Jonah Goldberg and Glenn Reynolds warn of "social unraveling" if Obama loses

The emerging race-tinged attacks on Obama are but a small preview of what would be unleashed if he were the nominee.

Ugly Americans

Will always be with us. Remember Al Smith?

But, that said, they are (thankfully) a minority. Eloquence can go a long way towards neutralizing that poison in the politic.

thanks for the Swift link

I'm looking forward to Edwards being chased by papparazi!

Incidentally, I should have written "remember what happened to Al Smith." My bad.

eyes left

take a look just to the left of where this comment should appear:

Cary Tennis: "Our New Friend is a racist; should we dump him."

The oh so noble seeker of moral advice (or validation?) from Tennis is so far above racism,

My husband and I live in a small town in the same rural area of northern New England where he grew up. I grew up in a suburban setting in southern New England, but I have lived here my entire adult life -- more than three decades now. (I'm 49, my husband is 60, and we've been married 18 years.) I always knew this was the only place on earth I wanted to live (I have very strong family/ancestral ties here),

Oh -- an Indigenous American?

and I love everything about living here. I get along well with both "natives" and "transplants," and I am often mistaken for the former (which, I have to admit, pleases me, as I think it can sometimes be very hard to crack the inner circle in a small town when you're "from away").

What is New England doing wrong? Custer didn't have such a hard time "cracking" the "inner circle" of America's natives.

We have not yet confronted the enemy.

But it is Us.

Social Unraveling, Republican party and their DSA strategy.

The Republican party conducts itself as the DSA, DIVIDED STATES OF AMERICAN. The USA has nothing to do with their conduct. It doesn't matter who the Democrat is, they won't carry the south although some congressional districts need to be contested.

Evolution happens

If you had asked me in 1970, if we'd be a Black man would be a mainstream candidate for President in 2008 I would have probably guessed the affirmative. Asking me again in 1986 and I wouldn't have been so sure. What one generation sees as bold or shocking, the next generation sees as commonplace and wonders what the fuss was about.

Having said that though, It's clear, especially if you peel back the layers of civil condescension that repesents the face of the anti-immigrant movement, you see that there's plenty of seething hatred still to be tapped among the American electorate.

The question I continue to ask is this. Will the pundocracy, accustomed as they are to living among blacks and openly gay people without comment, actually allow the light to be shown on the dark underbelly of racist America, or will we see a concerted and valiant effort to shove the whole thing under the rug?

I know which way I'D bet.

Jonah and the "Southern Strategy" redux

Well, thank-goodness that there’s no longer any racism in this country and we don’t have to worry about that issue dividing us any longer. Michelle Malkin explains that Obama’s victory in Iowa proves that bigotry is dead and it’s time for the mainstream media and the Democrats to stop talking about it:

“Ok. Now that Barack Obama has won a resounding victory in 94.9 percent white Iowa, will the MSM and the Dems stop yammering about racist, un-diverse voters already? The bigotry concern troll act is getting old and tired.”

There’s one little problem with Michelle’s analysis, however. It wasn’t Republicans who gave Obama his victory – and they will be the ones (cue Jonah and Insta-racist) who will be using scare tactics, the code words, and not-so-subtle racism attempting to divide the nation.

Jonah’s “theory” of “social unraveling” is attempting to write in a way that appeals to the “subconscious” but Glenn has called him on it -- just like Bob Herbert called the Republican Party on their “Southern Strategy”:

"The truth is that there was very little that was subconscious about the G.O.P.'s relentless appeal to racist whites. Tired of losing elections, it saw an opportunity to renew itself by opening its arms wide to white voters who could never forgive the Democratic Party for its support of civil rights and voting rights for blacks."

The fear factor cranked up again

Fear based politics is these peoples claim to fame in a perverted political system of fear that only seems to become deeper all the time.

The great neo cons policy, Scare the hell out of people, and then when you are through, scare the hell out of them again. Keep pumping the fear out continuously and enough people may become confused enough to really screw things up in any movement the neo crazies do not like.

Comrade Rove tactics never seem to grow old to these cultural freaks that spread darkness throughout our system and misinformation.

One day we can hope that the majority of people will see through this crap and not allow it to effect them.

Obama won't win

Well I hope the dems don't make a huge mistake in giving Obama the nomination. Let's face facts folks, Obama can't and won't win. That's just a fact. Senior citizens aren't going to vote for him, especially white senior citizens. Older white people aren't going vote for him just because he's black. Seniors are a huge voting block, consistently showing up in every election. Obama isn't going to carry any southern states, which you need to do to win the White House. Overt racism in America maybe dead, but subtle hidden racism is alive and well. Remember the ads the GOP ran against Harold Ford last election? What kind of ads you think they'll run against Obama? Let's be smart here. If we want to take back the White House, which we need to do, the best candidate to that is Edwards. Edwards can win in the south. He's got a great populist message and is a real fighter. Obama is another coward like Hillary, afraid to take a clear position. Obama is also the corporatist media's choice. If the corporatist media likes him, you should ask yourself why. Obama isn't going to enact change. He isn't going to take on the corporate interests. We don't need another corporatist in the White House. We need a fighter like Edwards to do that.
