The fun and excitement of civilization wars (fought from afar)

Believing that one is waging paramount war against the most evil enemy ever is a garden-variety psychological need, not a political or ideological conviction.

The letters thread is now closed.

Before going to bed to eat candy kisses.. in bed

I can't help myself.

I am just wanting to apologize for stealing a penny candy gumdrop over fifty years ago.

The pang! Oh, guilt. merci-my!

I'd die if I did not soon confess.

I'd say Nietzsche would like a lawyer like modern Glenn Greenwald.

If he was alive, he would buy Glenn a bowl of rice and chicken soup.

A garden-variety-diversity, salvation plan, is a great idea in such corrupt GOP times.

GLENN GREENWALD, AMERICAN PATRIOT

GG's flu didn't hurt his focus any. After reading this, I'd have gladly brought him chicken soup, aspirin, and Niquil, and payed a "Nurse Goodbody" to attend to his every need.

If our finally awakening Congress can continue to resist threats from the Bush/Cheney Crime Cartel and their Evil Minions, led by Ohio's bloviating pompous ass(hole) Rep., John Boehner, we may yet see the Little Decider and his Fatass Puppet Master, along with some Telecoms, brought up on much deserved charges for arrogantly and repeatedly breaking our Laws and subverting our Constitution.

Have Nancy and the Dems finally figured out that the American people would back a call by Congress for Impeachment and prosecution of these scumbags??? Only time will tell.

I'm here B.

If 'ole Anonymust or Pedinska were around, we could all beg them for chocolate cupcakes?

No cupcakes, but if I did, I'd surely share.

That wierd elation we feel when real, regular people just. might. triumph. over bigots and bullies.

The hard work is all Pakistani, and shouldn't be underestimated. [...] there are hopeful signs. They have a successful India to compete with next door. And the lawyers have considerable political capital with the people.

And the border regions are sick of war. [...] There's at least the chance that the Pakistanis may show the world a whole new way to defeat religious extremism. Kinda make the RWA faction here look stupid if they did, wouldn't it? -- ondelette

They may. It's good that you posted these letters about the Pakistan elections. It would make many enemies of decent, humane existence unhappy if they have even some success. God be with them.

Agree with Holly, and thank Ondelette

for keeping us aware of the significant developments in Pakistan that will not only affect us, but should inspire us.

Pedinska & ....

Late at night on President's Day, a Maryland cat-phobic-farmer wonders,

if you were elected Ohio-State feline career Ohio-Lab Science Technician,

because you own two Siamese feline cats that jump on guest as they sleep? heh.

Well, the next time I visit you, I'll bring wild Doberman Pinchers to pinch you where?

Monday, February 18, 2008 08:44 PM

To Pedinska.

An apologies to Pedinkska's cats,

for my loud snores as the cats perched,

on the panting chest of a human guest.

I still say, "I ache and go achy hoopla!"

I sneeze if I see a Siamese feline cat.

Greenwald's attack on Mark Steyn is bizarre.

What an odd article. Greenwald is basically saying that Steyn and his fellow 'neocons' are 'chicken little's shouting "the sky is falling!" to satisfy their own dilusions of grandeur. I'm willing to entertain that idea, except that Greenwald doesn't back it up with any tangible proof. Give us some solid arguments, Greenwald, on why you think that the Islamist threat isn't dangerous. Secondly, Greenwald portends to psychoanalyse Steyn without providing any anecdotal evidence of having met Steyn, or interviewing anyone who knows Steyn well.

It seems to this observer that Greenwald doesn't like Steyn's opinions. He finds them distasteful. So he's attempting to discredit Steyn by transposing an alterior motive on to him for his opinions. But there are other motives that Steyn may have for expressing his particular opinion. Could it be that Steyn simply wants to make money selling books? Once we try to definitively attach a motive to a man's behavior that we don't know, I think we're staggering into sketchy territory. If Steyn's ideas are so off the mark, then why not attack his ideas? They should be easy to rebut. Character assassination isn't the way you win people over to your side of the argument.

Ah, pop psychology. It never fails, they always diagnose themselves.

"It takes one to know one" is never more true than when listening to amateur psychologists.

There is nothing more psychologically invigorating than the belief that you are staring down the Greatest and Most Evil Enemy Ever in History, courageously waging glorious war for all that is Good and Just in the world.

Is that why you do what you do, Glenn? The faux warrior of the left, taking on all of the vast right wing conspirators of the media, the corporate world, and their bible thumping followers? The pen really is mightier than the sword, you courageous warrior, you.

Thanks for the small glimpse into your psyche.

@SleepWithLions

Your other points aside, I'd just like to take exception to one you raise that is constantly seen here and elsewhere. Islamic terrorists are a threat. No one denies that point. The question is whether the US's response to said threat is reasonable, or even productive.

I guess one more thing, Glenn needs no one to defend him, but I'd suggest you read through some of his archives to see where Glenn has taken down the current strategy (by Steyn and others) piece by piece.

If that doesn't satisfy you, for lack of better source material on my part - think to movies. How many movies have you seen where the protagonist starts out like any other person, only to be roused to vengeance by a violent or oppressive act by a foreign power? Off the top of my head, think 'Red Dawn', or 'Collateral Damage', or 'The Patriot', or pick whatever strikes your fancy. The point being that an overly heavy handed response is counterproductive, because it turns otherwise moderate and reasonable people against us (and with good reason). Righteous anger is a dangerous thing (and the US has no monopoly on it), and too often we in the US are misled as to what might have produced such anger.

To clarify, I no more condone terrorist attacks against the US than I do the response of Bush and his enablers. Dead innocents are dead innocents... whether from crashed planes or cluster bombs dropped on populated areas.

Warrior or Hired Hand?

Mark Steyn, a capable word manipulator for right wing media, long ago sold his soul to corporate masters. For years, he has been squire to convicted newspaper ex-magnate Baron Black of Crossharbour. During the 2007 trial of Conrad Black, Steyn set an embarrassing standard of partiality in a blog at Toronto’s Macleans Magazine where he provided an impassioned and uncritical defence of his former employer.

This regular cheerleader for the Iraq War is also a belittler of people with environmental concerns. In February 2007, dismissing the concept of Global Warming, Steyn wrote, “the western Arctic’s a little warmer, the eastern Arctic’s colder.” His information no doubt confounds scientists who observed unprecedented polar melting that opened ice-free passages through arctic waters of both Canada and Russia during the summer of 2007.

Steyn and faux-warrior friends are always ready to explain why the defence of freedom requires diminution of freedom.
