Illustrative New Hampshire snippets

The decisions of New Hampshire voters are not yet known. One can't say the same for the journalists covering the election.

The letters thread is now closed.

@shooter242

Could you point to the place in the Constitution where it protects the right of the media to hold information relevant to the fairness of the election as a corporate IP trade secret? Better yet, where it says withholding information from the electorate is a protected right?

RE So you people want stenographers now?

Already got 'em. As the last seven years will attest, they're every bit as dangerous to the country as the criminal administration they've created and coddled. Meh, indeed...

sad

I wasn't really a fan of Hillary but I can't believe she basically didn't to get to make her case to the people free of media bias. The media simply seems to hate Clinton. Have any of the people who say the coverage has been even been around for the last 15 years? Or do they just choose to ignore much of what has been said about Hillary? She has been absolutely savaged by the likes of Chris Matthews, Tucker C, and Dowd, not just the Rush Limbaugh's of the world. Everyone needs to be aware and ready to combat what's coming up for whomever the nominee is but looking at the response to Clinton's coverage, I don't think we are ready.

No reflection on you, Glenn...

...But it's pretty clear that the media has no interest in including John Edwards in their reporting...

But you know, who is actually listening to the bozos of the press anymore?

I'm watching that blowhard Tim Russert right now... he seems so smug and self-satisfied with himself and his opinions.

You know, eventually the mighty do fall...

Oh no tears are falling!

Glenn, it would seem all the tear shedding and emotional blubbering by the GOP candidates runs contrary to the "daddy" figure the right wing press craves. I don't recall daddy ever crying and getting misty eyed. Where's the expose from the Politico on "tear gate" and the estrogen riddled GOP?

Tuesday, January 8, 2008 04:36 PM

Troll, disabuse thyself...

"Much like moonbats claiming that the current Republican is the worst one ever..."

Yeah, illegal wars, illegal spying on Americans, torture, politicization of everything... Who could possibly get the idea that Bush is the worst president ever...

"...and trying to reclaim the heritage of past Republicans they slandered at the time with just as much enthusiasm as they lie about this one."

Geez, Ann Coulter is that you? Let me guess, Reagan really was a war hero and not a septuagenarian in the initial stages of Alzheimers, and Joe McCarthy really was a patriot, rather than opportunist-thug. Who knew?

Glenn's response

I thought it was an unusually clever rebuttal to an anonymous comment, then realized it was Glenn himself. Still clever, of course, but no longer unusual.

Thank you for continuing to point out what should be obvious. I might not vote for Hillary, but it is disgusting that her candidacy is seen as a last chance to Kill Bill.

@ondelette

why do you have such a low opinion of these people, called "voters"? why is there an assumption that they are programmed robots? it's true ... media coverage is alarmingly banal. childish, at times. but why assume that all other voting humans in this country are operating at the same sub-standard emotional levels as these media fools? yes ... some people are herded like cows, easily influenced. a war got strated as a result of this. but i want to suggest this: that the liberal "big fear" (that the country will get misled and horrible things will happen) is the same energetic as the conversative "big fear" (that a big bad terrorist will kill everybody). in order to move forward as a country, i believe these big fears must be confronted and moved through. i'm not suggesting that you personally "fear" this ... but I suggest that your comments, and Glenn's, suggest a mistrust. Maybe people are catching on ... that involvement in politics is a very important thing. maybe that's why reporters are spinning this and spinning that ... and maybe the people generally don't listen. maybe they are discerning, aware, intelligent folk ... just like you.

shooter almost has a point

But he fails to remember that the failing of the press we've been complaining about hasn't been partisanship in one direction or another but the simple withholding of truth in order to protect an incumbent as a source.

Certainly if a particular candidates stump speech was a pack of lies, we'd expect them to be called on it no matter what.

It isn't partisanship to hold officholders accountable and we'd expect no less, no matter who was in office.

Wait till 09. It should be lots of fun around here as we begin to defend civil liberties against the Democratic onslaught!

Tuesday, January 8, 2008 04:39 PM

Oh, Glenn . . .

I respect the way you fight for coherent principles instead of candidates -- and you're correct that the media's gleeful forecasting and schadenfreude aren't doing much good for anyone.

But I can't get exerted about that kind of stuff right now.

Just let America -- and the Democratic Party -- enjoy this special moment: this rejection of cynicism and dynasty, and this historic influx of young progressive voters.

In the past 12 years, progressives have had so few unalloted triumphs. What's happening in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina is an unalloyed triumph.

I can't remember when an election cycle has made me feel increasingly energized, rather than depleted. America is turning the page.

The only way things could be better is if HRC dropped out and made way for an Edwards/Obama two-way race; Edwards brings so much great stuff to the discussion, and it's a shame that he's been crowded out by the moribund, backwards-looking HRC candidacy.

THIS, not January 1st, is the occasion to say: thanks, Glenn, for your terrific work -- and happy new year to everyone else!

Reality

You know the American media is in bad shape when Hillay hater Lou Dobbs begins to state how irresponsible the media is regarding Barack Obama. Despite his lack of affection for the Clintons he talked about how insane it is to rule anyone out of the race on the basis of Iowa and New Hampshire. Already the Obama backlash is building about all this media worship but the real enemy needs to be Iowa and New Hampshire. It is long past time to go to a system of regional primaries, bring about Democracy, and take the winnowing and gatekeepers of those two states out of the political process.
