Will the 2008 election be dominated by the same type of small-minded, petty distractions that have characterized the last several decades of elections?
  • Michelle Obama

    I like her.

I am curious to see what the Rovian Horde does with her. In many ways, she's like HRC in 1992: a strong, smart, professional, post-60's woman who is married to the presidential contender.

In 1992 HRC was attacked unmercifully: how *dare* she change her name? How *dare* she think of keeping her career? How *dare* she get annoyed at stupid questions from the press? How *dare* she be less than perfect? (And, what's up with her hair!?) Get the pitchforks!

Then, and now, we were told these attacks weren't sexist :it was "HRC", not "women," who were "the problem."

Well, Obama hasn't even clinched the nomination yet, and I'm hearing some of the same stupid bombs thrown at Michelle Obama (which I think equally outrageously unfair).

I certainly hope these tactics are abandoned (so far, the Obamas seem impervious to the typical petty attacks that accompany election season). But, if the song because "It *was* just HRC, now it's "just" her *and* Michelle Obama," I will never be convinced that this isn't pure misogyny.
