A nice pat on the back
Dissent Magazine
The 'New' New Left
By Brian MortonI'm talking about a new breed of liberal writers who have emerged on the web—a network of writers who are bringing together reformism and idealism in a way we haven't seen in many years. I'm thinking of people like Joshua Micah Marshall (the man behind Talking Points Memo); Eric Alterman, the Nation columnist, author of many books, and blogger for Media Matters for America; Ezra Klein (The American Prospect); Kevin Drum (the Washington Monthly); Glenn Greenwald (Salon); Matthew Yglesias (the Atlantic); Bob Somerby (the Daily Howler); Rick Perlstein (the Campaign for America's Future); and the writer who goes by the name of Digby who blogs for her own website, digbysblog. I think of Paul Krugman and Harold Meyerson as two of the spiritual godfathers of this kind of politics. Meyerson has edited some of these writers at the American Prospect; and Krugman makes frequent reference to their work in his columns and on his New York Times blog.
These writers are exciting because they're unapologetically, un-defensively liberal, and because their liberalism isn't the cautious, hesitant, scared-of-its-own-shadow, skim-milk liberalism that we've all gotten used to. It's a militant liberalism, of a kind we haven't seen in decades.

Although, anymore, it's hard to think in terms of left and right. There's simply sane and insane, I think. IMHO, you keep good company, Glenn.

Ex Parte, Party Hearty!
The Morning Show did a chat on post-divorce anxiety.
I've got a real bad case of that, for sure. Hell of it is, I'm still married!

Petraeus Promoted to CENTCOM Commander
The Associated Press reports that Gen. David Petraeus has been tapped to become the next commander of U.S. Central Command. If confirmed by the Senate, he will replace Navy Adm. William Fallon, who stepped down in March.

critical of president bush ... ??
well maybe y'all don't know that all retired members of the military who are eligible to draw pay as specified under Article 2.4 of the UCMJ are expessly forbidden from criticizing governmental officials .. under
888. ART. 88. CONTEMPT TOWARD OFFICIALS
Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.
just thought i'd throw that in here ...

I want to join your cabal!
The one you, bucky, omooex and holly have. What is the secret one handed handshake?

What is the sound of one hand shaking?

Jkat
"Contemptous words" != "critical words"
Would this also apply to retired military who criticize Democrats and or their policies?
-
So, Jkat...
Where in that standard does it prohibit retired military from criticizing the policies and procedure of the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation...
I tend to separate the person from their policies. Intoning against the war/military occupation in Iraq does not mean one has called the president a dick-head. I'd even go so far as to speculate a retired military could be contemptuous of a policy promoted by the above. But, I could be wrong, and surely you'll offer the precise statute which prohibits it. Or, someone else can/will produce it.

Don't hold your breath.
But wait!!
Maybe we can petition that a Courts Martial be convened for John McCain (Capt.USN-Retired) for his criticism and disresectful comments directed at former CinCs Bill Clinton, or his criticism of the strategy of George H.W. Bush, and even, if we're blessed, current CinC George W. Bush.
That would be interesting.
Let's hope that this guy comes up with the details.

@ Mona
@Arne et al. re:polygamous "cult" persecution
Just because the rebarbative shooter makes that claim, don't make it untrue. Click my name.
Broken clock, and etc.
Mona: I don't have anything against polygamy (or polyandry) myself. People can do what they want as long as they're not hurting others, IMNSHO. I thought the feds' insistence that Utah ban polygamy as the price of admission to the union was one of the worst acts of impermissible religious intolerance in U.S. legal history.
I do draw the line at forced 'marriages' of children (although that seems to have been fine at one time with the Good Folks Of The Book, and I'm not talking Book of Mormon here....).
I was primarily chiding Sh*8ter for his attempted distraction, and "polygamy" seems to bother him ... when it's Moooslims that are doing it, that is.
Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of Muslim views on women (but then again I can say the same about Catholics too).
Cheers,

Retired Commissioned Officers
Have technically and legally resigned their commissions. They are no longer "commissioned". Why are we having this conversation?

Trumbull's General George Washington Resigning His Commission
John Trumbull
Oil on canvas, 12' x 18'
Commissioned 1817; purchased 1824
Rotunda
General George Washington resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Army to the Congress, which was then meeting at the Maryland State House in Annapolis, on December 23, 1783. This action was of great significance in establishing of civilian rather than military rule, leading to democracy rather than dictatorship. Washington stands with two aides-de-camp addressing the president of the Congress, Thomas Mifflin, and others, such as Elbridge Gerry, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and James Madison. Mrs. Washington and her three grandchildren are shown watching from the gallery, although they were not in fact present at the event.

Just remove the sock from your fist, and take the foot out of your mouth, and everything'll be fine.
