Not embarrassed at all.
You give Bush way too much credit. The whole thing had to be a mutually agreed-upon set-up, with Wallace playing the "gosh I just don't get it" role. Even the written script indicates one of the more rehearsed exchanges of the Bush-Fox years. Bush's faux acknowledgement of the other side was well calculated to make him appear a reasonable guy who has given all this lots of knitted-brow consideration.
Someone needs to write a book about how to spot the more subtle ploys of "perception management." I've spent some time in the public relations industry, so even its more twisted permutations (like this one) practically shout to me.
