Print Reporters Watch Too Much TV
Dowd's information that people working at the NYT are standing around watching television explains EVERYTHING about why print media is losing its market and circling the drain.
Who could have predicted that such a wonderful invention - television - would turn out to have such a godawful effect on our political discourse?

But maybe some chlorhexidine liberally rinsed (the veterinarians swear by it, and so did senior and ill and injured animals - even the humans - at a sanctuary), some sterile 4x4 dressings to keep it dry, and if itching, red, swollen or draining anything clear, some diphenhydramine (old frind Benadryl) and a sterile ointment with topical lidocaine (the 'caines kill the sensation). You can also make orange slowly for a deep lesion: thoroughly mix a cup of honey in one 16 oz. tub of betadine ointment and apply to the wound. No steroids, antibiotics, vitamins or heavenly hash, unless the physician has healed herself and is now healing you with a divine prescription and instruction.
And measure it's breadth, depth and length, its color, its shape and its temperature so that the enemy can be recognized and tracked during its retreat. No infection left behind!
That goes for the rest of you troops, too!

That is probably so very true. And, it's chilling to think of the degree to which Dowd has reduced the Clintons to mere objects with which she can trifle. The entire humanity of "do unto others" is remarkably absent. No wonder any number of people strike back (if indeed that's what happened in NH).
I worked with a teaching assistant in a college setting. The TA was not a native speaker, their skills in English were more than adequate but one needed to tune ones ears to move with the ebb and flow of a non-traditional cadence. There was one student in the TA's class who endlessly remarked - in front of the class - that the TA should speak English in the student's preferred manner; generally, being really disruptive. The TA was on the verge of confronting that student. I cautioned against. Told the TA to be patient, be respectful to the student, repeat what needed to be repeated in a genuinely helpful way. My prediction was the other students in the class would deal with the whining problem child. Within a few classes, the students exploded at the problem child. They had no problem "rescuing" the TA from the sly insults. Although it would have been reasonable for the TA to confront the student, there was no good way she could defend herself. She was a non-native speaker, and the students were going to have to tune their ears a bit. One didn't want to. The rest of the class told that student, "What the King of Spain said." End of problem. If only someone could say that to MoDo.

You're right about the inside baseball. Good catch on the deficit reduction thing, I blew over that.
Concur about the tobacc. I don't understand the allure of the commercail American, but I have rolled my own European. Still twist the occassional cut from the cigar shop.
Think you're overstating the position of most Drug Reformers by going the Libertarian laissez-faire route. I think it's more like, "tax & regulate sales via a mechanism akin to alcohol".

MEDIA IS LAZY, SELF-RIGHTEOUS, ELITIST - AND WRONG!
The media abdicated its professional responsibility to report the news years ago- it's too busy trying TO BE THE NEWS and part, or whole ,owner of their self-identified newsworthy stuff and people, mostly celebrities!
The media are a major part of the problem. They fabricated this horserace between Clinton and Obama, not resting until they had spun themselves silly into building Obama a message and getting this thing "just right." First, they build her up, then tear her down. Then they build him up and now it's his turn to be torn down. Edwards? Oh hell, they've wanted him, to go home since last year and have done their best to perpetuate the haircut and big new house crap ad nauseum.
Gee. Why don't we just have the media pick the candidates. They are all so smart and so knowing. The rest of us are just here to keep the crass commercialism and greed alive and well in America anyway. That's our role as Amerians these days: Consume that which we do not need or want.
The media do not respect us, the viewers. They don't respect our democratic process, and they damn well don't respect this country. Here's a news flash for ya: We can go a whole month without thinking of Spears or Hilton or the paternity problems of some NBA player!
I'm glad the voters of New Hampshire shoved it back into their faces for a change. But, don't worry, as usual, they'll be over it in a New York Minute - or the next commercial break.
