  • 6stringer: From the Zogby website, results from the poll

"A majority of likely voters – 52% – would support a U.S. military strike to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon, and 53% believe it is likely that the U.S. will be involved in a military strike against Iran before the next presidential election, a new Zogby America telephone poll shows.

"When asked which presidential candidate would be best equipped to deal with Iran – regardless of whether or not they expected the U.S. to attack Iran – 21% would most like to see New York U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton leading the country, while 15% would prefer former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and 14% would want Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain in charge. Another 10% said Illinois Sen. Barack Obama would be best equipped to deal with Iran, while Republican Fred Thompson (5%), Democrat John Edwards (4%) and Republican Mitt Romney (3%) were less likely to be viewed as the best leaders to help the U.S. deal with Iran."

This shows there has been growing supporting for a war among the American public, who have been softened up through the respectful hearing that Cheney, Bush, Podhoretz et al, have received in the media over the past few weeks. I have heard little discussion of the disastrous downside to military intervention, or attempts to put the Iran threat in perspective in the media, although there have been a few reservations expressed here and there, unlike the run-up to the war with Iraq.

That said, these poll results are discouraging beyond belief. It's deja vu all over again, as Yogi would say.

  • @ anonymous

Just to see your faces. Half of you will be astonished and the other half will, like me, be cheering.

are you also cheering for another 9/11?

and what is the basis for your sick fantasy? Are you another of those wrong-wingers whose only hope for electoral success is a terrorist attack to instill fear in the people? Or are you one of those deluded individuals who conflates a nation's people with its political leadership?

  • So Will the ADL Call Out Podhoretz?

    Just wondering

  • I respect Norman Podhoretz right to spread fear and war-monger but how about the facts?

Maybe Norman Podhoretz is still fighting the last war. In WW2 the jews were portrayed by Nazis as sub-human, tortured and gassed by the millions.

In the new war envisioned by Norman Podhoretz, the US will conduct a pre-emptive nuclear strike on Iran, the country whose moderate politicans in 2002 extended the olive branch to the Bush Adminstration and aided us in our puruit of Al Queda in Afganisthan.

I respect Norman Podhoretz right to spread fear and war-monger but how about calling him to account on the facts? His argument is thin and unsubstantiated. He does not explain why he thinks Iraq is trying to build a bomb and what he thinks they'll do with it.

I'd like to see Fareek and others respond in writing the Norman's best argument.

  • Let us laud Churchill!

Let us laud Churchill, who did see the light and fought in the early thirties alone against the irresponsible Baldwin government who appeased...

    Gandhi.

Prior to 1938, Churchill did not care about Hitler much, he was attacking his conservative friends for endangering the empire by appeasing Gandhi. And if not worried about that, he worried about the Soviet Union.

Furthermore, the appeasement goverments in both France and the UK were both conservative. And the political forces in the U.S. blocking a participation in the war until late 1941 (two years after the oh so cowardly Chmberlain declared war) were conservatives, that is republicans and dixiecrats.

  • re: So Will the ADL Call Out Podhoretz?

sure they will. Right after they call out Bill O'Reilly, Fox News Channel, Michael Savage and other reich-wingers who routinely and blithely compare their political foes to Nazis.

In other words, that will happen at approximately ten til never.

  • Full Disclosure

As you've pointed out before Glenn, one would think that WWII was the only event in all of history listening to these people.

I think the far more damaging (to the neocon cause) comment made by Zakaria last night was his argument that Podhoretz is not a credible source based on previous prescriptions for all out war vs. the USSR - and his accusing Reagan of being an appeaser by talking with the Soviets (he said this just before the last excerpted comment). I think it's worth it, especially now, to always fully disclose these "experts" track records. If Norm's (et al.) intro was prefaced with the fact that he was in favor of staying in Vietnam (even with hindsite), was an advocate for all out war with the USSR and was a proponent of the invasion of Iraq, the viewer would get a better sense of his judgement and credentials. This wouldn't be an ad hom argument(unless used to argue for/against the policies in question) - it would be the antidote to the running appeal to authority which we're all subjected to as media consumers.

  • The Pod

Seriously, does anyone know how old the old Pod is?

  • The world according to Podhoretz:

The problem -- Iran may develop a nuke.

    The solution -- Nuke them.

I saw that interview last night. I came away believing Podhoretz is a frightening, hate-filled individual. As if we need the likes him in this day and age. Small wonder things are so bad.

  • Thanks, Farid

In the view of those who are Serious and Thoughtful about foreign policy, Farid Zakaria marks the left-most boundary of seriousness. This is so notwithstanding that Zakaria is more a lapsed hawk than a liberal on any comprehensive spectrum of thought on foreign policy.

The good news here is that it is now apparently acceptable, and even serious, to say right out loud that Guiliani, Podhoretz and the rest of the neocon psyche ward are actually insane.

    Well, it's progress.

  • -- writebite

It is funny you should say that because his adminastration clearly does't keep a histoty book anywhere in the white house.

  • Springtime for Hitler in the beltway

If Adoph himself flew in, these turds would send a limo and pop big boners cause he was such a fascist-man.

Hitler is always on their mind, cause he was the first "true" NeoCon--endless war can justify anything.

Besides, their unifomrs are so kewl. David Prinz could take a lesson from Himmler on dress.

Somebody should punch Podhore in the face, hard, next time he pulls this crap.
