Ha ha, I get it. Your joke is that the LEFT is better
The Right wing which people like Hinderaker represent enoble, and depend upon, a myth of being internally victimized at the hands of an all-powerful Leftist culture, and externally threatened by enemies 'who hate freedom.'
The left AND the right are equally powerful bullies destroying this nation from within.
Gee, how come your Dumcraps STILL haven't bothered to bring back Habeas Corpus? Whatsa matter? Rights are irrelevant?!!
You're ALL FASCISTIC FREAKS, the left AND the right.
And Mike Savage despises both sides, as I DO.
Vote Ron Paul if this nation is to survive.

Glenn is right on the mark . . .
Glenn's closing assessment is right on the mark. As a former Southern Baptist, Republican from the deep South, I can tell you that is the core of the red state mindset. As a more naive and more insecure young man, I once believed entirely in reverse prejudice against white men.
What's strange is to say that, having rejected that mindset, I must say it is not an inaccurate assessment. That is, much of Western history has been about the dominance of white, Christian patriarchy. As the West (and the world) embraces diversity, it is inevitable that the monopoly white men once had on power will be displaced by a wider range of demographics. That's not a bad thing. But it's not surprising that a segment of the population is threatened by this historic, and generally unprecedented, shift.
Of course, this resentment exists because we live in a society that emphasizes identity formed through one's race and gender and not through one's class. If that were the case, the transition mentioned above would be of no concern as long as populist concerns were being addressed by the powers that be. Of course, it is the wealthy ruling class that typically gets to set the terms of the debate, so they emphasize the divisions that serve them best. This practice was present at the nation's inception, particularly regarding the matter of slaves and Native Americans.

I Don't Know About Glenn's Humor
But if he was the attorney opposite mine, I'd go for a settlement. I'd want no part of that relentless tooth-drilling.

@ Proximity Warning
The thing I like about Glenn's sarcasm is it is obviously sincere. Anyone who has to take on the dark forces that he faces every day is going to get a little jaded, but let's hand it to Glenn, he holds it together pretty well. The thing about Glenn is he obviously cares, and he is a logical man so the illogic embodied by the RNC is surely very frustrating. I myself can relate to that.
Keep up the good work Glenn, I read your column often and am never disappointed. You are by far the most important writer at Salon.com.

Wanker
You set yourself up as the humor arbiter.
Give us an example of what you find funny.
My contention is, part of your right-wing pathology is an inability to even recognize humor.
C'mon. Prove me wrong.

Surely He's Joking
Did he really write honorable, law-abiding businesspeople?
Has he actually met businesspeople? Do we really need to say "Enron?" "Archer Daniels Midland?" "First Kuwaiti?"
"Halliburton?"
He's a funny, funny man, that Hinderaker.

YKW has me hungry for a nutritious sunflower, olive oil, green house lettuce, spinach, and mizuna green salad with Vinaigre sauvage.

The Question for ProWar&Death
ProWar&Death, January 31, 2008 06:38, writes:
"Grow up, Greenwald
"Glenn seems to think his leaden attempts at irony are insightful instead of puerile and bitchy. Why doesn't he spell out his criticisms of the position instead of mock-agreeing with it like some spiteful schoolgirl? Grow up, Greenwald."
Dear ProWar&Death,
I'm reminded by your devastating riposte above that you've never responded to my question some months back concerning why you aren't over in the Sands of the Middle East helping with the heavy lifting in the mortal struggle of the Empire against the forces of filthy insurgency there.
I realize that you're performing for the Homeland a humble service of sorts by pointing out the puerility of blogger Glenn Greenwald's political rhetoric, but wouldn't it be much more immediately and deeply satisfying to your love of war and death if you were actually Over There, spilling the blood and intestines of the heathen devils and wiping your gleaming blade on the camos encasing your manly thighs?
Why such a fiercely and nobly courageous advocate of war and death as you is here, rather than there, is perplexing, to say the least.
Can you enlighten?

@ brightstar65
I understand your hostility, however if we were to read Glenn's columns with a little bit of an open mind we'd see that he is not standing up for Dems over Republicans, he is critical of both sides and the entirety of the politics of our day. I really don't understand why Glenn gets hated on so much, he seems to be an intellectually honest person who would like to help to improve all of our minds.
(Glenn: I know you don't need anyone standing up for you but I'm in the mood to do so today as I often am. Your work is solid.)

@Zandru
You wrote: "and the reality that, for most Americans, logic is an unfamiliar skill"
Yes. I am on the front lines of that fact, as it were: I teach introduction to logic. And tomorrow I will give my first lecture to a new class of freshman, who will stare at me (most of them, not all) as if I am speaking some foreign language or describing some incredibly exotic technique. And I am at a small liberal arts college where the tuition is high and most of them are the children of those with enough money to pay the tuition, who went to the "good high schools": and as it has happened every year for the last thirteen years I will be telling them things that take them unawares. There is always a kind of continuum in this of course, ranging from those who have no inkling of basic logic to those who already have some sense of it.
But to a solid majority it will be like I am speaking an ancient dead language. It is my opinion we are living in the ruins of western civilization (or maybe we have always been living in the ruins of a grand idea that was never really realized, I am not sure). But then what is important is to take it one person at a time. People can begin to think for themselves, one at a time. And I know this this because I have seen it happen. What is important is the people I will be speaking to tomorrow, each one of them. What is important is each one of you being true to what you know and continuing to think. You have to hold on to what is important and be true to it in each moment you have, even and especially when everything is going bad. I believe all I will have when I am dying is the integrity of my life as I have lived it. In my last moments that will be my heaven or my hell. Think of what hell all these false politicinas are condemning themselves to. It fairly makes ones hair stand on end.
