Illustrative New Hampshire snippets

The decisions of New Hampshire voters are not yet known. One can't say the same for the journalists covering the election.

The letters thread is now closed.

journalists

are my favorite vent. smart folks with large egos, driven to suceed...and when they do they go after cocktails supplied by the low bidder. it is startling the way they have rolled over for w. (who makes no pretense as to his contempt for them) and now have resorted to a sportswriters personna in covergage of a critical election.

a good friend abandoned j-school, fearing he was only good enough to do sports or weather. maybe i should call him.

L.W.M

My point was a little more nuanced than that, and I probably didn't make it well in the original post. I agree with you to some extent, about the intended use of polls. I don't believe that polls are used that way, however. They ARE considered accurate predictors of outcomes and handled as if they are objective reality; they influence policy, they create and destroy candidacies. As a case in point, I might point out that Clinton is about to beat Obama by the same spread as he was predicted to beat her. Many will call this an upset; but an upset against what? There was no race until this evening. You're right however, the snapshot did accuately point out that it wouldn't be Gravel or Kucinich who won for example. But I would also point to the self-reflexive nature of polls as one of the factors for that reality as well.

@ Anonymust & L.W.M.

Yes, Anonymust, what you say is true. Theoretically. But that L.W.M. is a slippery devil. Who knows what evil lurks in the minds of men...?

As for the Thrasher, could it be that he has a sense of humor, one which extends even to self-parody? Oh, what a tangled web we weave....

Being a fool is a lot easier, I have to say. ;-)

Bystander

This is exactly what I don't understand. You're right, no one knows to what extent the advent of cell phones has affected the outcome of phone based polling. Isn't that the point?

Ingenius Glenn

You've distilled me down to two words: Obama supporter. And without knowing, me, my politics, my background, education... name... nor even as it seems reading or considering my remark. Remarkable insight and pith. Absolutely astounding.

Back when I lived in the UK, there was a leadership contest in the conservative party- the one IDS ultimately won. The front runner in that race went down in flames early and the media relished it. I suppose you can't draw any inferences or conclusions from that either. Thanks for appreciating the depth of your readership.

Cell phones

Cell phones will be included in the process more frequently now that people can keep a phone number even when switching carriers.

I'm pretty sure, WT

...that Thrasher does have a sense of humor... one that enjoys getting a rise out of other posters. Self-parody, though? I haven't seen any evidence of that, since it would probably mean looking into the camera or breaking the 4th wall at some point, and in all of the threads where I've read him, I've never seen that happen.

We could use some more humor on these threads, though. Lately, they've been pretty shrill. [Can't believe I'm saying that.] And then there was the Great Cheese Escapade, which reminded me of a scene in one of Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next novels, where cheese rolling was an actual sporting event. But that was in the UK, and Fforde is Welsh, so it really has no bearing here, except that we did have a visitor from the UK during that episode... okay, I'll stop now.

Glenn, thank you for sharing that email with all of us. We know how important Bebop-o is, as evidenced by the piling on whenever a newbie dares criticize. However, it's gratifying to know that lurkers appreciate him, too.

I'm convinced there is a literary work hiding in his archives. Probably a play, rather than a novel... because then there could be a Greek chorus. And masks.

Clinton/Obama 2008

Beat that!

Monsieur Bop?

I am worrying too.

Would be no surprise if a poet and veteran perhaps lacks health insurance, but...I hope you do, and that you have someone to drive you to the doctor.

You are likely friend to all the bugs. Except that one.

Perhaps all your friends here could close their eyes and send you vibes. I am agnostic but still believe it works sometimes.

I'll start...concentrate...close your eyes for a moment and see Bop feeling strong, clear-headed, healing fast, enjoying an amazing night sky.

Bzzz. He'll get it. I bet.

@ L.W.M.

Our posts seem to have crossed. Everyone has a right to be angry in the midst of this mishegas, maybe even crazy angry.

Still, you gotta build coalitions if you want off the bottom. James Baldwin and Amiri Baraka were exquisitely, eloquently angry, and -- God knows -- necessary. Still it was folks like Frederick Douglass, MLK Jr., Malcolm X, A. Philip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, et al. who brought the fire down to earth.

Thrasher has his own path to follow, I've no doubt. I wish him well on it.

on Snippets...

what an illustrative word snippets is in this context:

snippet

(snĭp'ĭt) pronunciation

n.

1. A bit, scrap, or morsel: “sparkling black bass … strewn with snippets of coriander and basil” (Gael Greene).

2. Informal. A small or mischievous person. [perhaps a journalist w/ an agenda?] [emphasis mine]

Sorry, couldn't resist. Didn't GG say this was an open thread?

The canine candidate is getting unfair press coverage.

There will be no further investigation because the gun was covered with the chocolate Labrador Retriever's muddy paw prints she added.

It's not uncommon for hunters to be shot by their dogs.
