The Democratic majority leader finally takes a bold, aggressive stance -- against members of his own caucus -- to ensure that the president's demands are met in full.

  • Leverage, but only if they use it

To repeat something I said on the previous thread, the all-important "Economic Stimulus" bill is all the leverage the Democrats need if they only would use it. They can make this simple. Bush can have his stimulus bill very quickly after:

    • Retroactive immunity and basket warrants are off the table. Minimization procedures with real teeth are back.
    • Every subpoena is satisfied.

    That would be true bipartisanship.

By the way, here's a little tidbit I just ran across from the folks who already have started that little party in Davos:

AT&T Inc. is still evaluating whether to examine traffic on its Internet lines to stop illegal sharing of copyright material, its chief executive said Wednesday.

CEO Randall Stephenson told a conference at the World Economic Forum that the company is looking at monitoring peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, one of the largest drivers of online traffic but also a common way to illegally exchange copyright files.

It looks like Senator Dodd would be helping more that just the FISA bill if he can keep his "colleagues" away from that meeting this weekend.

  • Sigh.

Glenn, I love your blog, but sometimes I can't even bring myself to read what you write.

    This is so depressing.

  • Never bring a knife to a gunfight

The Democratic party is corrupt from the inside out, and Republicans take full advantage every single time. We need radical change. I mean RADICAL. A complete house cleaning of all these spineless, worthless pathetic excuses for Congressmen.

    Feinstein

    Reid

    Leahy

    Pelosi

Hell, all of them except Feingold and Dodd at this point as far as I'm concerned. The country has turned its back on the idea of a radical unchecked executive, but STILL these worms can't enable further transgressions against our rule of law fast enough.

Its enough to make one long for a guillotine.

    SHAME!!!!

  • @GG

If it's "your job" edit the teaser on the Salon Front page...

  • Glenn

May I suggest that everyone send a one word email to Sen. Reid's office and encourage their friends to do likewise.

    The word?

    Resign.

Reid is a waste of both skin and oxygen.

He needs to GO and he needs to GO now.

Frankly, if I could trade a Reid resignation for a Republican President in November, I would.

  • three phrases..

from the gettysburg address: "of the people, by the people, for the people." remember them? the encapsulation of democracy in nine words.

wouldn't it be nice if the federal government was "for the people?" harry reid, with all the beltway grandees, is daily demonstrating that you don't get government for the people, without government by the people.

  • Harry Reid

does not maintain a public email address and one must go through his website to contact him.

I just did that and here is the text of my email...

    "Resign.

You have done more damage to the United States in the period you have been Senate Majority Leader than George W. Bush and Richard Cheney COMBINED because you have betrayed the trust of all decent Americans.

You are a disgrace to the Democratic Party, the State of Nevada, and citizens of this country.

    Again...

    Resign.

    NOW."

I realize that it won't do any good but it felt good anyway.

  • Dodd should inflict

as much pain on all of them as he can. This is just the most pitiful thing I've ever seen from Dems, and my Senator Ken Salazar is surely on Reid's side. He's refused to answer numerous emails or phone messages on this very question.

  • hmmmm..

Sure a lot of retreating going on in the Senate.

  • Contact your senators

It seems unlikely the DC bubble people have any clue how concerned people are outside the beltway. Contact your senators and ask not just that they vote against it, but that they support the filibuster.

A lot of good that will do. I still haven't received acknowledgement from Mary Landreau that she received my request for the LAST fillibuster on this bill.

We're going to have to hit the streets again.

  • Harry and Mitch

I live in Senator McConnell's neighborhood, by far Louisville's most liberal zip code, and oftentimes see him in the local grocery store or at a restaurant. While I've been tempted to speak to him, I've generally refrained for fear of saying something that might get me in trouble. Anyways, he's as sneaky and shifty as they come and yet you almost have to admire him. He has played Senator Reid from day one and gotten the best of him on nearly every occassion. I would argue that short of himself being Majority Leader, he couldn't in his wildest imagination dream of a better advocate for his cause and that of President Bush than Reid himself.

I read what you say, listen to people on the street and keep up on the latest polling and it's clear that Bush and the Republican agenda are extremely unpopular, if not despised by a very sizeable majority of the American public. Yet this does not appear to register inside the Village and they go on beding over backwards to appease Mr. 24%. I've never missed an election, primary or general, since I became eligible to vote in 1988, but I'm to the point where I wonder if I should simply throw up my arms and say "that's it, I'm done".

I have no representation in the Senate and while I'm lucky to have John Yarmuth as my Representative, who else is there to vote for? If they are only going to act like Republican Squared, why should I donate my time, money and energy to getting these clowns elected? I've yet to hear an answer and come November, I might just sit at home.

  • Privacy Rights are like Tools in a basement workshop

Homeowners buy them to make repairs on their house when things like plumbing or light switches break.

If someone sneaks into your basement and takes them you may not notice immediately. We don’t necessarily inventory them daily but when something breaks and we go to fetch those tools, they are gone. So when the proverbial water starts filling your kitchen and you realize that the monkey wrench and the sump pump are gone, you realize that you have 2 problems compounding your predicament. The water quickly gets beyond your ability to control.

Who do you call for help?

The burglars who took your tools away?
