Are there differences between Mike Huckabee's and Barack Obama's overt political appeals as Christians?

  • I enjoy Thrasher's comments..

I think he's off base quite a bit, but I also think he hits the nail on the head from time to time.

But I'm just a troll, what would I know?

Remember, trolls go away if you don't feed them.

    Heh.

  • committed christian Obama

I think that Obama's brochure is offensive and disturbing. This is NOT a Christian country, I do NOT want a president who thinks he is "called" by Christ or any other religious superstition. It further disturbs me that Glenn Greenwald is being put on the defensive for calling the Obama campaign to task for this - it's a completely appalling brochure and has no place whatsoever in a Democrats campaign.

  • Different dialects, same shit

And oh yeah; WT - that's sticky bud, not sticky buds. -- mr snoid

A rose is a rose is a rose. What you call it also depends on whether you're the consumer or producer, and where you're at in the process.

Ahem...not, of course, that such things are relevant here, where -- aycharaych permitting -- we're discussing Christians, not drug warriors.

  • just ask Ron Paul...

Obama is a madrassa educated Muslim terrorist.

But the trilateralist Jews who control the media want you to think hes a Christianist theocrat in order to create a UN controlled one world Nafta superhighway, patrolled by black helicopters, on which to transport all the gold the federal reserve has stolen from white America all the way to Israel.

  • Majorajam

Glenn writes:But I don't see how anyone can read that flier - which is probably the single most overtly religious piece of political adverstisement I've ever seen -- and believe that an overt appeal to Christian voters based on Obama's Christianity isn't part of the motive.

This *is* Glenn's point.. That you fail to see it is evidence of your own political myopia.

Full blown, balls to the wall (a WWII fighter reference BTW) pandering.

This election is quickly becoming a Christianist Panderkreig.

  • @Majorajam

I'm with you on this one.

To what end, I'm not sure, but Glenn has clearly decided to gin up a truly absurd controversy, and he clearly doesn't have a specific point to make here. (And no, his labeling those who chafe at absurd criticism of Obama as lovestruck Obama supporters is not insightful or valuable to the discussion.)

Some of Salon's writers have a habit of expressing their political viewpoints in a very passive-aggressive manner. Glenn hasn't typically been one of them...until this post.

Glenn has been unable to articulate his real point, and frankly, Glenn has veered into Salon's "passive-aggressive" style of political coverage with this blog post.

  • WT

In case you haven't noticed, I've talked about Christians more than anyone tonight.

Or maybe I should say "Christians".

  • Arne: Obviously you have not ignored my posts and thanks for keeping track of other posters

that monitors my posts as well..lol,lol,lol

    Got cha..lol,lol,lol

  • Aych: I know you like to affirm my posts ignore peer pressure it is OK to validate me..

I will not report you to homeland security.. I may need to borrow some duct tape and plastic from you one day...lol,lol,lol

  • To further Glenn's point..

Has anyone ever seen a *more* overt single piece of political advertising?

If this were a Republican ad, every Democrat here would be denouncing it.

    Anyone care to deny it?

  • Thrasher

You know they make *black* duct tape?

And plastic too come to think of it.

    ;-)

  • Jeeze, Glenn

What a difference 4 hours can make. Twenty some pages of letters later... This is getting to be like Ron Paul in Obama terms. We've had the Pauliac swarm, now the Obamaniac swarm. Kind of like migrating colonies of killer bees. There's just all kinds of angry buzz. Someone trap the damned Queen!

All I can say to those outraged here is, it must be nice to feel so strongly about a single candidate. I've been denying myself the luxury until the primary reaches me. And, I sincerely hope that as many of the Democratic candidates as possible are still in the race, when it's my turn to vote.

I read Glenn's question as, Huckabee was criticized for his overt religious appeal to win votes. Given that Obama appears to be doing the same, in a state where explicitly it matters, should Huckabee have been criticized for using the same tactic that Obama is using now? To me, the answer is, no. And, to Huckabee's credit, that's been his position from the very beginning. I don't buy it, but it's been his consistent platform. Now that it's suddenly critical, Obama steps to the pulpit? And, I'm not supposed to snicker, or be suspicious?

Speaking of personal preferences, I didn't like it when Huckabee did it, and I don't like it from Obama any better. The message, from EITHER of them, has a fingernails on the chalk board appeal. Obama may be campaigning in a state that rates his Christianity highly, but it's still being reported in a state where this voter is pretty turned off by it.

  • LOL??

Welcome to the the 21st century already. LOL? Do people still write LOL?? Are these the same sad, lost souls that use those silly little emoticons, those truly incredibly repugnant smiley face things and say, "Have a nice day", and "Dude"?

Troll, indeed. We're talking more like mental midget. In this case however, I think we have a drunk on our hands . . . .

  • No thanks, Mr. Obama

I'm glad you're a committed Christian. I'm not. Not a Christian even. And I've learned that many of the words in your brochure have been used as weapons against those of my faith. So while I will vote for you in November if you're the nominee, I hope I don't have to. Excesses kill. That's too true of religion. Doesn't matter what the religion is. The true believers think it's their way or the highway. Again, no thanks.

  • @Aycharaych

So, Glenn's not-remotely substantiated, politically-charged assertion in the middle of a tightly contested primary is his point? Perhaps this is what you expect of your journalists but my standards are slightly higher.

Btw, as I say, Obama has lost this contest irrespective of what Glenn Greenwald or all of Salon does. I'm just here telling truth to power. ;)

  • Peace, bro

Aycharaych, your choice of subject matter, no matter what it is, is manifestly your own business. I did notice that you've contributed to the current discussion, and FWIW I've never disagreed with your assessment of the war on drugs, or the incarceration of hapless multitudes, and the militarization of the police which it's fostered, let alone the hypocrisy of those who think it's no big deal.

On the other hand, I do think that you're sometimes a bore about it, although not so far this evening. Given your genuine passion for the subject, I should probably avoid twitting you about it. As DCLaw1 (I think) remarked a while back, it's a guilty pleasure, and I regret having indulged in it with you.
