Do people think that an Angry Black President would ghettoize all the white males?
Juliebird, how can you ask that question as a veteran of the wars at Broadsheet where there are men who already think they are ghetto-ized by the women's movement? Of course there are people who think that.
The more relevant question is do people think that everyone who does not support Obama is a racist?
Do people think that everyone who supports Senator Clinton is a racist?
Do people think that people who think Jeremiah Wright's statements to border on racism are also racists?
Do people think that people who think that Obama should have distanced himself from Trinity much sooner are racists?
Do people think that just because I think Obama is a phony and and has a serious truthiness problem that I am a racist?
Does Retired Military Patriot think T. Suarez is a racist just because they have a disagreement about Obama.
Is everyone who does not support Obama eventually going to get tarred as a racist.
Manos99 has already made a stenuous effort to paint me (in another thread) as a racist.
Are Obama supporters going to go on like this into the general election alienating everyone who disagrees with them instead of trying to win hearts and minds?
To me, a really relevant question is can Obama win the general election running as an angry black male -- or at the very least suffering from supports who will defend him on the grounds of "it's perfectly understandable for black people to be angry" -- thus reinforcing that not only that he is the "black candidate" but an angry black male?
I think McCain will win it. I see the seeds of his win here at Salon.
Just don't slip over the edge and become a "prole", like me. It's hell down here. If I was younger, I'd join the Army, but I'm just an old prole. Compared to me, you're on top of the world!
Just how much time have you spent living in inner cities? I can tell you that, at least in New Orleans, residents (and visitors) have everything to fear from baggy-pants-wearing kids.
Kate Tex
Kate, you are so right! who the hell worries about kid's pants when there are pulpits with figurative machine guns blazing away. Wow! Sunday's must be really something, with the bells and the choirs and the rapid-fire pulpits! No place for a prole like me!
Did I read this incorrectly? What does this mean for the "fringe" label being applied to Trinity church? Has Oprah also been "poisoned" by her association with Trinity? Is Reverend Wright responsible for her book club selections? Her Afrocentric thinking embodied by her enthusiastic love of those like Dr. Phil or James Frey (before he was caught lying to her)?
Oprah is as mainstream as anyone in America--black or white--can be, politically speaking at least. She has been a fixture, a known quantity for years.
And not one of the candidates running is baggage free.
Exhibit A: McCain who has, other than Hagee, the albatross of Bush and the Iraq war hanging around his neck, along with his own quick and funny but sometimes damaging remarks like the desire to stay in Iraq for a 100 years or his out-of-touch remarks confusing Sunni and Shia factions.
Exhibit B: Hillary Clinton who is very popular with her base, and fairly popular with the general Democratic-leaning population, but clearly carries with her the baggage of her husband and the mistakes of his administrations...also his presence which has at least on the campaign trail, been less of an asset to her than many of us would have imagined a few months ago, and the baggage of her Iraq war vote, which as Frank Rich pointed out in the New York Times is only worse because of her inability to fully own up to it as many of her constituents wish she had a long time ago (and some blame this on her other albatross the increasingly hated and hateful Sean Penn)....
And exhibit C. By comparison, the comments of Reverend Wright, especially since they do not seem to represent Obama's personal views, don't seem to be as big of an albatross as either of the other two candidates carry. Rev. Wright is retiring this year--and apparently Oprah goes to his church as well as thousands of others. Is any candidate running in the 24 hour news cycle of 2008 going to be baggage free? Is anyone able to be held up to the scrutiny and come away pure?
And the comments of Instapundit, for the record, make me want to throw up, they make me so angry. I might not agree with Rev. Wright's statements but I fiercely defend his right to free speech. And it makes me angry that black churches would be held to a higher degree of criticism or scrutiny in our country where many white preachers have made incidiary comments with no political criticism. Also, what about the thousands who attend churches where "spiritual leaders" turn out to be molestors or worse? Religion is a very human endeavor. Even "spiritual leaders" have human imperfections....all that I know of, with the possible exception of the Dalai Lama, who I admit to thinking might be as nearly perfect as humans come.
Debig? The doctors and lawyers need to plant parsnips?
Good Celery
Ahhh! Parsnips! Easier to grow than carrots and how good they are! We mostly sort of crisp 'em, with butter. I would advise parsnips for anybody!
Just how much time have you spent living in inner cities? I can tell you that, at least in New Orleans, residents (and visitors) have everything to fear from baggy-pants-wearing kids. Those fears include losing your life to one of them.
The complaint wasn't about violence, it was about clothing style. OldPunk didn't say anything about violence and didn't indicate that he was aware of any connection at all.
You are merely reinforcing my point. The complaints didn't even have a facade of legitimacy. Most rants touch on deadbeat dads, violence, drug dealing, etc. This rant was about clothing and playing basketball.
Baggy clothing is a fashion now. Go to a place like upstate NY where you don't have to fear for your life and you'll still see plenty of young men both black and white wearing baggy clothing and pants below their asses.
If you want to write about how black people are terrible niggers because they are violent savages then write that. That's not what OldPunk wrote. He wrote that they are terrible niggers because they play basketball a lot and wear baggy clothes and play loud music. (Kids today!)
Which black people do you think are niggers? C'mon, share your list. Maybe you could do it old school and list Hendrix? How about Kriss Kross? They wore their clothes backwards for Christ's sake. Niggers the both of them, no doubt.
