Worse off than Yoo
Here is a link for your story Mona...

Funnier still, Krugman has on the top of his blog a post entitled "The end of welfare as we know it?". I can't imagine that one of the wingnut welfare groups hasn't scooped AG up.

Maybe the times are a changing.

@ Annie W: Re 18 Warm Blood Cross
Refers to the horse's height at the wither (near the base of the neck where it takes off from the shoulder). 18 hh = hands high, and that's a TALL horse. Warm blood cross refers to a cross breed of the German style large war horse, now bred to the more refined sport horse type and suitable for jumping, hunt seat and dressage (very much favored in dressage).
A horse is anything over 14 hands high. Thoroughbreds are often in the 16-17hh range, and western style riding breeds, such as the paints, appaloosas and quarter horses often are in the 15-16hh range, where they are a bit lower to the ground and are more nimble working cattle. (Very abbreviated and short cut general version)
The Tenn Walkers and American Saddlebreds are in the 15.2 - 16.2 range, as I recall, but I don't have much experience with them and may well be off in my recollection.

Ahhh
What an absolutely perfect place to mention ponies.

Quickly From a Fool
I can not understand the pansy attitude that to watch and chronicle is enough!
You misunderstand what I mean by "watchers?" Probably my fault; I wrote hurriedly, under some pressure, as I admitted at the time. Think "watching the watchers." Thus, I refer not to spectators and stenographic reporters, but to the guardians. I refer to the courageous JAGs who have blown the whistle at Guantanamo, EFF, ACLU, AI, and Glenn, and Jane, and selise, and pow wow, and Marcy, people like that....
Ché Pasa conceded that what he was prescribing is a form of theater. I have no problem with that (now that I understand that that is what he means), but it is only one other way to push back. No way could it supplant the actions like those of the patriots I listed above; it could only be an adjunct.
Even if we only got impeachment and not conviction in the Senate, that would still be a fine message to send to future presidents.
Never said otherwise. Never implied otherwise.
Finally, do you really think it was wine and roses in this country during the Clinton administration?
Never said that. Never implied it.

Memo to Petraeus & Crocker: More Laughs, Please

memo-to-petraeus-crocker-more-laughs-please
/?ex=1208664000&en=3c453633cbe8333a&ei=5070&emc=eta1"... I can’t look at Petraeus — his uniform ornamented like a Christmas tree with honors, medals and ribbons — without thinking of the great Mort Sahl at the peak of his brilliance. He talked about meeting General Westmoreland in the Vietnam days. Mort, in a virtuoso display of his uncanny detailed knowledge — and memory — of such things, recited the lengthy list (”Distinguished Service Medal, Croix de Guerre with Chevron, Bronze Star, Pacific Campaign” and on and on), naming each of the half-acre of decorations, medals, ornaments, campaign ribbons and other fripperies festooning the general’s sternum in gaudy display. Finishing the detailed list, Mort observed, “Very impressive!” Adding, “If you’re twelve.” ..."
Well worth a read.

B1: "I can not understand the pansy attitude that to watch and chronicle is enough!"
Gordon: You misunderstand what I mean by "watchers?"
My apologies. I have read so many lately that want to just forget and move on to the election that I took that as your meaning.

@Nequals1
Thanks, I got the 18 part, figured it meant 18 hands, I just didn't get "terminal crash" and what "warm blood cross" meant. Interesting stuff and thanks for the info.
I imagine horsehunter has/had a pretty bad ass horse and I say that in a complimentary way. I saw a Belgium war horse and rider perform once as a teen at a fair and was absolutely awestruck.
Nequals1, your previous story cracked me up, especially about the possums. You and your whacky liberal chicken, horse and bunny loving theories....
Now, back to why torture and the people that sponsor it totally suck and should be shunned in any decent society...

Done.
William. pow wow. (*with one more, we could have a hoe-down)
Excellent letter too. I have long thought the Congress creatures were the very ones to address, maybe the only ones to address, about this unmitigated assult on our constitution. Perhaps, such inspired letters of grievences will help to inform and instruct those in Congress who hold the 'reins of power'.
giddy up.
whoa nellie,

One more menagerie story
My rescue hound dogs (one catahoula and one walker) usually content themselves with catching the occasional squirrel, but now and then decide to harass one of the local gopher tortoises. One day last fall, I went out to check into the barking ruckus that indicated they were after a tortoise, only to find my wife's quarterhorse standing guard over the tortoise with one front hoof on either side. Quite a sight to behold. And you are right, N=1, rescue animals really do seem to show an extra level of gratitude and friendship.

Thanks, pow wow
Done.

@AnnieW re: Gonzo's Unemployment
Thanks, yes, your first link is the story I was alluding to. The Krugman editorial is also amusing. As he says, it is extremely odd for former AGs (or their higher subordinates) to have the slightest difficulty finding work.
Of gourse, Gonzo is manifestly not a good lawyer or able to defend himself or his clients well. That became entirely evident during his various testimonies before congressional committees and his public statements. And, he may yet be indicted for any number of matters, including perjury, lying to Congress or witness tampering with that Goodling woman. (He doesn't have a legal defense fund for nothing.) Not exactly the sh*tload of baggage a law firm looks for in a new partner.

Foolishness
Maybe I am a fool.-- Gordon
Progress is being made? Really? The way I see it, believing in and relying on what you and your friends here see as progress actually damages our position further. How long it will take for "slow" or "small" or "incremental" progress to overtake the pervasive evils? Will it ever? Perhaps the better question is - How long are you willing to play their game?
What you are so happy with and what you would ask us to applaud is a 2% raise during 10% inflation. "Hey look at that we got a raise when it didn't look as though we would receive one at all! That's something, right? And, if we work hard enough within the system and elect a Democrat, we will get a 3% raise!"
If inflation continues to rise what does that 3% amount to? Unfortunately, the powers that be have gamed the system and will not allow our raise to exceed their rate of inflation. Not by normal means anyway. I think there have been times in our history when we have gotten fairly close but, relatively speaking, those times were not "normal" and were not defined by slow, small or incremental progress.
