Obama's faith in the reasoning abilities of the American public

His speech underscored both the promise and the risk of his campaign strategy.

The letters thread is now closed.

Oh no!

A political calculation.

From a politician?

Running for president?

The sky is falling!

Walter, you're sounding a little mealy-mouthed. You pretend to want Obama to have a chance, but you don't want him to defend himself.

Interview with ABC

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Nightline/Vote2008/story?id=4480133&page=1

Anybody reading this comment thread should read this interview.

Among other things Obama implies that he's had this speech in the can for awhile at it was only a matter of time before the need to present it arose.

Link on my sig as well.

@lastname

Thank you. I needed an excuse to fall off my office chair.

I'm glad that my inadvertent use of the Middle English variant of humor brought you so much joy.

You were talking about the "fluid or juice of an animal or plant"?

"Humour" (in England or Canada), "humor" or "humorous" in the modern sense was first recorded 1705.

The Whole Subject is Moot

Obama can orate like MLK, and McCain can get the Sunnis mixed up with the Zoroastrians, and it won't matter.

McCain will win in '08 because he's "tough," and because the MSM whores itself for its corporate masters. I don't care how inspirational Obama's speech was, the "secret muslim" meme will win every time. (Or if HRC gets the nomination, it will be the "secret lesbian who killed Vince Foster" meme.)

Nothing's changed. The press hasn't changed, the lobbyists haven't gone home, the voting population hasn't magically gotten smarter in four years. People vote for the candidate who wears a flag pin and talks the most like a good ole boy.

I was hopeful about this election for a total of about 10 minutes, but now it's just ####ing me off.

@ old91a10

It’s been reported and mentioned in this thread, that Obama stayed up until 2am and wrote the entire speech himself. Your error is not important, but the fact that Barack wrote the entire speech and wrote his entire convention speech without any help is very important to me.

I am heartened that we hear the inner thoughts of a man who wrestles with tough issues and then has the bravery to tell us so eloquently what he believes and how he can help all Americans better themselves. I guess in this cynical time where so much of the M$M is serving us so poorly, that it is hard for people to recognize sincerity from a presidential candidate. I don’t think we have seen that since Jimmie Carter and Bobby Kennedy.

You can see that some commenters on this thread are so caught up in campaign nonsense or personal political motives that they either refuse to recognize Obama’s sincerity or truly can’t see it. That is a sad commentary on our current political and media environment.

Touche Baldie

I agree with you. I guess that didn't come across as I intended.

I guess what I meant to say is this speech would not have been made if he didn't need to make it for damage control.

I am for any democrat. I think that either would make a great president and will work for either.

My problem is that I don't think that Obama walks on water and can do no wrong. I see him as a shrewd politician and not someone who walks on water.

Any criticism of him however mild is sure to be met with a score of angry replies from the converted and a rational discussion is almost impossible. It gets old.

@omooex- try again

You might want to consider going back to your original post and spell out what you meant when you said:

[omooex] ”Oh, so you're a white elderly retiree living in Arizona--how CONVENIENT for your point.”

As I have read your more recent replies, it almost seems like you are saying that people shouldn’t bring their own backgrounds into the discussion, but that doesn’t make any sense because you have mentioned being a Palestinian in several posts in this same thread.

Alternatively, perhaps you are saying that Mr. Timberman is lying about his age or racial background, but that doesn’t make sense because you have posted about how unfair that practice is (when others questioned what you said to be your background).

My guess is that you were making a point, but I don’t think very many people have figured out what it is (I know I haven't).

My GOD

Have you all no sense of humor? The comment was the most absurd thing I could think to write, but obviously it found its home here.

@Art Pooper

People vote for the candidate who wears a flag pin and talks the most like a good ole boy.

Really? In S.F. LA, NYC, Boston, Detroit? All the population centers and the places where the most electoral votes are?

Damn! I'm reaching for my passport right now! Cut and run, Democrats!

It's a strange world, Jkalos

1951, a Gadsden, AL, department store. Exactly the same scenario, except that it began with me drinking out of the colored fountain. Traffic stopped, until my mom swooped down and scooped me up. This was followed by a long explanation of what had happened, and a longer instruction on the evil some men do to others. I never forgot it either.

Priorities

It will be a tragedy if this election not only uncovers hidden anger but reignites anger that had started to wane. The mainstream media long ago began talking about the election as if Obama had already been chosen. As a result, if Obama doesn't prevail in the end, it will falsely be perceived as a triumph of racism, which would be a grave injustice to everyone -- such a perception would set real social progress back decades.
