Letters to the Editor

What to do?
So if coverage of his speech in SF shows up in Time, how about if everyone sends the "editor" a letter, unless this coverage properly points out the lies? (Mar 19th is the latest search result for Mukasey at time.com now)

Re: Why they didn't get a FISA warrant
They were too lazy.
The more we learn about the administration's abuses of power, the more it seems that their core motivation is that they simply don't want to be bothered with having to follow the law.

Following the law would have required filling out paperwork. Imagine the hardship!

Typo?
To the contrary, the substantial majority of New Yorkers -- and huge majorities of Manhattanites -- vehemently reject the Bush/Cheney agenda of dismantling our constitutional framework and basic safeguards in the name of these sorts of fear-mongering and manipulative appeals.--GlennGreenwald
Correction: Bush/Cheney/Rockefeller agenda.

She voted for him, and he screwed her blue.
Fuck you, Dianne Feinstein, for foisting upon us the bloated jackass known as Michael Mukasey, arguably only fractionally better than his predecessor Fredo Gonzales.
Muckasey's main job NOW is protecting Republicans under investigation by his Department of Justice. And we have Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Schumer to thank. Or, rather, Jerry Lewis (R-CA) can thank them.
Rumor is she will retire and not run again.
GOOD!

Cry Me a River
What is it about Republicans and their crocodile tears? Supposedly such big. tough he-men, they resort to the tactic of frustrated toddlers when the facts are against them.
Who can forget Randy "Duke" Cunningham turning on the waterworks when it looked like his fancy antiques and fetid hot tub were going to be snatched?
Then there was John Boehner, with streaks in his peanut-butter fake tan, blubbering drunkenly so frequently that all Washington probably flees when he walks in to a bar.
Indeed, it seems that Dick Cheney is about the only prominent Republican incapable, or more likely just uninterested, of dissolving into tears on cue. You've got to, in a weird way, give him some credit.....
He's going to the bank, alright, but snickering, rather than crying, all the way.

Moral implications
Spot-on, Glenn, but I would have liked for you to discuss more about the moral implications of Mukasey's lies. It's truly disgusting to hear about Mukasey "crying" about the 9/11 victims to sell his lies about wiretapping. Simply disgusting. Of course, nobody cares because he's displaying "patriotism". In fact he's doing the opposite. Using such an emotional event to manipulate people who are not as informed as Glenn is about FISA and federal courts into supporting him is unspeakably immoral. He's essentially taking advantage of the victims' fates to push for telecom amnesty and protect the telecoms' corporate interests. Those poor souls must be rolling in their graves.

You really have to wonder
Mike Mukasey was a long-time federal judge and so I feel perfectly comfortable calling that what it is: a brazen lie. -GlennGreenwald
What is it, which presumably would be revealed by allowing the telecom suits to proceed, that the Bush administration would (literally) pull out all of the stops to suppress? Why would Mukasey humiliate himself like this? It really makes me curiouser and curiouser. The more they resist, the more alarmed I become, and the more I want to know what it is.
I just finished reading Horton's Vote Machine which is a substantive discussion of the GOP's perversion of the DOJ. Is the assault on FISA just more of the same, or is this a different kettle of fish altogether?

I've worked for two federal judges
and have practiced before Judge Mukasey.
I have no difficulty saying that Mukasey's lies here are the most revolting things I've ever heardc out of a fedar judge -- except perhaps Ken Starr. There is no question that Mukasey knows, or should know, the absolute falsity of what he is saying.
He is unfit to hold any office, let alone a cabinet office or Article III office of the United States.

Believe our lying eyes
Glenn: Is your creative team using the work of George Lakoff in crafting the message(s)?
My suggestion would be to use a voiceover of a pertinent lie with superimposed video showing it to be a blatant lie.
For example, a statement of no new taxes with ideo of a family being evicted; the surge is working tripe with graphic video of Baghdad violence and refusee/Iraqi civilian casualty statistics; low unemployment assertion with video of working parent at a food bank
People act in their immediate self interests. Show the disparity of what is being said to them and what is actually their experience relative to food, shelter, clothing, safe transportation and work.
The audience will get the message: believe the lying liar or believe their empty stomachs, their cold homes, their wait at the empty food bank and the time at the unemployment lines.

DNI Mike Mcconnel is a big liar too
Mcconnel spoke at Furman University in Greenville SC yesterday and tried to pass on the same BS. Here's the link:

Just goes to show...
We really DO need to come together and call for a truly independent and thorough investigation into 9/11. The official story we've been fed just doesn't add up, and it would be so helpful to the cause if some of the more prominent bloggers would join in and openly call for one. I know quite a few regular readers, here, agreed with me before on this, and we were faced with opposition from others in comments who behaved as though demanding a new investigation was somehow offensive to them.
It's offensive to me that so many people seem to believe that anyone who doesn't believe the official story is some sort of loon buying into wild conspiracy theories, so I'll try and nip that in the bud right out of the gate, here: Just because I believe there is ample evidence that contradicts the official story we've been told does NOT mean I believe every single wild conspiracy theory that comes down the pike. I don't claim to know what happened that day, I only know that what we've been told is NOT how events unfolded.
Glenn, don't just wonder why the administration didn't, as Mukasey suggests, obtain a warrant to listen in on 9/11-planning calls that supposedly originated from a safe house in Afghanistan. DEMAND TO KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED. Take that leap, join us in demanding answers. WE DESERVE TO KNOW HOW AND WHY 9/11 HAPPENED.
