I wasn't trying to do anything. The point I made is that this an inevitable expansion of governance. It's not about this leader or that one or even the cynical "They're all criminals blah blah". And woe to they who believe in partisan magic.

  • Valiant defenders of the rule of law(?)

    Another terrific post, Glenn. Thanks.

I feel significantly more ill at ease than usual.

I am not seeing any indicators that anyone in Congress, the Senate, or the media, and of course, the Department of JustUs, never mind the two remaining Democratic candidates, truly give a shit or plan to act on any of this now or after the election.

I think its pretty telling that the houses of congress confirmed Mukasey in the first place, knowing that he was worse than even the slippery Alberto Gonzalez and a loyal Bushie.

One could justifiably surmise, for example, that fear of retribution from the Bush cabal is the universal motivating factor.

More and more, though, I find myself wondering if they don't all also view the Constitution as 'just a goddamn piece of paper'....

  • There is an "independent arm" of the DOJ?!

There exists a section of the Department of Justice that hasn't been hollowed out and then filled with liars, Republican yes-men, and souless incompetent political operatives of the administration that are willing to break any law or bury any government wrongdoing? Wow, that IS shocking! This is what happens when the Rove leaves the Whitehouse...

  • @omooex

I have occasionally been taken aback at the energy behind some of Glenn's responses but I just remind myself that we're all just individuals here and any attempt to judge someone's elses reactions based on my own expectations just limits my range of experience.

  • "woe to they who believe in partisan magic"

    True that.

  • Paul Dirks

I agree. But when you let someone know that you think they're being rude, and they tell you that they don't care if it bothers you, as Glenn did in a recent response to one of my posts--in which I essentially agreed with him--that's more than just going against my expectations. That's being purposefully rude. As I've said, I've done it a few times here, but I'm trying to keep a lid on it; I think others could benefit from that approach.

  • @omooex, WT

I have been a little distressed to note that Glen's responses to posters (including me) have been needlessly rude and overly sarcastic.

That's what we pay him for. If you haven't tipped him lately you should.

This is the new media. The new pen may not be mightier than the new swords. They certainly are sharper. Don't try it at home. Don't run down the hall with it. You might put an eye out. Leave it to the professionals.

    WT,

You're cracking me up. Don't bring a giant puppet head to an SDS meeting unless it explodes!

  • sin and secrecy

prunes--hadn't thought of that angle, you may be right. I was thinking more along the lines of who actually makes money off of the right--who benefits from the 4th amendment in the same way that gun makers and sellers benefit from the 2nd amendment. but your point seems solid.

lwm--don't know where the other sins may be enshrined within the constitution...not even sure I correctly remember what all of those sins were. Jaywalking? Singing out of key?

  • omooex

I too have noticed signs of frustration in some of Glenn's responses to posts. The fact that he essentially replied [the ends justify the means] when asked about his new friendship with the Catholic church over the Hagee endorsement of St. John is, IMO, a clear sign of the dire situation this nation is in.

  • @ northwestwoods, GG

Scott Horton's column today is a must read: he discusses how Mukasey is creating a Nurenburg defense for Bush &Co., and how it contravenes the last three revolutions. Rule of law vs. King is the law argument is presented incredibly powerfully.

GG: Having been the target of you ridicule and scorn for calling for action to impeach all offenders who broke the oath of office to protect and to support the Constitution, might I add that your comments section doesn't lend itself for disclosure of citizen action. Your broad and sweeping assumption that people are calling for action without follow through is invalid. The more you "smack people in the face" instead of inviting them to describe the mechanics and processes to affect the outcome they desire would have much better effect.

When I wrote to you off list to explain that, your one line reply was dehumanizing and contemptuous.

You are very, very intelligent, but your wisdom isn't on display during these times.

Certain that I will be dismissed as the sub-human scum to which you previously deemed me, I won't darken your comments section again, as I am fully aware of being unwelcome.

How many others will turn aside, I wonder? They certainly won't dare to speak up to the all powerful Greenwald, lest they be deemed unworthy and ridiculous, as well.

    You win, Mr. Greenwald.

  • Backing Up Nequals

I took a quick look at Nequals posts here and they are a pillar of good grammar, well-constructed arguments and positive commentary. I could only hope to be so polite and constructive in my responses. So I am herein doing my duty and backing up his post in solidarity.

  • Meh

Personally, I haven't found the environment around here to be as pervasively rude and abusive as omooex and Nequals1 describe it... I kind of fled here quite some time ago from sites I found much worse because of the often high level of the discussion at UT.

However, I can certainly add my voice to any call for people to read the totality of others' writings, and to give better than you get in terms of courtesy. Nothing's easier than flaming someone you don't have to look in the eye... similarly, taking the time and effort to elevate online discourse pays off in more ways than one.

"I have been a little distressed to note that Glen's responses to posters (including me) have been needlessly rude and overly sarcastic..."

    _____

I sent him an email asking for clarification (about the "without any oversight" PAA assertion), and got a quick but testy response, asking me exactly what I was asking -- which was right there clearly IN the fucking letter.

Dude, we're all busy, and we're all on the same team here trying to defend our Constitution. Even us Little Unimportant Peeps.
