Harry Reid's FISA games

The Senate majority leader appears poised to ensure that the Bush administration gets everything it wants on telecom immunity and new FISA eavesdropping powers.

With friends like Harry Reid...

...who needs George "Shrub" Bush???!!!

Friday, December 14, 2007 01:04 AM

So who is Reid's constituancy?

Who are these Bush Enablers working for? I don't get it. Republicans hate them more than Judas. Listen to what Limbaugh says about Harry Reid. So ... is it just corporate ties? Big money interests? Or is it really just a shallow media centric ego fest where we have Dem leaders pandering to the Joe Kleins of the world?

Reid should be subject to a Confidence vote ...

It is way past time to put Reids' bona fides on the line. Democrats need to let Reid know that his leadership is not in step with the Party or with the people of the United States.

Molly Ivins - Jan 20 , 2006 ......"What kind of courage does it take, for mercy's sake? The majority of the American people (55 percent) think the war in Iraq is a mistake and that we should get out. The majority (65 percent) of the American people want single-payer health care and are willing to pay more taxes to get it. The majority (86 percent) of the American people favor raising the minimum wage. The majority of the American people (60 percent) favor repealing Bush's tax cuts, or at least those that go only to the rich. The majority (66 percent) wants to reduce the deficit not by cutting domestic spending, but by reducing Pentagon spending or raising taxes.

The majority (77 percent) thinks we should do "whatever it takes" to protect the environment. The majority (87 percent) thinks big oil companies are gouging consumers and would support a windfall profits tax. That is the center, you fools. WHO ARE YOU AFRAID OF? "

What Molly said almost 2 years ago is more true today than ever.

Who IS Reid afraid of ?

GodDamnit, where is the line drawn ?

Mind-boggling

I just heard about this a little while ago and came to salon to see if you were on this yet Glenn. Thankfully you are. I'd heard this might happen but even yesterday didn't think it really could. Unbe-f*cking-lievable.

I was able to read through most of the comments yesterday (for the first time in a while) and had wanted to post something but ran out of time, as has been usual of late. But what I was thinking is even more appropriate now.

After reading several commenters suggesting the usual "the D's and R's are all the same and we need a new party" line, I found myself having my usual reaction, which is to say it's too unrealistic and we need to work to change the Democratic party to fit what Americans truly believe and blah blah blah.

But then I realized that even though I tend to dismiss suggestions of 3rd party almost out of hand, I actually agree with almost everything the 3rd party folks say about the Dems. Now I find myself wanting to grab the Democratic leadership by the throat and assure them that if this goes through I swear to god I'll do everything in my power to make sure none of them ever serve another term ever again. Harry Reid is absolutely worthless.

That said, even as I want to bang their heads against a brick wall, the prospect of crashing the two-party duopoly with any success is just overwhelming. If I thought it could be done with any chance of breaking up the iron grip of corporate corruption that has a stranglehold on the 2-party system I'd back it.

Short of that, the degree of shaking up we need to see in the Democratic party is no less than wholesale change of almsot the entire membership. That, or a level of threat to their incumbency that requires those now there to start toeing the line the voters set for them or be assured they won't be there for the next congress. Which, realistically, will require almost the same amount of effort it seems we would need to start a whole new party.

Maybe it will take the real threat that if they don't start answering to dems like me I won't be scared enough of what Republican Rule means to continue to be afraid of embracing a 3rd party option.

Part of the effort needed now is getting in touch with friends in Las Vegas to make sure they let Harry Reid know today that if he goes through with this he won't be around Washington long enough to see the damage he'll have wrought. What a monumental bastard.

Alas...

just when I think the Democrats have sunk to their lowest, I see something like this and realize, once again, I still ain’t seen nothin yet.

What do they have on him?

In an email alert from the ACLU, the writer mentioned a secret meeting yesterday between Reid, McConnell and Mukasey. One wonders what sort of goods they have on the Nevada senator.

In any case, this man should NOT be majority leader of the US Senate. He has caved to the Bush administration on every single issue that counts. He has betrayed the democratic base at every turn.

The moment the telecoms get their retroactive immunity for illegally spying on you and me, that will be the Democratic party's "Katrina moment." It is my guess that a large percentage of politically active democrats will simply be too disgusted to care anymore. If the Democratic leadership caves on this one, I for one will stop sending money to Democratic candidates. I won'e bother to make any more of those get-out-the-vote calls... that will be it. I can't let these cowards continue to break my heart.

I do wonder

Never have I been more curious to know what the real deal is with Harry Reid. I can't get behind the blackmail notion but this clearly stinks. Something is very fishy here, and it's time to flip the klieg-lights on the Nevada senator. To lie in the faces of his supporters as he goes about serving whoever it is he really works for puts him in a class with Cheney himself.

What a slimeball.

Nevada is a small state, and howls from there tend to be hard to ignore. If you know anybody there, get in touch.

I won't harp any longer

But if you can sit back and wait to see how this turns out without trying to do something you deserve what you get. The chorus of outrage about this should be deafening. It's an election year and there are Dem senators desperate to please you. They will respond if you let them know you hold them responsible. Reid obviously thinks he can get away with this. He has to learn otherwise.

I can't believe the balls on this guy.
