Forced or not, W.E.S., the speech set an important tone.
Obama's Race Speech...Wasn't brilliant. It was forced. And he needs to get off that stuff forced or not. -- The Notorious W.E.S.
Also, "that stuff" is going to be a part of this contest whether we like it or not. At this point its all the GOP can play with.
Obama has set the tone of such discussion and debate, however. The trick will be to keep that tone and keep it from becoming the centerpiece of the election.

Rough Men
They think that Orwell is John Wayne because they attribute that quote to Orwell. The one Jack Nicholson made famous in A Few Good Men, rough men on walls, etc... But Orwell never said that.
Can they handle the truth?
Did George Orwell ever say: "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf?" Or: "We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us?"
Not exactly. But he did make comments that were along similar lines. In his essay on Rudyard Kipling (1942), Orwell wrote: "[Kipling] sees clearly that men can only be highly civilized while other men, inevitably less civilised, are there to guard and feed them." (Thanks to Keith Ammann for this). And in his 'Notes on Nationalism' (1945) he wrote: "Those who "abjure" violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf." (Thanks to Parbety). Where the rough men crept in is anyone's guess.

There are those inside the inner beltway still chatting away.... talking to 'um elf-self. It's amazing, ain't it something?
To have such audacity, to doubt their insanity, and to know deep down they know each conversation validates Each-others sheer insanity. The pugnacious war mongers embrace and praise! gads.
Oh, hug a P.R. preacher lover mutt pug? Eat cooked asparagus and creamed hollandaise?
Suet Sauce.
It's important.
Don't enjoy little green football stew with mothballs. The writers of certain blogs are darn contemptible.
Maybe Glenn should write about non-human toadish topics? A toad-in-the-hole is a meat meal dish.
It's a yucky dish platter of greasy sausage in dough batter. A Toad Topic sounds interesting?
Maybe a blog here can have a chainsaw UT noise in a background to promote sounder sane thinking?
TOADS are those who have skin that exudes a poison. A human toad can be stout and warty.
`
A non-human fungus TOADSTOOL? Write about those spore-bearing Fungus among a USA?
There are things in the natural world that are deadly poisonous, inedible, and so toxic indigestible.
`
Glenn. Write your fancy. Instapunk is P.R. for crud. A.C. + P.R. etc., are ill-sounding repercussions.
Death eulogy.
Write about TOADFISH? They are Loud-Wide-Mouths, and feed at the bottom of the muck. Toadfish come in human form, and make loud grunts from the bottom mud Noise machine.
Right-Wing neocons endorse and embrace killing to make a day's wage. It's blood money.

The Anti-Limbaugh, Mike Malloy!
There is an antidote for Rush Limbaugh! Tell your friends. Call your mother! His name is Mike Malloy, and you can hear him at the Nova M network.
http://www.novamradio.com/
Mike is absolutely fearless, is highly intelligent and has excellent analytical skills. He also has a mouth. And I mean that in a good way. Mike hates Rush, calls him "the pig man" and often says that when the "lights go out, I just want 5 minutes alone with him." His tag line is, "Have I mentioned tonight, just how much I hate these people?" His phrase for the attack dogs of the Republican slime machine is the "flying monkey right", a wonderful and apt metaphor for those people.
Unlike the hateful swine that populate the right wing blogosphere and noise machine, Mike approaches the issues from a Liberal viewpoint and with compassion. Mike was named one of the 20 most dangerous Liberals in America by FOX 'News'. Good for him!
I believe that Mike once interviewed Glenn, although I missed that show. Mike is on Monday to Friday at 9PM EST, replayed on Sunday also at 9.

@Iokannan in the Well
"Comments?"
By Hannity's "friend" I assume you mean Hal Turner.
If this report is true, Hal Turner is "good friends" with the FBI and you and I pay for it.
But this country isn't flirting dangerously close to fascism yet, is it?

@ blank
It would be nice if our candidates would save some of that ammo for the Republicans. They have lots of it, but they're wasting it on themselves. Worse yet, all John McCain has to do is sit back and watch the show with the rest of us. A few months ago, either Dem candidate could have mopped the floor with Johnnie Mack. Now he's either even or ahead half a dozen points, depending on which poll you're looking at. It's a miracle worthy of Mike Huckabee that McCain's been able to accomplish this without spending much of his own money.
As for smear campaigns, you can't just "rise above them" or simply ignore them. If you have a nail popping up through the floor of your house, do you leave it, or do you hammer it back down (or pull it out by the head)? It's the same thing with "swift boat" attacks. At the very least, I would have publicly challenged them to say those things to my face if I were in Sen. Kerry's position. He went on vacation. I'm sorry, but letting these flying monkeys just get away with it is unacceptable. You have to go to the mattresses every single time, or it keeps coming, not just for you, but the next Democrat who decides he or she wants to run for President. If you can't do that, you're unfit for command, as the Swift Boaters suggested all along.

I've rewritten this post about five times now trying to keep from being nasty since I don't think you deliberately goaded me.
Not everyone is financially secure, there are a lot of people out here weathering a monetary perfect storm. I know this all too well since we are in the little fishing boat about to capsize ourselves.
Salon and Glenn's blog are waypoints for me while navigating back and forth from craigslist to ebay. I spend all day and half the night most days trying to find an angle to make a buck.
