Time magazine refused to publish responses to Klein's false smears

Both Sen. Feingold and Rep. Holt asked to respond to Joe Klein's falsehoods. Both were blocked from doing so. UPDATE: Chairmen Conyers and Reyes, and Sen. Dodd, add their protests.

The letters thread is now closed.

Shameful and utterly arrogant

"What kind of magazine smears its targets with patently false statements and then blocks them from responding?"

The kind I will never look at again. Keep up the terrific work Glenn. Thank-you.

Look on the bright side

At least Time-corporate appears to be acting entirely out of self-interest and protecting its backside. JK on the other hand seemed to be beating himself over the head with a shovel anytime he wrote anything on the topic.

Unbelievable

What's truly sending me around the bend about this issue is that, by refusing to publish any letters or rebuttals from people who knew the truth, Time leaves the impression that there WERE NO such letters/rebuttals. As if the only complaints came from those silly blogs.

I wondered about Kurtz's online chat yesterday... thanks for filling us in on what's going on behind the scenes. It helps.

CT Voter

I'm cancelling my print subscription with a letter explaining how deplorable I find Time's response to the factually incorrect Klein column (and the equally disingenuous "apology" Klein included in this week's deadtree issue).

Tuesday, December 4, 2007 10:43 AM

Uggghhh

Is there nobody out there who will rein these people in? Have we finally gone round the bend and now corporate hacks who have elbowed their way into halls of power can blatantly lie using their corporate podiums?

Whether lazy or operating under an agenda, Klein's behavior is reprehensible. If this country were operating properly he'd be fire yesterday.

Its enough to make one want to sharpen the guillotine.

WOW

seriously, just wow. Call every one of TIME and CNNS competitors and ask them to investigate.

Kurtz double standards are well documented

Today he finally commented on the National Reviews controversy concerning the false reporting done by war Blogger W. Thomas Smith Jr., a former Marine. He then immediately took the opportunity to equivicate it to a 5 month old controversy concerning the New Republic. Even though this was covered extensively by Kurtz previously. Yet he managed to ignore the much more timely National Review's scandal.

Whenever challenged at his constant need to balance the rights malfeasance with a negative slam on the left its always justified. Yet he does not feel that standard is necessarilly appropriate in the reverse case. In fact he spends an inordinate amount of his columns acknowledging liberal bias and rationalizing right wing bias. The examples are too numerous to recount

a simple google search of kurtz right wing bias retrieved 167000 hits !

While the other side may claim liberal bias its pretty obvious Kurtz Republican operative wife certainly influences his bias's

Second letter to Stengel

I just sent my second email to Stengel condemning TIME's behavior on this matter and cancelling my subscription. I sent the first letter on the 27th and never received a response. Yesterday, I received another issue of TIME in the mail.

I've been nauseatingly polite up to now, but if I don't get a response by Monday, or if I receive another issue of the magazine, no more Nice Subscriber!

Time's, et al's turning radius....

....seems to be getting shorter.

Thanks...

For the great work, as always.

It's a slow and uphill battle, but your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

No Waiting Room Reading For YOU (Time Magazine)!

Yesterday, while at the dealership having the oil changed in my wife's car, I had the option of reading a recent Time magazine that was part of the pile of magazines on a table. Normally I would have reached for it, but no more. From now on I'll happily seek out quality waiting room magazines like Southern Living, Cat Fancy or Highlights before I open another Time magazine.

Venomous leftist bloggers eh?

[Time] refused the requests of two sitting members of Congress, both of whom are members of the Intelligence Committees and have played a central role in drafting the pending FISA legislation, to correct Klein's false statements in Time itself. What kind of magazine smears its targets with patently false statements and then blocks them from responding? -- Greenwald

This is faintly amazing; it is well outside the norm for a newsweekly to ignore this much effort from this level. And, I'd love to know if Rep. Hoekstra knew about their attempts to set the record straight before he smeared the entire effort as strictly the work of "venomous leftist bloggers".

A little quibble about referring to Kurtz as a "minion"; I know what is written is done. But, "employee" would have provided the same sting with less melodrama. The "flunkey" implication resides within the latter word as well.
However, in defense of melodrama, and if you would prefer to throw all caution to the wind, there is: "Running Yellow Dog of Republican Imperialism!!!!".

I don't think it would alter the accuracy of your piece.

And it would make Ché so happy.

Time Magazine's Founder Would Be Proud -- No, Really

The founder of Time magazine might find such tactics eminently approvable:

...During its first four decades, Time often operated outside the bounds of most journalistic standards of objectivity that we honor today. Henry Luce — Yale wasp and propagandist for America’s divine right to export its values — announced unrepentantly: "I am biased in favor of God, the Republican party, and free enterprise." He once told a colleague that from first page to last, "what comes out has to reflect my view and that’s the way it is."

And he had strong views — on China (a fervent advocate of the corrupt Nationalist government of Chiang Kai Shek), on Roosevelt (hated him), on Willkie, Dewey, Eisenhower (strong supporter), and, until proven mistaken, on Vietnam (backed the hardliners). "Luce never pretended that any of his magazines would ever be objective," says Alan Brinkley. "On issues he cared passionately about, he would brook no deviation from the position he held."...

Ana Marie Cox ..

I just emailed her asking if we'll get an explanation. I emailed her because she is supposed to run Swampland. I find it appaling that Rep. Holt didn't get to post his statement on Swampland. The traditional media is indeed broken.
