Letters to the Editor

An unimportant point..
My handle does not come from the letters HRH, nor does it have anything to do with arachnids.
Partly it comes from the fact I've been riding motorcycles so long that I can often tell when other drivers are going to do something stupid before they know it themselves..
If I couldn't I probably wouldn't be alive to be boring y'all to tears..

@ SusanMc
I love Randy Newman too, because he loves LA, my favorite city on the planet. (My helmet and flak jacket are ready to hand, but I warn you, my love is steadfast.)

Science-fiction
Since we're talking Heinlein, it might be apropos for me to mention that went I went to see "Star Wars" I was certain it was based on Asimov's "Foundation and Trilogy". But it wasn't.
Where did I get that idea? Who knows.
-
"Want to make something outta it?" huh.
Maybe a moose loaf dinner with celery, peanut butter, fish cakes, and pour a gallon of hollandaise sauce?
Susan ain't gonna cook.
Maybe the hypocrites who feed at the trough can practice actin' out their dear bed roles.
I remember an experimental drug user was on his death bed. He cheered up visitors.
He said, "I wish I could have been as funny as you visitors who came to say good bye."
Then he died with a smile on his face.
Socrates was like that too. He had a cranky spouse. huh. ot? poor Glenn. Wake him up?
Toss a bowl of mousse ice cream on his head. He's playing opossum? He's teasing us.

@Aycharaych
That skill works in cars as well, although when someone stupid does something you can't overcome, in a car you have a better chance of surviving.

@RMP
I just blame my Mom for everything, and we both blame each other for my father's death. He never did look where he was going.

@ Derbig
Purely coincidental, they used to say in the rolling credits. Trantor and Coruscant, though -- what fools would we mortals have to be, not to notice the uncanny at work in that coincidence.?

I got two words for you, pal: Haynes Manuals. They "cannot be beat" I would never be without one.
Looking at my bookshelf I have three that I can see without getting up.. I have to keep most of my books in the basement though I'm not sure my floors would handle the load.
They have seriously declined in quality recently. The last one I bought didn't even have a decent picture of the valve train on a 2.3 Ford/Mazda engine.
For a lot of the popular cars, Autozone.com has pretty good repair guides online..
For an example:

@ Aycharaych
You say that "I've been riding motorcycles" so I can assume you don't ride Harley's. Whatcha got these days?

Coincidence.?
Karl Marx - K. Marx - K Mart!
Coincidence? I think not!

Star Wars
Quite a bit of Star Wars came from Joseph Campbell's work on mythology.

Aycharaych/Heinlein/Motorcycles...
30 years on 2 wheels myself- it crtainly taught me how dumb the "average" driver realy is...
Starship Troopers is not a pro-fascist screed- it simply speaks to the issue of how we balance selfishness with loyalty to a group. Heinlein actually anicipated much of the current theorizing from evolutionary biology in this regard. Remember, to vote or hold elected office you weren't required to be a combat veteran- you simply had to volunteer and accept that it might cost your life- i.e. putting the group's welfare ahead of your own. If GWB had been a conscientious objector and spent Viet Nam in a leper hospital as an aide, that would be acceptable to me...
Ever read "Gulf"? It anticipated much of what we discuss here in terms of why the little man can't tell the difference between an unattracive truth and a prettily packaged lie...

OT A topic that will be much discussed this week
From Democrats.com:
Iraq Fax-in: Let's Show Congress How We Feel
March 19 marks the 5th Anniversary of Bush's disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq - yet there is no end in sight.
The costs so far are staggering: 4,000 young Americans killed, tens of thousands maimed... 1 million Iraqis killed, millions maimed... $562 billion in tax dollars stolen from our children... $3 trillion cost to our economy through veterans care, weapons replacement, higher oil prices, and the collapsing dollar. All that in just 5 years!
We elected a Democratic Congress in 2006 to bring our troops home, but they keep giving Bush blank checks. Incredibly, Congress will soon vote on another $102 billion blank check.
On this 5th Anniversary, it is time for everyone who hates this occupation to do something about it. And we're making it as simple and effective as we can.
We're calling it the Iraq Fax-In. It's like a sit-in, only you can do it from home.
http://iraqfaxin.com
1. Fax an image to Congress that visually expresses how you feel about the invasion and occupation of Iraq. We've posted a few ideas, but we welcome all of yours!
http://iraqfaxin.com
2. Email your Representatives by signing our "Out of Iraq" petition on the right side here:

And thanks for all you do to make the world a better place.

R.M.P. etc.,
The new inmate in the local jail asked the small time jeweler if he may please borrow the jailers gold diamond wedding ring?
YKW stole it for a left ear ring.
YKW drove a bike into a Wendy's Hamburger Store and scared Aycharrych almost to death.
YKW went to the V.A. but was denied benefits for the big head Antlers that were broke from bumping into big Timber trees.

Say it isn't so!
"They have seriously declined in quality recently."
Very possibly their car manuals have, but their bike manuals are better than ever, better, for an owner than a factory service manual. I just got one for my Super Hawk, and it's a master piece. Complete, well put together, and supremely useful. Today's motorcycles (I said motorcycles, not Harleys) are more servicable than ever- if you have the information. But the procedures are not obvious, not everything is aproached directly.
Here's an example- I was laboriously stripping down each side of my fairing to reach the engine. A terrible task, replete with plastic fasteners and cracking plastic tabs. Then, I get my Haynes. Whaddyuknow! The entire fairing comes off as a well- braced unit, by removing four screws! Right straight over the front. Never would have known without manual. That right there was worth the price.
