Today's FISA vote

Live-blogging today's proceedings in the Senate.

The letters thread is now closed.

@Greenwald

"Bush Criticizes Dems for Blocking Eavesdropping Powers"

"Democrats block FISA renewal -- as of Friday, NSA loses key surveillance powers"

"Dems refuse to allow vote on FISA renewal"

You should take odds. You'd probably be rich.

Personally, I want to see:

"Dems Accuse GOP of Being Soft on Crime".

Now if we can just connect the dots...

...from this:

The one (and only) "principle" that can really inspire many of these Senators to take a stand is the protection of their Senatorial prerogatives. Many of them don't actually have any beliefs other than that.

...to an acknowledgment that we desire nothing less than to retain our own constitutional prerogatives.

Sometimes, a real-life analogy is the only way to communicate through the fog.

Kitt:

Excuse me? You meant, Osama?

Bless you for catching that. I quoted that passage of the comment in my post and only noticed the error because of your comment (though I've since received several emails about it - that's an error that people detect quickly).

Landrieu

Glenn, no need to use those cross-outs in your update. I was listening to the votes today [particularly the first one]. Landrieu initially voted "no," but then changed her vote to "yes."

Mikulski was the last to vote, and she [surprisingly] voted "no."

Harry Reid's Personality

I posted a line or two earlier about the 'Majority Leader', Harry Reid. In that post I pointed out and quoted a couple of his phrases that he used in his floor speech to 'beat down and act mad' about the Republican minority.

Much of what happened today might go down in history in one way or another. But Harry Reid's words and demeanor will go down as less than the strength of Deputy Dog when he was "Busy gardin' the henhouse'. Pitiful old man, is Harry Reid.

Whatchagonna do thar Deputy Dog?

Not sure I have enough vodka in the house for all the pom-tinis that are going to be required...

You forgot newkewlar. ;->

I forgot the mattresses...

If one follows the rules, including Pedinska's and Tomhere's, padding on sharp surfaces and mattresses on the floor are strongly recommended.

Add in "uh's" and vacant stares, and all but the most hardened alcoholics should expect to tip over after about eleven minutes.

Glenn, you're a true American hero,

no matter what the ultimate results might be.... you've been speaking out at a crucial time for all of us. You helped make this happen, as did many mobilized citizens....you force the lies into the light at a time when powerlessness has become a fact for the majority of American citizens. Thank-you for the inspiration!

CSPAN

just mentioned that republicans were considering a 7 day extension to the PAA. How could they do that? Glenn, your explanation made a lot of sense to me. Can you see how they could squeeze this extension through in the time left?

Pedinska

It could also be spelled "authorimoanian" if one wanted to give extra emphasis to the whingeing aspect of these folks.

I'm serious, if there isn't one already, there needs to be a word, a single word, that captures that noxious blend of modern Republican authoritarianism, condescension, and mendacity to which we have grown so accustomed. It is so distinct a brew, like the chemical cocktail of lethal injection.

Really, the "claim that companies should never 'second-guess' the 'judgment of the President regarding what's legal' -- which [Glenn] heard from John Cornyn and Saxby Chambliss" on the Senate floor today -- comes from such a malodorous, festering well of criminal deception that we must put a word to that terrible void for fear that it could consume our very souls if left to lurk namelessly in our midst.

Like a witch's spell, the virulent strain must be imprisoned within a word, then shrunken and pinioned to a mere inch in the Devil's Dictionary of forsaken history.

What scares me

even on NPR it was phrased that this was "presumably", or some language to that effect, Dubya's "final" SOTU.

I think it was also over in the Washington Post that something was made of the fact that similar language was used, i.e. that this might NOT be his finale.

I guess anyone can go and see all of the other kook stuff that I've spewed to all of you in the past, but man I can sure imagine some scenarios where these folks find some way NOT to have an election.......

Discuss please... Am I crazy? If I had told you on 9/10 that we would be suspending Habeas would you have said I was crazy then?

Saved by the alcohol?

all but the most hardened alcoholics should expect to tip over after about eleven minutes.

And that's a bad thing how?

This may be one of the few times where worshipping the porcelain god comes before the overconsumption...

Pedinska

The only way I can see is if the House is on board with the compromise and votes a 7-day extension tomorrow.

1 drink for every time Bush lies? Jesus H. Alcoholic Christ, I'd better run to Safeway, I only have a fifth of Blanton's.

I'll be wasted by 6:12PM PDT.

Soon be time

to watch the show?

Where oh where

Is be-bop-o?

Expound for me, cat.

Expound.

Monday, January 28, 2008 05:21 PM

must see TV?

As much as the SOTU will certainly be shite, the democratic rebuttal has the potential to be scathing and fantastic.

key word = potential

Is there a non-zero chance that the congressional dems would walk out, turn their backs, boo and hiss, or coordinate any other blatantly obvious protest towards this criminal making the speech tonight?

Monday, January 28, 2008 05:25 PM

Absolutely DCLaw1

Like a witch's spell, the virulent strain must be imprisoned within a word, then shrunken and pinioned to a mere inch in the Devil's Dictionary of forsaken history.

Well said. I wish I could write half as well as you when you are inspired like this. A shame it's festering pustules like Chambliss and Cornyn and their ilk who are creating needs like this.

We should get Anonymust and some of the Chocolate Interrobangers in on this. They have much better talent in wordsmithing than I. Hopefully they'll wander by soon.
