Letters to the Editor

Maybe our poor, innocent, objective, serious reporters don't want to anger the beast and watch their careers go in the tank, along with McCain's expertise? i.e. McCain's Temper
To challenge McCain is to potentially face his "vicious temper". Would you want to be the intrepid reporter that really goes after McCain and asks real questions, only to end up getting an earful of McCain's "famously" bad temper?
How would the media report that? Would it be reported as "fearless journalist stands up to McCain and questions his lies"? Or will it be reported as "Lovable War Hero, Everybody's Friend, Always Serious and Knowledgeable, Manly Man, and all around Perfect, smart, and uber-tactical Super-American John McCain puts a Disrespectful anti-American Nancy Boy Pacifist Effeminate Liberal Reporter in its place"?
What would the important establishment politicians and media peeps (that said intrepid reporter mingles with and sucks up to at happy hour) think if he or she was to be forever known thereafter as "the unserious reporter that McCain went off on"? How would that "embarrassment" affect your career? (i.e. would your career be over as you are forever remembered as "the reporter who pissed off Lovable War Hero and Everybody's Friend John McCain"?)
