  • Reid's Office refused to comment

I just spoke with Reid's Office - they refused to even provide information on FISA or what Reid was doing!

    How's that for democracy!

  • Nevadans ain't the brightest, but...

via AP Nevada last year ranked 46th in the nation when it comes to the number of adults per capita who have earned two- and four-year college degrees, according to a new report.

I live in Nevada and I can tell you intellectual curiosity is not high on the list for most people. But does that excuse Reid's behavior? No; he's in somebody's cross hairs or somebody's pocket. Typical politics.

Nevada's other senator Ensign (R) has just announced legislation he is pushing to reevaluate the most recent NIE on Iran because we 'can't trust' the politics behind the NIE.

Besides, it said something other than what he wanted to hear...

  • Dodd's chance to break out

Dodd is a serious candidate, but in the second tier of Democratic candidates. If he makes a big issue of this -- stating loud and clear that it would be beyond unacceptable if Reid overrode his hold while honoring Coburn's and everyone else's -- then he has a chance to break out. This is his chance to stand up to Bush and Bush enabling Democrats like Harry Reid.

  • I've been saying this for a while

At some point, you have to conclude that the legislation they pass is the legislation they support. At some point, you have to conclude that the Democratic leadership supports measures that provide the President with authoritarian power, and that continue an occupation that is deeply loathed by their constituents.

  • My letter to Reid

Of course, by performing these parliamentary tricks with so little warning, I can't send a letter that will get there on time, so I'm forced to send a sure to be deleted email. I'll CC it here so that at least you can enjoy it.

    Senator Reid,

Who are you working for? Certainly not the Democratic party, since you do everything to lick the feet of the Administration, by ignoring Dodd's hold on the Telecommunications bill while honoring every Republican hold thus far. Not to mention the fact that you are introducing a version of the bill onto the floor that is very unpopular with your party, in favor of Dick Cheney's (Mr. single digit) version. And certainly not the American people, as that version of the bill practically insures that our phone companies will get away with getting paid to spy on us, all against the best legal advice any competent lawyer. But, then again, look at what happened to Quest's CEO when he refused to break the law. Are you afraid of something similar happening to you if you don't break the law and your oath of office for this trash?

Why are you behaving this way? I used to be a Republican before these fools starting running roughshod over everything that it means to be an American, did you switch allegiances because you like such behavior? Or do they have some dirt on you that is keeping you from acting in the interest of your party and to the clear desires of the American people? Read the polls, at least politicians used to be trusted to at least do that! And for God's sake, Mr. Reid, grow yourself a spine and do something useful to actually uphold your oath of office. If you can't do that, then please step aside so that a Democrat can take your position, and go cry in your beer down at the Capitol Grill with Lieberman and all the other two faced double-agents in your fractured, pitifully weak 'party.'

    A concerned citizen,

    ____________

  • You can place comments at Dodd's blog

    I placed this comment:

What Jim White said. I came here expecting to see Reid's Bush enabling shenanigans on FISA retroactive amnesty front and center. Thank you, Senator Dodd, for doing more than any other Senator on this by placing a hold on the Intelligence Committee bill, but we need you to do still more now that Senator Reid appears poised to ignore your hold.

This is your chance to break out by doing the right thing and standing up to Bush and his enablers. You could make an even bigger issue of this by stating loud and clear that it would be beyond unacceptable if Reid overrode your hold while honoring Coburn's and everyone else's holds on other matters. You could also encourage like-minded colleagues in the Senate -- including fellow Senators and candidates for President Clinton, Obama and Biden -- to join you in placing holds, daring Reid to defy the lot of you. There is no excuse for giving retroactive amnesty when we don't even know what crimes may have been committed.

For more, as Jim said, see FireDogLake and Glenn Greenwald,

Don't let Reid let us down. This can be blocked. Grab a megaphone.

  • Called Reid's offices

I spoke to a polite but obviously tired staffer at Reid's DC office. I asked about Reid's position on telecom amnesty and the response was that he did not know which bill would be brought to the floor. So I asked if it was possible that Reid would support amnesty since he had not taken the position of not supporting amnesty. Again the staffer did not know which bill would be brought to the floor. I asked why it was so difficult for the senator to decide for or against amnesty. Again the staffer did not know which bill would be brought to the floor.

I called Reid's local office in Reno and a very abrupt individual said he would send my question on amnesty to Reid in DC for a written response. The man said all questions are forwarded to DC and no positions of Reid would be clarified by the local office. Nice.

    Fuck you too Harry.

  • Not honoring a hold from your own party should be grounds...

For immediate dismissal from your appointed post. Period.

When was the last time a hold was not honored? Ever?

  • DC Pundits Carry More Weight than Voters

Glenn: "It's that he's doing what he can to support the White House, serving as their key ally."

Yup, just proves Glenn's point yesterday about the Congressional Dems wanting the approval of the Beltway pundits more than the approval of the American people. How'd this happen? Methinks that the Reids and Pelosis are counting on their constituencies not having any better alternatives to the incumbents now in office. Considering that voters keep returning these people to Washington election after election, I'd say that the Reids and Pelosis are winning that bet. The 2006 elections only raised their visibility in Washington - not back home. Therefore the message delivered in the elections did not impress them! When will voters demand accountability?
