  • a stalking horse

i believe bloomberg is aipac's warning to the democratic candidates who might be insufficiently pure. get "right" on israel or he will run. to me that is his only function--the thing we're all supposed to be "unified" about.

  • On the mark again!

Greenwald continues to impress not only with his analysis but also because he always seems to step out in front of everyone else...........thank you, thank you

  • Gah!

Just when I think Obama is beginning to interpret where Independents are correctly:

    http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/12/30/free-to-choose-at-a-price/

    He does something like this:

Someone needs to tell Obama that he will not get every vote there is to be had. And, there are some votes he really doesn't want, if he thinks about it. He cannot be all things to all people.

Who will dump the religious nuts and violent extremists that were useful for coming to power but are increasingly a hard to control liability first?

I can't see Musharraf doing it because his religious nuts and violent extremists are his source for the massive funding the US sends his way. If he truly does something about them, his golden goose is gone.

Over here, I think it's more of a trick question. If Huckleberry shows more signs of success, some of the violent extremists will break with some of the religious nuts. They'll both claim the party, but the rest of us will party as we watch them totally self-destruct.

    Pass the popcorn.

  • Jim White and GG friends

I sure hope we get to see that party. It would be good for us and the rest of the country.

Speaking of parties, I hope all of you have a successful celebration for welcoming in the new year. I gave up partying a while ago, but it will be great this year because it will be spent with my grandsons while their parents are out celebrating and spending a safe night at the party host's house.

Finding GG and his friends has made my past year great and I look forward to even more fun and knowledge in the coming year.

    Thanks all.

  • that's kind of the strangeness of NYC politics

John Lindsay ran as a Republican AND a Liberal, his first time. Koch ran on the Dem and GOP ticket at the same as well, his second time. He was a liberal in name only, basically a moderate Republican, Rudy WAS a Republican. Bloomberg simply switched parties before the election.

The only two mayors who were Dem machine loyalists were Abe Beame and Dave Dinkins, the #1 and #2 worst mayors NYC had since maybe the 19th Century.

  • RMP

I sure hope we get to see that party. It would be good for us and the rest of the country.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here, but I did mean to reply the other day to your comment about having lunch with Jim White and the idea of a get-together at Yearly Kos.

After the first Yearly Kos, I probably wouldn't recommended that people go. I just wasn't all that impressed by it. But last year's was considerably better in terms of the speakers, the events, the people attending, etc., and although it had a lot of organizational problems -- it was in the worst possible hotel, this sprawling, airport-like metal and glass small city in a really boring part of Chicago -- there was really a lot to commend it, particularly the quality of the speakers, events, attendees, etc.

Austin is probably a great place for it to be and I think they've learned from last year's mistakes, so it ought to be better. Anyone interesting in going would probably enjoy it and it would be great to meet people and have some sort of get-together for anyone who wanted to go.

  • Disappearing Update:

That was me. Right after I posted it, Salon made this post the cover story, and the update was quite long and on a somewhat different topic and thus really should have been its own stand-alone post, which I will probably just post tomorrow.

I don't mind posting long updates on top of long posts if the post has been up all day, since I generally assume that most readers who see the update will have already read the post. But where someone new comes and sees a long post and a long update together, it can be daunting.

None of you is hallucinating - at least not about this - so that's good.

  • Another one Glenn basically pulled out of his ass for a high post count

No one, NO ONE, Glenn has been running around pronouncing the Evil Right Wing Jew Party candidacy of Michael Bloomberg besides you Glenn. I'm not sure any of your columns are honest any more. It used to be you just spent your days hurling shit back at other bloggers who said mean things about you. Which is harmless enough, but now it looks like you're just making up revisionist future history for laughs to see who believes it. If Bloomberg the Dark-ish Prince claimed he had no interest in running on the mainline parties more than 5 months ago, he's not going to mount a windmill tilting waste of time on a third party. Any person who doesn't wear a bike helmet in the bathtub knows that. 3rd parties are for rich NUTCASES.

Though it would be fun to watch, just to see the astonished snarling looks on the faces of the progressive liberals who's exploding heads will be audible from here. I picture Gordon Wagner committing suicide.

  • For those who don't know about Austin

    Thanks for remembering Glenn.

Jim and I were talking about how great it would be for all of GG's friends to get a chance to meet each other. This year it is called Netroots Nation and can be found at netrootsnation.org. I'm assuming from Glenn's comments that he will be there and that should give all of you more incentive to be there.

See you in Austin July 17-20. And the last day is my birthday, so you can help me celebrate that.

  • The Real McCoy

Assistant District Attorney John "Jack" McCoy and his equally fictional Unity08 Party have always left me with a vague sense of woe: I like Waterston, and I think he is a terrific actor (this is not an intentional "actors should keep their mouths shut screed" by any means, Sean Penn, George Clooney and even Sports Announcer-cum-Commentator Keith Olbermann have plenty of relevant things to say, not to mention Dorito's spokesperson and former South Carolina Primary Candidate Stephen Colbert). I do not think Unity 08 ever had any serious platform other than cooperation for cooperation's sake, which Congressional Democrats are doing a fine job of per se.

Thank you for clarifying for me my intuitions about Unity08.

Happy New Year, Glenn. Happy New Year, everyone!
