Will the 2008 election be dominated by the same type of small-minded, petty distractions that have characterized the last several decades of elections?

  • The 2008 Election Is Getting Hotter Than Ever

I am simply amazed at the fear tactics leveled against Obama and his wife. I guess some people would prefer sending our nation's youth to die in foreign lands (a la John McCain or Clinton, who supported the war) than Barack Obama. Priorities, priorities.

Yes, my definition of "bipartisan" is that it must be serious bipartisanship, on a serious issue.

What serious issue is there - Iraq, health care, immigration, national security, tort reform, judges -- on which Obama hasn't taken the orthodox liberal Democrat position in the Senate?

Please don't bother me with Obama's co-sponsorship of legislation on trivialities. You could do well to answer this question: What legislative positions has Obama taken that are compromise positions which offend his party's base? (As I have noted with McCain.) Of those, what positions has Obama taken in the interest of bipartisanship? (As per McCain's joining with the Gang of Fourteen.)

I notice you dropped taxes and the economy from your list. Stay tuned, I'll demonstrate how the Republican party is no more conservative on any of these other issues than they are on sticking you with backdoor taxes through debt.

  • I hope, I hope

I hope that the American voter will ignore these people, but I doubt it.

  • Michelle Obama

    I like her.

I am curious to see what the Rovian Horde does with her. In many ways, she's like HRC in 1992: a strong, smart, professional, post-60's woman who is married to the presidential contender.

In 1992 HRC was attacked unmercifully: how *dare* she change her name? How *dare* she think of keeping her career? How *dare* she get annoyed at stupid questions from the press? How *dare* she be less than perfect? (And, what's up with her hair!?) Get the pitchforks!

Then, and now, we were told these attacks weren't sexist :it was "HRC", not "women," who were "the problem."

Well, Obama hasn't even clinched the nomination yet, and I'm hearing some of the same stupid bombs thrown at Michelle Obama (which I think equally outrageously unfair).

I certainly hope these tactics are abandoned (so far, the Obamas seem impervious to the typical petty attacks that accompany election season). But, if the song because "It *was* just HRC, now it's "just" her *and* Michelle Obama," I will never be convinced that this isn't pure misogyny.

  • Get Real

Obama and Patrick are a new product that has been discovered, packaged and mass produced. America is buying, the media is buying, and I have got to ask myself why? We are all hopped up on feel good rhetoric from the Obama-Patrick politician dolls. Pull the string and hear exactly what it is that you want to hear. I think it is because Americans can't think critically. I asked my sister why she is supporting Obama and she said simply, "its time for a change. I am tired of reading about the Clintons." She has a masters degree and could not come up with a rational reason (based on why he is a good candidate apart fromm his speeches) for supporting Obama. This is a soda pop, fast food, "give me something to make me feel good quick" kind of response. We have no discipline. Like the Roman Empire at the time of Caligula, we are self absorbed and profligate. This is why an appeal to American reason does not work.

  • Isoscelesise with that sleaze? Not likely!

So I doubt, should Mr. Obama fulfill my hopes and the hopes of many voters and become President, I don't see him doing any triangulating with the conservatives or the right. They are gonna find no-point, no-how, no-time, to intersect with Obama, at any angle.

And if he doesn't clean out every vestige of the neo-cons, theo-cons, con artists and the Confederacy out of the Federal government, he won't survive politically.

We are talking about a government which, constituted as it was and still is, was unable or unwilling to do anything after Saddam's WMD turned out not to exist. Let's see Obama bi-partisan with those guys.

Why he wants this burden I really can't know, but for Hilary I think truly moving away from the Bush administrations debacles and the conservative rot which afflicts the government generally will be an option. For Obama there will be no choice. If he does not reduce or eliminate them, they will eliminate him, at least politically.

  • @Get Real

No wonder you don't use a "handle". And it's too bad, I'm sure your sister would love to know your opinion of her. I can't remember when I've seen anything half so classy.

  • @ WT-Biblical Ejaculations

In the sweat of thy brow shalt though eat bread.

Or, as Kelly Bundy, who might well be talking about Hillary Clinton, once said: "I earn a living by the sweat of my bra!"

Gosh, if only Al Bundy would run. Peg Bundy would be the best First Lady ever!

  • Rock Stars and Politics

My spirits were trampled by the Right Wing Machine and now by the Obama/Talking Head Machine!

    Texas Democrat

The Talking Heads have endorsed Obama? Great news, my Lone Star friend, great news!

  • @Anon re: Greenwood

I can tell by the cut of your tie, that your an American, well so'm I! He there, Howdy! How-do-ye-so? And while we're on the subject, how's the old wazoo?

  • Wazoo? What's that all about?

It's about this long and about this wide and about this great country, about which we is talking about!

  • The brilliant thing is

that Barack Obama has a defense built into his campaign. If he is talking about the need to end mudslinging before anyone even attacks then it gives him credibility and proves his point about the nature of Washington. It's quite amazing.

I live in Texas and already early voted for Obama. I'm taking off work too, so I can caucus for him on March 4.

  • Right wing hate machine

I am an Obama supporter and I have thought a great deal about what is coming and I imagine Obama has too. I am _hoping_ that:

    1. The majority of the American electorate sees though and is fed up with right wing extremism and hate mongering.

    2. The entire Democratic party will rally around with responses and retorts that destroy the swiftboaters. The right wing of the gop is not composed of rocket scientists. In fact, they're downright simple (and small) minded and it's pretty easy to predict their lines of attack. Be Prepared!

    3. The party and the candidate have already prepared attack ads on McCain's record and policies. He certainly has plenty of actual negatives to highlight.

    4. Obama's innate dignity and manner will make the bigots and other lowlifes look as evil as they are. Unlike some I firmly believe that BHO can and will attack when it is needed.

Choosing the Clintons would not be any better. The hate mongers wouldn't use the uniquely Obama tactics, but they would still attack with lies, distortions and innuendos. Both of the Clintons' are well known and provide plenty of fodder...Hillary's "35 years of experience" would be a detriment, not an asset in this case.
