Bingo!
I wonder if the outrage straight women feel toward male chauvinism is periodically tempered and quelled by this inevitable intimacy?
DCLaw... thanks for that insightful post. I feel just like Olympia Dukakis's character in "Moonstruck," when she finally gets what she thinks is the riqht answer to her question about why men stray... except that I think this question is much more interesting and difficult.
Ages ago, I posted something about this theory that I have that it's really women who want sex and men who want intimacy, even though the culture says it's the opposite. If you look at it all inside-out, it seems clear that women are conditioned by the culture to think that the only way they can "legitimately" have sex is by having an intimate relationship, and that men have been conditioned that the only way they are "allowed" to have intimacy is through sex. Unfortunately, one requires a longer relationship than the other... and there we are.
Those members of each sex who don't play by these rules are usually considered traitors to their sex, or subversive, at a minimum.
And that gets at the crux of your tempering and quelling...

Anonymust:
one of my favorite books is Frederick Douglas's narrative of his life as a slave?

Anonymous..
The reporters there, what a smug, self-satisfied, silly pack of jackasses they were. The conversations I had with them were occasionally jaw-dropping; their inability to follow even the simplest trails of logic and facts would sometimes leave me speechless.
Most people can't think, most of the remainder won't think, the small fraction who do think mostly can't do it very well. The extremely tiny fraction who think regularly, accurately, creatively, and without self-delusion- in the long run these are the only people who count... -Heinlein
It's not just reporters, it's damn near everyone.

@be bop-o - re: Words
POLONIUS. What do you read, my lord?
HAMLET. Words, words - words.
POLONIUS. What is the matter, my lord?
HAMLET. Between who?
POLONIUIS. I mean the matter that you read, my lord.
HAMLET. Slanders, sir, for the satirical rogue says here that old men have grey beards, that their faces are wrinkled, their eyes purging thick amber and plum-tree gum, and that they have plentiful lack of wit, together with most weak hams. All which, sir, though I most powerfully and potently believe, yet I hold it not honestly to have it thus set down, for you yourself, sir, should be as old as I am if, like a crab, you could go backward.

“I just think that gender is a stronger force than race, on the whole. Sure, there are exceptions and instances where this is not the case, but gender strikes me as much more "biological," again for lack of a better word.”
While biological differences and being the only gender that births children are important, I wouldn’t underestimate gender socialization. I happen to be a fraternal twin and was almost always around when my sister was being socialized as a girl and visa versa.
The major reason I believe that I am very comfortable around women and from a very early age recognized the unfair treatment and had a willingness to show my emotions was due to being a fraternal twin. That doesn’t mean that my male dominated society didn’t have an effect. Too many boys today are still being socialized like I was although fortunately many are not.

Pedinska...
...a little bloating complicated by mood swings isn't too much to ask, is it?
Not at all. It's the least we can expect a right to request. ;~) After all, what's a slight variation in estrogen compared with adrenaline and testosterone surges?

Re: Frederick Douglass being so amazing...
Kitt: Agreed. I especially love the way he describes having to "steal" his education. Back when I still kept my blog active, I did a bunch of posts on an alternative/shadow cabinet, and nominated Chris Rock as the Secretary for Education, with the idea that he'd proselytize (in my alternative world) about an education being worth "stealing" if necessary.
Then, it was on to banned books, etc. I figured that the NCLB was soooo far off the mark... that they were going about it all wrong. All of the emphasis should instead be on improving the education of black children and students, since white kids tend to emulate them, not the other way around. So trying to narrow the race gap in grades under the current plan makes no sense. But again, that's my upside-down way of looking at things.
More importantly, it was after the 2004 election, and I had to do something to bring myself around.

Lethal result in NH for country not fatal if white voters have courage to step up and change
the usual paradigms of leadership in the governance of our country. We are in such a critical junction in our country's history as we enter a new century.
Leadership is the most important factor which can take us to another level I am convince if white voters remain clueless my safety and liberty is at stake.
As a black man I will never allowed those things to be in peril. I will do whatever I can to prevent another decade of backward and underdeveloped leadership...

Almost ironically, the general necessity of intimate contact seems to periodically force detentes between individuals of different sexes. I wonder if the outrage straight women feel toward male chauvinism is periodically tempered and quelled by this inevitable intimacy?
I can only speak for myself, but detente isn't necessary if I only seek out men who respect women and reject chauvinism. Passivity and submission aren't an issue because I am being valued for my strengths. And by being at my side in the pushback he becomes a force multiplier. ;->
