Letters to the Editor

Thank you, Glenn
That was a very good summary of what happened, and thus an excellent article to point to when discussing this matter with those who are just becoming aware of it.

The most Orwellian thing about this
(cross posted from yesterday's edition)
is that they aren't covering it! At all, except for the usual suspects like Keith Olbermann.
I read the Chicago Tribune on the train and found no mention of the day's activities in the Senate. As I was leaving the train I saw someone had left the New York Times, so I picked it up, and as I walked to work I mentally composed an angry letter to the editor of the Tribune blasting them for not covering what I imagined had to be a page 1 story in the Times. Guess what? The Times didn't cover it either!!!!
One doesn't necessarily have to agree with what Dodd did, and I expected neither paper to. But to act like Pravda and decide this didn't happen, that I didn't expect.

@ GG
" ... successes like this can and should provide a template for how to continue to strengthen these efforts."
Via the Intertubes. Net neutrality, anyone? I don't need to consult my notes to know where the telecoms stand on that.

All I know is this:
We've lived to fight another day.
And my vote in the Democratic primary will be for Chris Dodd.
-
Maybe it isn't all over
My concern has been the destruction of the rule and law by the Bush administration. If the democrats are complicit, it is all over.
With the victory yesterday, maybe it isn't all over. There was wonderful dialogue on the rule of law and the constitution. The disgust in the do nothing democrats has been focused by this issue and other acts of complicity of the democrats. In particular, Harry Reid's true colors are now in full display. Time to sent him more email to those who are on the dark side, and notes in support of those who took a stand for our fragile republic. Our new senator, Sharod Brown, was one of the 10 who voted with Dodd against the 70 who wanted to proceed with the Intelligence Committee bill. Congratulations are in order to him.

There's one key component....
The most important lesson to learn here is that it always is possible for citizens to influence and disrupt even the most fortified Beltway establishment schemes.
One of the most powerful tools at our disposal is the simple fact that opposing immunity is the right thing to do. The American people may be frustratingly provincial at times, but when you put someone who's truthful and someone who's a liar side by side, they can usually tell the difference.
This is of course why the folks who tell the truth are routinely excluded from press coverage and misrepresented when they are not.

Either your writing better or I'm learning Legal jabber reading comprehension skills, finally.
It's a Big Tent Revival meeting Place here?
You 'say' words like "weed" and and "root" and "uproot"...
It's not a requiem for the country's democracy...Amen, bros and sister brethren! Glory! You make me merry hearted and hopeful.
I'd thought we'ed (not bad weed) need to have a public funeral dirge requiem mass eulogy to mourn the Death of Hope and democracy's notions last week?
~
~ You write, "spontaneous passion" helped, and 'it' was outpoured by citizens who care. I'm glad there will not be a public coronation in America.
And there never-
never-ever will be a crowning of a dumb naked-emperor creep!
I'll try to just read.
You Plant a good seed.
You have my attention.
Please be patient 'weed' me.
I'll go back and re-'weed' more slowly.

Mr. Greenwald,
This is a great piece. Your dissection of the events leading up to the temporary thwarting of this odious legislation helps to show that the power of the people can still change the direction of the power brokers.
In another thread, I mistakenly attributed the authorship of The End Of America to Naomi Klein, whereas it should have been to Naomi Wolf. This is a great book that examines the progression of the fascisit shift taking place in America. It is also a call to action to individuals to not give up their obligations to fight for democracy, much like your blog. Thanks for your continued efforts to keep truth in the game, and your assiduous attention to detail. There are a few George Washingtons out there.

Quite chafed by it all, were they?
...pure hostility from numerous Beltway crevices towards Dodd's stance. -- Greenwald
Yes. The anatomical image of overlapping rolls of lard about a belted waist is apropos.
Thanks to you and FDL among others.

And Paul Dirks' comment
...on Karen Tumulty's post about Dodd's filibuster threat is still highlighted on the front page of the blogs section at Time.
"Dodd is apparently the only candidate who's willingness to govern matches his desire to do so.
the others....not so much..."

It cannot be overstated that intelligent cross-pollination among blogs was one of the keys to yesterday's success.
