The leading conservative journal is caught in a far more serious scandal than the TNR/Beauchamp controversy that it helped fuel.

  • You can "bait" breath.

    Mr. Opus1:

It's "bated" breath, not "baited". Bated is a contracted form of "abated". Cheers and kudos for keeping watch on the right wing blogs. If I read them for too long they make me puke.

  • Tank Buttoned Up?

My email to him bounced, so either his mailbox is full or all this talk of ethics has given him the vapors.

Anyway, this is what I sent :

Well, after going off on TNR looks like you got your hand caught in the cookie jar of hypocrisy, there. Lemme know when those 4000 Hezbollah guys show up with their tents on your front lawn.

Bad journalism is bad journalism, and bad editorial oversight is bad editorial oversight. Just make sure when you cry for ethics and punishment, your slate is clean too. Otherwise you look a fool, a liar, and a hypocrite. Semper Veritas.

Here's hoping your journalism career follows the name of your blog, and goes into the tank.

And I signed my own name.

These mealy-mouthed mopes kill me. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

  • Irony

Someone going by the moniker "virtue[insert any string here]" who routinely counters any argument with "pathetic" and nothing else is, by definition, anything but virtuous.

Perhaps AdHominem001 would be more suitable.

  • Before you all get terminally righteous....

They falsely accused AP of inventing a non-existent source, Jamil Hussein, who existed exactly as AP said.

Sorry, but it seems that isn't true.
There is no one by that name, though theoretically there was a source. I say theoretically because whoever this guy is supposed to be, no living individual willing to take credit for being said source, has been indisputably shown to exist.

A wiki style synopsis from MediaMythbusters, the conservative version of MediaMatters pursues the story past the cite offered by Glenn. If you have some thing that contradicts this source let's see it.

  • @shyter242

I'm reluctant to give much credence to any "wiki" trotted out in the name of "truth in media" by one who believes we are winning in Iraq and that the Economy is Great(tm).

You can put that in your pipe and smoke it, Shooter.

  • tactics

"Most damning of all, Smith, in his post, continuously references the "critics" and "detractors" of his stories without bothering to identify a single one of them, let alone link to what they said in exposing his fabrications, and neither does Lopez."

This is the neo-con's favorite tactic in a nutshell: Impugn without identifying those not merely goose stepping along with the program without stating, much less defining and defending their own position. That way they dis the opposition while avoiding responsibility for having to confront the facts, and the truth that these facts support.

Great reporting, Glenn- fight the good fight!

  • it seems that isn't true

Heavy emphasis on the "it seems" shooter.

Knowing what I do about your reading habits, I know better than to believe anything you type here. I've seen way to many false assertions from you to think that anything new you type won't be more of the same. And by the way...Valerie Plame was covert....get over it.

  • Poor Michele!

Exhausted, no doubt, by her assiduous practice of cheerleading routines, she did not get the latest talking points on this topic.

Will she try to catch up with the current canards, or just let it go?

  • looks like someone's been reading Schopenhauer again

If you find that you are being worsted, you can make a diversion — that is, you can suddenly begin to talk of something else, as though it had a bearing on the matter in dispute, and afforded an argument against your opponent... The diversion is mere impudence if it completely abandons the point in dispute, and raises, for instance, some such objection as “Yes, and you also said just now,” and so on. For then the argument becomes to some extent personal; of the kind which will be treated of in the last section. Strictly speaking, it is half-way between the argumentum ad personam, which will there be discussed, and the argumentum ad hominem.

looks like someone's been reading Schopenhauer again

    -- Paul Daniel Ash

Or put another way, the question is, Shooter, do you have anything to add to the conversation in regards to Thomas Smith and the National Review? Is Thomas Smith a fabulist or not?

  • Rather than get all terminally distracted...

Let's just note that shooter242 offers an argument that, if true, contradicts one out of a number of examples offered by Glenn in something like the 20th paragraph of his post. In other words, even if we assume for the sake of argument that shooter242 is right and Glenn is wrong on this one example, it weakens Glenn's argument not a whit.

If you have something that contradicts every single one of Glenn's other examples, shooter242, let's see it.

  • No Reliable Opinions

With the surprising exception of Malkin's tut tut this story will not find traction in the rw blogosphere. They never recognise their own tripe even when it smells to high heaven. Honesty, integrity, shame, ethics: not in their dictionary.

The NR under William Buckley was a good read for those interested in Bill's use of the English language, and his way of making an argument. Nowadays the NR is a propaganda rag. Don't take too much notice of it. It has no credibility and low circulation.

You have got to be kidding. Wingnutty trolls don't do homework! They just want to get you busy doing it. The folks who engage them here have the patience of saints, I think.

  • Oh, Shooter

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) _ The Interior Ministry acknowledged Thursday that an Iraqi police officer whose existence had been denied by the Iraqis and the U.S. military is in fact an active member of the force, and said he now faces arrest for speaking to the media.

    .

Ministry spokesman Brig. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, who had previously denied there was any such police employee as Capt. Jamil Hussein, said in an interview that Hussein is an officer assigned to the Khadra police station, as had been reported by The Associated Press.

The captain, whose full name is Jamil Gholaiem Hussein, was one of the sources for an AP story in late November about the burning and shooting of six people during a sectarian attack at a Sunni mosque.

The U.S. military and the Iraqi Interior Ministry raised the doubts about Hussein in questioning the veracity of the AP's initial reporting on the incident, and the Iraqi ministry suggested that many news organization were giving a distorted, exaggerated picture of the conflict in Iraq. Some Internet bloggers spread and amplified these doubts, accusing the AP of having made up Hussein's identity in order to disseminate false news about the war.

Khalaf offered no explanation Thursday for why the ministry had initially denied Hussein's existence, other than to state that its first search of records failed to turn up his full name. He also declined to say how long the ministry had known of its error and why it had made no attempt in the past six weeks to correct the public record.
