Gore was a pompous, lying bore and Kerry was an awkward flip-flopping weakling. Maybe Gore's lost some of the pomposity now that he doesn't have to deal with the pressures of running for President, but those were fair characterizations at the time. The media also largely depicted Bush as a dimwit. I don't really see the systemic unfairness you're talking about.
