Glenn: I do not think Peggy Noonan is stupid at all; what I believe is that she is deeply, deeply cynical and is quite certain that her core audience is stupid. This Johnny Haircut is a Faggot crap is premeditated to emasculate Edwards in particular and derail his campaign because he is the one candidate of the "Democrat Party" who is strong enough to win, while refusing to toe the Corporatist religion's line.
Senators Hillary and Obama can win, no doubt, but both are dyed-in-the-wool corporatists: with either we may be rid of the lawless looniness, lazy ignorance, hubris and gross incompetence of Bush Inc., which is a good thing, but the US government will remain a wholly-owned subsidiary of the transnational corporations and the American middle-class will still be on a collision course with extinction.
John Edwards is speaking truth to the Neocon and Corporatist fascist power and that makes him the most dangerous candidate in the race - and it is precisely why the corporate media largely ignores him, except to have their errand boys (and girls) insinuate he is a girly-man!
Any person who writes that Dubya, Rude D, Gov. Huckleberry or Mittens act like reasonable adults cannot for an instant expect their thoughts to be taken seriously.

And you apparently forgot (or more likely never knew) that history's greatest mass murderers, Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot, were all motivated by the intellectual writings of Hegel and Marx and in fact justified their action precisely because of these men's ideas. Hitler was motivated greatly by the writings of Nietzsche.
Humanists also tend to be almost exclusively intellectuals.

Dirigo: re: Hillary's corruption
It was something of a surprise to see her get up on her hind legs yesterday and actually call out the Pervez (and Bush) regime about this whole Bhutto mess. Hillary's call for an independent investigation echoes Benazir's call to Musharraf after the intial failed (well, a hundred fifty died, but not her) bombing of her motorcade. It also echoes calls all over Pakistan for some kind of credible action; Pervez and his minions have no credibility at all.
Last night, most reports that I saw were still repeating the Musharraf Line uncritically. This morning, not so much. Indeed, skepticism is almost rampant. I'm going out on a limb, but Hillary's skepticism could well be the reason for current media dabbling in it.
Oh, but... we must not forget Benazir was corrupt (did you see that mausoleum? Whoa!) and so is Hillary! Rose Law Firm!!!!! Billing records!!!!!!

The newspaper, L' Est Republicain, quoted a confidential document from the French secret service as saying that "according to a reliable source, Saudi security services are now convinced that OBL is dead."
The newspaper reported that intel officials had been given this document, dated Sept. 21, to Pres Jacques Chirac, PM de Villepin, and interirior and defense ministers.
I've also seen some threads that Bhutto had said OBL was dead also. Chirac discounted the info-saying nothing confirmed. Sounded like he just didn't want to believe it since it came from Saudi sources. I notice OBL has not been mentioned in quite a while too-except when necessary when the scandals keep piling up on Cheney/GW---a convenient OBL vid will surface about an attack.
If OBL was dead-Cheney and Armitage would have no grounds to 'bomb Pakistan back to the stone ages" (an Armitage quote to blackmail Pakistan to let them launch war in Iraq) if Musharef or anyone else in Pakistan would not cooperate with them.If Bhutto had gotten in power and known about OBL being dead-it would most certainly be a threat to keeping people/troops/bases there-in order to stay as occupiers of Iraq.

I'm no fan--to put it mildly--of Our Glorious Leader, but this statement is actually true:
Just because someone doesn't use big words or make sense a lot of the time doesn't mean that that someone isn't smart and kind and doesn't have our best interests at heart.
There are a number of neurological issues that would make it difficult for anyone--brilliant, average, or otherwise--to express themselves verbally or in writing. James Earl Jones stutters when he is not acting (i.e., using words pre-written for him). Sufferers of dysnomia may have the vocabulary, but can't retrieve the words. The number of smart, successful dyslexics is absurdly long. Etc. These disorders are not connected with smartness, kindness, or having people's interests at heart.
I know folks like to make fun of Bush's language skills, or lack of them, but as the father of a couple of special needs kids, I view it as very possible that Bush has genuine neurological issues that give him problems. (These problems are often enhanced in a permanent way by drugs like cocaine, and alcohol abuse.)
None of which excuses him from being a complete incompetent, of course.

Yep, Benazir was always referred to, and is now referred to in death, as a "corrupt former leader of Pakistan."
So, is there any Muslim woman anywhere near her stature - as a woman of that faith who received an elite Western education and who therefore possessed a working understanding of the ways of modern democratic practice and governance - who could step up today in any Muslim country?
