama when he castrates his Black pastor and makes excuses for the Sean Bell verdict..

Tuesday, April 29, 2008 01:29 PM

True

So far today, you're the only person who has reported on this story for what it really is: a non-story. We see them all the time (Joan Walsh, with her serious, furrowed brow, often opines about these sorts of non-stories).

The only reason I can figure for this nonsense is that pretty much every major news outlet is owned by a larger corporation. The news then becomes a product, a widget to be sold on the market. In that sense, the "Angry Black Preacher said Mean Things About America!" story sells much better than a breakdown of farm subsidies or medicare reform.

We are becoming a nation of fucking idiots.

@sunny miller

It hasn't happened, don't worry.

There are some on here who are convinced that Joan Walsh, Alex Koppleman and others are part of some vast conspiracy to bring down Obama and that they will now unsheath their knives and do away with Glenn. That's all.

I got scared...

until I read AncientAssyrian's comment.

Thanks Glenn, sorry to be so dense.

Wait, What?!?!

Please be sure to let us know where you end up working - I look forward to reading your columns in the future, where ever it is you land.

Hello, when did this happen?

Tuesday, April 29, 2008 01:23 PM

It Moves Us All.

Out of the Black Churches of America came Gospel music. As far as I'm concerned, for that one thing alone (among others) I will treasure that institution my whole life, and America should also. We owe them a debt for that music which can never be repaid. If it was calculated on a basis of theft of intellectual product alone, in that almost all of American popular music is based on Gospel music (if it doesn't quite obviously and shamelessly rip it off directly), the recompense would be, well, incalcuable.

Tuesday, April 29, 2008 01:23 PM

Short, succinct

And on point. Thanks Glenn. I've been waiting for someone people actually read to say something like this. The only thing you missed is WHY this is so important we have to keep talking about it...not that I think you should spend any more time on this. Like you said, we're way past enough.

A challenge to Glenn

If Greenwald wants to discuss policy, then he should call up the Obama campaign and ask them about the false choice Obama constantly offers; see my name's link for the details.

If he doesn't want to ask Obama a question (for some unknown reason), here's one for Hillary:

youtube.com/watch?v=Q_l4Lawj14A

OK, so he probably won't ask either of those. So, here's one for McCain:

youtube.com/watch?v=YRWRzZ_yPnk

The last involves a link to someone, but at least the supposed differences he has with McCain involve policy.

So, there you have it: let's see if Greenwald really wants to discuss important issues, or whether he just wants to whine.
