I've read that LBJ
ramped up the war in Vietnam-at the behest of guess-who?
the oil industry.
One of the oil-drum sites or someone else said that the bombing campaign, where we bombed the hell out of Vietnams shoreline and many of the waterways was to ultrasonically "mine" for oil. I guess when the the bomb reverberates or how-can signal whether there is oil below.
This was the reason given for the irrational abuse of a bombing campaign(by us) that destroyed many of the rice fields and means of food for the Vietnamese.

@ William Timberman re: party hats and favors
The pachy male-factor is wearing his plastic toy stethoscope and is faux thermometer on another thread. Those party favors and his admiral's hat with all of the scrambled eggs have made him feel like God twice over.
He's producing what elephants do-do in such elephantine amounts: dung. And here we are cleaning up his mess.
I say let's reclaim that dung, hot compost the mess, and sell it back to him. The alternative is stinkin' up the joint.

@ Military Defenders
The point of this article is not to attack the military. You need to stop with your knee-jerk, attack anything you dimly perceive as being an attack on America, or the troops and THINK! The point is that as we've learned from:
The WMD's that Cheney said he KNEW without a doubt were there and where they were (THere were no WMD);
The aluminum tubes that the Admin presented as proof of Iraq's nuclear program despite the fact that our government's own nuclear agency said they weren't (They weren't);
The forged documents the Administration used to show that Iraq was trying to buy uranium from Nigeria, despite the fact that the CIA and British, German intel agencies had already dismissed the documents as bad forgeries(They were forgeries, there was no uranium);
The Iraqi defector used by the CIA as the SOLE source of proof (Curveball) of their claims that Iraq had mobile biological weapon labs, despite that he was initially dismissed by German intel and our own CIA as a nutcase until Cheney went down to CIA over and over to pressure them to come up with intel he liked. (There were no mobile chem labs. He was nutjob)
That the Iraq war would take 6 months tops and be paid for by Iraqi oil. (The head of the Military who ACCURATELY predicted that a force of around 400,000 troops was fired by Bush, The war is now in its 5th year and is costing close to a trillion so far and is expected to go higher);
Jessica Lynch was not being held by hostile forces, there was no heroic firefight to rescue her;
Pat Tillman was not killed heroically in combat with enemy forces. He was killed by friendly fire in an incident that was covered up, badly, and his family is still be stonewalled by the government to get answers.
What we've learned from all this is that the Administration is willing to lie, (at the expense of the military, you'll note)
AND
The press dutifully reported the governments version without ever doing its job of checking the FACTS which we as the PUBLIC should get from the press IF the government is going to give them to us.
So when things like this current incident happens, the question is not whether the MILITARY is lying or whatever, but whether the Administration either orchestrated it or simply took advantage of something routine or low key to blow up into something they can use to push for war in Iran.

LWM. Latex?
Just yesterday in a gas station rest room, I noticed Latex packs are priced at 75-cents.
I did not buy any or hang around thumping a sore rot-foot.
There was nothing that invited restfulness. I leaked and went... I'll nap at home.
Do you get three rubbers in a square, or one for 3-quarters? Who can afford them Latex's?
I noticed reading the ads and scribble on the walls that your e-mail # was everywhere.
You cut and paste from east to west. Heh. Huh. Incredible. Don't wake up anybody?
Wake up the dead adults. Put a protective Latex on their knuckle bone heads... ->

@ Admiral Sallus
Goodness gracious! A shoulder-fired missile, and an unbeatable one at that. Maybe we should keep the fleet in port.
As far as intent goes, GWB's intent, to put it mildly, has been clear enough for long enough that no one but a military channel addict like yourself could mistake it for what it is. If we wind up at war with Iran, it won't be a mistake, and certainly not a mistake made by Iranian patrol boats.

The Deafening Silence of the "Major" Dems
Writing on the Gulf-of-Hormuz incident at antiwar.com, Justin Raimondo calls attention to the latest example of Democrat complicity in the bellicose machinations of the Bushevics:
"It's interesting that none of the 'major' presidential candidates has spoken out on this issue: here we are, on the brink of war, and where are the 'antiwar' Democrats? Barack Obama is being touted as some sort of savior who can 'bring us together' in a Rapture-like mega love-in of 'national unity' and 'hope.' Yet Obama has said attacking Iran is 'on the table,' a view he shares with Hillary, Edwards, and all the rest of the Democrats except for Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel.
"As Bush travels to the Middle East to gather support for his campaign to isolate Tehran and declares that 'Iran was a threat, Iran is a threat, and Iran will continue to be a threat' – in spite of his own National Intelligence Estimate, which says quite the contrary – the Democratic presidential aspirants are strangely silent. Of all the candidates, in both parties, only Rep. Ron Paul, a 10-term Republican congressman from Texas, has warned about the dangers of another Gulf of Tonkin-style incident."

It's probably bullshit
But so what? It's just business as usual. We've got an empire to run, amirite? Secrecy and bullshitery are tools. Can't let the bad acting of a couple of goldbrickers stop the agenda of the Death Machine. That's where all of the big $_$ and power is at! Or maybe it was made to fail, send a subliminal fuck you. Don't want to get into conspiracy O_o
Oh noes, some speedboats got near our warships. Why are our warships there in the first place again? Maybe everyone needs to get into the Imperial Spirit. Some cheerleading is order. 40,000 lbs of bombs dropped in 10 minutes? A little bird told me that Depleted Uranium grows on trees now, and that Countrywide is on my side.
