Fleshing out the professor, if it really is the Kent State version, reveals some interesting information:
That Professor Smith weighs in on the idea of using jingoistic patriotism as a media strategy. This is an interesting NPR segment featuring some disparate views including those of RW nutcase Glen Beck (maybe just posing as one for ratings if you listen to the segment). Professor Smith seems to acquit himself well here, despite the fact that he is only quoted twice in the segment:

And here’s That Professor on the 2001 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation changes that opened up high school campuses to “equal opportunity” recruiting of high school students for the military:
“It basically opens them up to solicitation from the military that would be prohibited” under the government's older privacy statute…. “This information is kept private from a whole bunch of other folks that would dearly love to have it,” Smith said. “Why should the military be an exception?”
Here’s that link:

To That Professor’s credit, he also questioned the wisdom of a Cleveland TV station assigning Jerry Springer (yes, THAT Jerry Springer) as their correspondent in coverage of the upcoming Democratic National Convention:

I don’t understand how That Professor Smith would have made the comments I’ve seen here. So I have another Question for the Professor Smith who commented on this thread:
Regarding the importance of Journalism, former Nieman Curator Bill Kovach said “The statement of purpose for the Committee of Concerned Journalists-the organization Kovach founded- should be placed at the entryway of every school of journalism. It states, "The central purpose of journalism is to provide citizens with accurate and reliable information they need in order to make informed judgments in a self-governing society."
How do you measure John King’s interview and CNN’s airing of it against the standard (bold) suggested by Mr. Kovach? I hope you agree that your opinion about this would be more relevant and appreciated than your opinions and speculation about the qualifications of Glenn Greenwald to critique Mr. King’s interview.
... is remarkably similar to how CNN sounds to my ears. The entire channel is filled with what appear to be declarative nouns and no facts.
How you got to teach a course on anything is unbelievable.
So, you can't criticize a talentless shill like King without going to Journalism school first? Moronic. Why don't you ask one of your colleagues to explain to you why this is wrong?
King is not a journalist or a reporter. He is a foppish reader of teleprompters.
emailed me from the Kent State U. address referenced on his bio page confirming his identity as the author of the posts in this thread.
(FYI)
despite our differences of opinion, the correspondence from him was gracious at all times.
It is the duty of MSM Media members to ask UNCOMFORTABLE questions to their guests in an attempt to get to the TRUTH of the matter, not to stroke their elephantine(pun intended) egos or to thrill them with unctuous fawning over them the way John King, Chris Matthews, et cetera ad nauseum did for John McCain. This is not a tea party, as Mao Tse-Tung said with regard to revolution, and the MSM has to ask the hard and painful questions and not make the individual being interviewed "King or Queen for a Day." The FREE RIDE should STOP HERE with the BUCK, ALL BETS ARE OFF, NO HOLDS SHOULD BE BARRED, and NO PRISONERS TAKEN. THAT is the way TRUE JOURNALISM should be done with INTEGRITY and WISDOM, qualities that 99.9% of the Mainstream Media LACK, especially in LOSERS like John King of CNN!
I believe it was he who said, the louder they proclaimed their innocence, the faster we hid our spoons.
"high dudgeon, petulant offense, and melodramatic outrage"
just about nails it...John King, douchebag for the ages.
I know you cannot judge a book by its cover, but can't say that picture of King shows someone who diligently and relentlessly digs up the facts, asks tough questions and does the hard analysis to put the pieces together. Actually that picture screams "Access Hollywood", or one of those celebrity news shows.
"They tell you it's appalling to comment on what they publish to their readers or viewers without first talking to them about it, even though you linked to or even printed in full everything they said and wrote." --GG
Pretty damn straight...and funny too. Kings words and actions in that interview hang him and his email response supports the view that the media is made up of a bunch of self-preening pricks. Where King might be confused is that Glenns article is not there to skewer the "I work for the CNN almighty" King, but uses Kings work in this instance to give another excellent example of the medias generally vapid coverage.
Edward R. Murrow never studied journalism to the best of my knowledge. Ed Murrow, or David Halberstam or many a number of real journalists and reporters would be turning in their graves to hear pandering hacks like King, Russert or Joe Klein referred to as journalists. If the professer considers anyone at CNN, NBC or any other outfit of the corporate media to be a journalist or reporter, he wouldn't recognize genuine journalism if it hit him in the face. Whatever he teaches, wherever he teaches it, it isn't journalism.
Thanks for verifying the prof's identity. Drat - benevolence wasted and suspicions confirmed.
McCain is a war criminal for bombing of civilians in Vietnam and a traitor for violating the UCMJ, Uniform Code of Military Justice. Just why all the mail pundits fawn all over McCain suggests they all harbor latent repressed homosexual desires for McCain. It's bizzare,I mean McCain is 71 years old, a 71 year old sex magnet for male television reciters.
Some of us are interested.

If you buy a lemon car, your criticism of the dealer is not credible, although Timmie would allow you to express yourself, because you never designed or built cars. If your computer is crummy, ditto, since you never studied computer science and never designed computers. According to Timmie, John King, a laughable lightweight prick who can't or won't ask McCain any question that would even remotely qualify as real journalism, is credible, but those who spot his total lack of integrity and professionalism, are not credible, because they never studied or practiced what passes for journalism in his book.
