Hilarious

Wow. And he has no clue about the hilarity of his response.

The kind of reaction is similar to what I'd imagine a despot would have when he finds peasants in his bedroom after they've stormed the palace with pitchforks and torches.

@ the professor

"...But [Mr Kings's] response raises a point that your reply dodges: what reporting did you do? From what I can tell, you referred to what was aired and then proceeded to spill your vitriol all over Mr. King. Judging from other columns about reporters, that appears to be your style. Your privilege, of course, but it does raise the question about your qualifications..."

Prof. Tim Smith, Kent State University.

I respectfully disagree, Professor; the merits of Mr. Greenwald's arguments stand on their own, irrespective of his "qualifications". If you doubt that this is the case, just ask any professor or instructor at your institution who teaches a course in logic.

You Bitch!

Handbags at dawn! Better be careful Glenn, that John King will scratch your eyes right out.

Best piece of journalism AND entertainment CNN's ever been associated with.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 01:16 PM

Oh My!

I'm still laughing, 25 minutes after first reading it. I love how he starts out angry, then waxes indignant, while weaving in perceived insults. Then at the end he gets a little bit misty and reflective about his long and impressive and important career in Professional Journalism.

An unintentional comedy masterpiece!

The nub of the criticism

[Glenn, from the post]: The next time you or your colleagues interview McCain, keep your affection to yourself; skip the part where you lavish him with praise; exercise journalistic skepticism; and just ask real questions.

Which is what King forgets or ignores here: Glenn's complaint isn't that King has favourites (or even shows favouritism on occasion); the gravamen of the complaint is the same as Jon Stewart's on his Crossfire appearance: "Ask REAL questions!!!"

Not that hard. You know, it's kind of what journalisming is all about....

Cheers,

At least I have the intestitnal fortitude to put my handle to my post.

But even if they had been, why less sympathy for troops who are eager to do their job? Why put “troops” in scare quotes?

I'm reminded of the old motto of SAC: Peace is our profession.

I'm also reminded of the quote by a Brit officer in one of the World Wars when his troops were cheering a huge barrage delivered to the enemy: Don't cheer lads, the poor bastards are dying over there.

People who are eager to kill scare me, and they ought to scare you too.

How and why and at whose request did CNN delete John King's name and Terry Moran's name?

(Those names and President Bush's other ad libs do appear in the official White House transcript, which is available online at the whitehouse.gov web site -- which is apparently more trustworthy than CNN.)

Professor Smith's error in logic..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem

An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: "argument to the man", "argument against the man") consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. The process of proving or disproving the claim is thereby subverted, and the argumentum ad hominem works to change the subject.

I've seriously never heard of John King.

But he's kind of an idiot, isn't he?

The way things work....

[Glenn]: The best argument to make against someone is when you just print their own words -- how can they claim they've been treated unfairly?

"You took me out of context."

[again, with emphasis]: The best argument to make against someone is when you just print all and only their own words -- how can they claim they've been treated unfairly?

"You completely took me out of context."

Makes sense in a perverse type of way. ;-)

Cheers,

Professor Johnson is not in radio. This is from the Journalism and Mass Media School at Kent State:

Prof. Timothy D. Smith joined the School of Journalism and Mass Communication faculty at Kent State University in 1986 after for 19 years for the Akron Beacon Journal, leaving as managing editor. He has also worked for the Columbus Dispatch, the Painesville Telegraph and United Press International.

He has bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from Ohio State University and a law degree from the University of Akron. He is the founder and director of the Ohio Center for Privacy and the First Amendment, which specializes in access-to-government issues, headquartered at KSU.

In 1991, while on leave from the university, he served as a law clerk for now-retired Ohio Supreme Court Justice Craig Wright. In June 1991, he was named acting director of the School, a post he held until June 1994, when he returned to teaching reporting and media law courses. He has served as adviser to the Daily Kent Stater, the student newspaper, and is now legal adviser for all student media.

In addition to his teaching duties, Smith serves as a newspaper consultant, an expert witness in media law cases and as a lecturer on media relations, libel, invasion of privacy and public records issues. He is a member of the American and Ohio State bar associations and a founding member of the National Freedom of Information Coalition.

In 1996, he was given the John S. Knight award for excellence in the service of journalism by the Buckeye Chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists. In 1997, he was selected as a fellow of the American Society of Newspaper Editors Journalism Excellence program, a summer newspaper residency for journalism professors. In 2000, he was one of three faculty members to receive the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Kent State University Alumni Association and the University Foundation. He was on Professional Development Leave in Fall 2003, working in the Portage County Public Defenders Office.

Smith and his wife, Jane, an Akron school teacher, have three grown children, Randall, Rachel and Bryan.

Like John King, Professor Johnson had no trouble making a fool of himself. If I lived anywhere near the campus I would love to sit in on his next lecture, he certainly gave his students great fodder to dissect his argument.
