Demand answers from Time magazine

The Time editors responsible for Joe Klein's "Shameful Journalism" arrogantly refuse to account for what they did.

The letters thread is now closed.

Craved His Approval?!?

In 2004 Kerry craved the approval of Joe Klein. Wow. That explains so much if not EVERYTHING.

All the more evidence that Dean should have been the nominee. Instead of listening on the phone to the serpentine Klein, he would have hit him in the head with it.

And the amazing thing is that what did Dean in was the scream. Not policy. Not a debate. Not campaigning. A soundbite.

It's high time that "centrist" democrats realized that we need to be listened to, not Joe Klein.

That guy really needs a nickname fast.

I have to say...

...that Glenn's columns and commenters here are of a much higher caliber on subjects that I am interested in than almost anywhere else.

Semiodd

Just think, you could have stopped right there and been the better for it.

What this all Boils Down To...

The poobahs at Time are stating that Ojbective Reality does not exist. Somehow, these guys think we must believe that there is no such thing as “Reality”. "Your expert says 2 + 2 = 4. My guy says 2 + 2 = 17. Let’s act like adults, admit that there is a reasonable difference of opinion, split the difference and say it is really somewhere around 10.5."

A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose. 2 + 2 = 4. There are situations demanding the grasp and acceptance of objective reality. This Time kerfuffle is one of them.

@generalDisdain

"if you don't like (or more likely, wish to comprehend) the writings of [The Poet], simply skip them."

Those posts might occasionally be poetic in an e. e. cummings/free association/beat poet sort of way, but that doesn't automatically make all of them insightful. Word salad is not gnosticism. People who object to hijacking of the letters thread are not all philistines who "don't wish to comprehend" the hidden truth and majesty of the posts.

Piling on Leopold

God, did that guy piss me off with that crap he pulled! I wanted to wring his neck!

Also, the consequences of his getting the story wrong were only on is career, and the reputation of Truthout. I don't recall it damaging Rove any. Whereas the Democrats are damaged a great deal when Time reports something that far off base. Big, big difference.

leopold

Oh, yes, Klein's errors are much more important, because Time is presumably a professional journalistic source with an editorial board standing behind its reporters, and TruthOut is, well, caveat emptor.

I just couldn't resist poking Leopold with a stick again.

Hi, Jason! *waves*

in defense of bebop-o

if you don't like (or more likely, wish to comprehend) the writings of bebop-o, simply skip them.

I sometimes don't have the energy to try to understand his/her words, however, that fact does not render their commentary as not being of value.

@john_r

Oh yeah, that reminds me: has Jason Leopold ever said who it was who absolutely guaranteed to him that Karl Rove had been indicted?

Major screwup, definitely. But Leopold has been fired from publications and does not work for any with the cachet of Time. Time presumably would also fire Leopold, so why not at least put Klein on notice that he better behave as a real journalist in the future?

Tuesday, November 27, 2007 02:32 PM

Re Jason Leopold

Hmmm... I don't recall Jason Leopold doing any Plamegate reporting for Time magazine or any other MSM outlet, for that matter. Sure, his reporting was shoddy and reprehensible, but also for a very underground outlet. So your example was hardly analogous to Klein and Time.

Nice try, though.

naming sources

Namely, the fact that establishment media outlets eagerly protect their sources even when those sources feed them outright lies in order to manipulate them into printing a false story. In theory, journalists are not supposed to protect the identity of sources who do that, but they virtually always do.

Oh yeah, that reminds me: has Jason Leopold ever said who it was who absolutely guaranteed to him that Karl Rove had been indicted?

You Know.....

.....it occurred to me just now as I read today's comments that you people are the antidote / counterbalance to the vapid drivel blaring from countless car-mounted televisions and the vacuous dreck staring from the umpteen tabloid covers in line at the supermarket.

The existential despondency that I feel rising (with my bile) at every snippet of talking-head browbeating, and every fragment of gossip-glutton nattering, seems to snuff out whatever infinitesimal hope I might, at that moment, hold for our species.

But when I see the work that Mr. Greenwald puts in, day in and day out, in the pursuit of actual truth against the backdrop of a postmodern funhouse-age resurgent with the narcissism of magical thinking, I am truly humbled. I am heartened, as well, by the often-incisive contributions of the folks in this comment section.

So: ondelette, Jordan Orlando, shotgunfreude, Yellow Dog, (just to name a few whose posts realy resonated with me today): thank you for the continual reminders that the glitter-strewn gutterways that are our mass media do not represent the best of our people.

Thanks, Semiodd @ 10:09

Boy do I completely agree with you about bebop-o!

I've taken to playing a game: reading the first few lines of a post and seeing if it's SO nonsensical & off-the-wall that it MUST be his.

I'm getting pretty good. But it's still annoying.

The Correct Correction . . .

Thank you for your email, I appreciate your comments.

TIME Columnist Joe Klein made a reporting error, which he swiftly addressed in his blog postings on TIME.com. In addition, TIME will run a correction in his column in this week's issue of the magazine.

Thank you very much,

Richard Stengel

Managing Editor

TIME

The only correction needed is for TIME to print, in full, Rep. Rush Holt's rebuttal to Klein:
