  • Vote For Me Because I'm Christian

So, if Gov. Richardson had sent out spanish-language fliers to his hispanic constituents, touting his record on hispanic issues- would you take such similar offense?

And, what if Gov. Richardson had instead said openly that, if elected, he planned to run the country with hispanic-american issues at the forefront of his priorities?

“On a related note, did anyone see Jon Stewart's interview with Jim Wallis last night? While I can't get behind everything Wallis has said over his career(by a long shot), what he said in that interview resonated with me, especially after this discussion thread. I think many people here would appreciate what Wallis had(has) to say about religion in this country. You can check out the video at thedailyshow.com”

    Yes, I did see that.

I had never heard of this guy and am embarrassed to admit that I was ambivalent about even watching the segment when he came on. I took a look and thought, in sequence:

    1. Can I tolerate watching another fat dogmatic nutjob proselytize and spout overbearing religiosity for political purposes?

    2. Maybe I can take it if Stewart properly skewers him for a couple of laughs.

While this mental dilemma was ongoing, the interview commenced and I was quite pleasantly surprised. I then thought, where did this guy come from and why haven’t I seen more like him?

I still don’t know much about the guy; but see him as a beacon of hope and reason in the inescapable conclusion that MORALITY cannot be separated from politics in any rational society. Unfortunately, the political tradition of this country also dictates that the morality discourse cannot be conducted apart from, nor extricated out of, the "issue" of “do you believe in god?”.

That is just a fact and a recognition of political reality.

That’s also why (particularly in Obama’s swift-boated circumstance) the subject of this thread is, in my opinion, naïve and condescending. This is not a matter of maintaining a scorecard on who is, or is not, pandering to religious voters. It’s a matter of managing to have your voice heard with some credibility within a segment of narrow-minded voters whose judgment is clearly being targeted by scurrilous attacks for political purposes.

Meanwhile, I only hope this guy (Wallis) will get more exposure and that he manages not to get caught in a tryst with two goats, or in an adjacent airport stall playing footsie with some undercover agent.

  • Some people are so irrational about religion

I don't understand people who are now saying they won't vote for a guy who's a Christian because he acknowledged he's a Christian to other Christians? Did you know he was a Christian before this? If he tried to hide the fact that he's a Christian, wouldn't that be similar to him hiding the fact that he was, say, a Muslim? And since he's actually been accused of being a Muslim, some of you are saying he should have denied being a Muslim without mentioning the fact that he's a Christian, and this would have earned your respect?

  • Obama should play every card in the deck..Hillary has no problem crying, dissin MLK and

speaking in tongues at Black events.. I bet she really hates fried chicken and those funky gospel spirituals ...lol,lol,lol

Once again, you miss the point. But if you want to set-up one set of standards for Obama, and one for everyone else, there's nothing much this enemy of freedom can do.

By the way, I'm glad you've dropped that canard, but you have to ask yourself why, when using phrases like Spanish-language fliers and Hispanic issues, you mention Richardson and only Richardson.
