  • William, I'm borrowing this from you.

You said to him exactly what I have said to him in so many words before, because he does the exact same "absolutely nuts" shit to me that he does to you. It's gosh damned freaky! I do not exaggerate when I bold the "absolutely nuts" part.

    @ bucky1

It must be pheromones, or maybe it's the magic words. Anyway, here you are again. You do realize, don't you, that any contributor to UT can go back and read as many or as few of my comments as they wish, dating all the way back to Glenn's advent on Salon? Do you honestly believe that your characterization of me or my political views is shared by anyone but yourself? Whatever my faults, your interpretation of them is -- must I say it? -- absolutely nuts. I honestly believe that you need to find another hobby, or at least another bête noir.

  • @Sole Proprietor

I am optimistic, though sometimes I wonder if I have any basis for it.

Right now I'm incensed, and scared s---less about the legal issues hovering over the White House. However, I'm not in a position to do much but honk about it on a congenial site such as this.

As for the promise of a thousand Hunters (or a few dozen more Normans, or Trumans), it's up to all the whippets out there to make it happen.

I realize also, as I wax ecstatically about lots of hard news on blogs, making money at it is still problematic. I'm actually trying, with my ham-handed computer skills, to figure this out.

But I do think it's right there.

I live on the East coast; and in fact, I was going to to Amherst tonight and watch the Jonah Goldberg extravaganza at UMass. The whole flap about him, expressed here, whetted my appetite; and I don't consider myself to be a rabid partisan. I can get there in under two hours. Unfortunately, right now, there's a big storm blowing over the Berkshires. It's descending on Amherst and heading to Boston. I ain't goin' out. Presumably, the Republican wits had enough sense to cancel.

I would have been glad to have done some freebies on this for Salon - would have been a hoot because I'd try to write in a sharp and witty manner. Satire, if you like.

On the other hand (now this sounds brave!), I would have lowered my head into the teeth of this blizzard, soldiering on to Amherst for the betterment of American journalism, if Salon had paid me a handsome stringer fee, plus, hazardous duty pay.

    Maybe next time.

Back to Glenn Greenwald, I'm not putting him on a pedestal; I'm just saying he got it first and he got it right on the Joe Klein story, which may not be over.

    The FISA story certainly continues.

  • @Dirigo

Can't you arrange a proxy from someone, say, at the UMass Spectator? I'm sure they'd be thrilled to be working with an actual working reporter.

  • Democrats show Beltway "strength," avoid being depicted as weak.

That's what hucking Steriods will do for you, Glenn. You can almost feel a surge.

So, the D's Demand; "End the unjust, unwinnable war in Iraq by the end of 08' or ... it will be 09'". (Surprised me!~) I've heard it all, now. (*how can I rustle-up a game of texas hold-em with these savages?)

ot~ A.Gonzo ... Lawyer of the Year! WTF for, resigning? Will wonders never cease.

I'm all in. (*i.e. i raise your sarcasm, although I can tell you've got a pretty good hand.)

    Ace up my sleeve,

    bah.

ps. buck 09. We are (still) just 'one signature away from ending this war' ... but don't hold your breath.

pps. 'oh nine, oh nine, oh nine.' (*the crazy hippie on the woodstock PA system was... Joe Biden.)

  • I sense some sarcasm

What's the deal Glenn? Aren't the Democrats the "good guys" in lefty land? Where the glass is always half full and Utopia is always just around the corner but never reachable because of the evil marketplace. You wrote mean stuff about Democrats, I never knew you were such a racist.

  • ACTION ALERT -- FISA BILL MAY COME UP FOR VOTE TOMORROW/FRIDAY

Time to get calling! From an ACLU e-mail today:

    Dear Friend,

As soon as tomorrow, the Senate will begin to debate legislation that would give the president greatly expanded powers to spy on Americans. There isn't a moment to lose. Call now.

Even though the Senate Judiciary Committee passed legislation that provides greater protections for privacy and doesn’t give amnesty to telecommunications companies, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has decided to move the bad Senate Intelligence Committee bill. This is not good news for those of us who respect freedom, the rule of law and the Constitution.

Tell your senators and Senator Reid to vote against this awful legislation.

This Intelligence Committee bill, negotiated closely between the Bush administration and Senator Rockefeller, contains retroactive immunity for the phone companies that illegally turned over private phone and email records to the government and completely eliminates warrants and court review of government spying.

Instead of capitulating to the White House, senators should be listening to you. Recent polls show that 61% of American voters believe the government should have to get a warrant from a court before wiretapping the overseas conversations of U.S. citizens. And 59% of American voters reject amnesty for phone companies that may have violated the law.

Sadly, Senator Reid is asking senators to decide where they stand on spying after a secret meeting taking place today with Attorney General Mukasey and Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell, a day before voting is scheduled to take place. Director McConnell played a central role in negotiations around the Protect America Act and, acting on behalf of the White House, used questionable tactics and misinformation to convince members to eviscerate the Fourth Amendment.

Because this meeting is secret, we obviously don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. But if history is any guide, this meeting could be used to provide misleading information about the current threats facing America to scare your senators into continuing the Bush Administration’s secret spying free-for-all.

There isn't a moment to lose. Call now.

We each need to do our part. Senator Reid needs to lead. All of our senators need to vote against the Intelligence Committee bill, anything resembling the Protect America Act or any bill that grants immunity to telecommunications companies that have broken the law over the past six years. We are also asking senators to join the filibuster of any bill with telecom immunity.

Your call today could mean the difference between our continued freedom as Americans and a secret government operation with no accountability. Please join us now in fighting this bad bill, which goes against our democratic values.

Your continued actions and support have carried us this far; we cannot give up now. Don’t let history repeat itself. Make the calls, tell your friends and family and continue to carry the torch of liberty. Our country is counting on you.
