A bizarre, unsolicited e-mail from Gen. Petraeus' spokesman

An e-mail I received this morning from Col. Steven Boylan is heavy on petty insults but extremely light on the issues that actually matter.

The letters thread is now closed.

I forgot...

to include Admiral Fallon. In fact, you could consider writing the letter to him and copying Gates.

Too Typical

This Boylan email, has all the talking points and tone of communications from an in-law Navy commander & his family members that we received in April 2003.

Whether or not it really came from Boylan or not, it certainly came from someone of that mindset and reflects the ATTITUDE and beliefs of many who drink the Kool Aide and the rest of the 30%. They realize their House of Cards is in collapse and they have built their whole lives on blind obedience and advancing up the authoritarian ladder.

At the same time they like to say how today's military personnel is so intelligent; many of them regularly exhibit their stupidity. Some of the intelligent ones have gotten out because they could not continue to square their intelligence with their observations and ethics.

Thank you Glenn, for refuting this tripe.

Dissapointing Dodd

MTP was a letdown. No mention of netroots efforts, and they only spent a moment on FISA. Worse, Dodd seemed to be reciting studied talking points instead of making a conscious argument. Dodd needed to strip the issue down to its bare-bones. In response to the Rockefeller quote about the onus being on the Administration follow the law, Dodd mentioned that the telecoms have sophisticated legal departments, but failed to mention that a federal(?) Judge has already dismissed that argument as preposterous in a legal ruling.

Further, when Russert backed into the 'lobby contributions' issue- by attacking Dodd's history as chair of the Banking Committee and the donations he received from hedge-funds in the run-up to capital-gains tax legislation vote- Dodd defended the accusation well, but failed to address Russert's indirect attack head-on. Russert got away with arguing on one side of a main point of contention in the Amnesty debate- targeted, legislation specific financial contributions- without the initial complaints against Rockefeller ever being aired. I don't know how righteous Dodd is on the Banking issue, but I do know that he made a poor showing in the Tee-Vee debate over FISA amnesty.

Glenn is cool under fire

Glenn: I admire your poise in stepping back and carefully crafting a response to that screaming e-mail. It seems to me that Boylan had spent too much time with his scotch bottle, and is of the unfortunate constitution that he doesn't simply pass-out when lit, but instead tries fitfully to address what's careening around in his bleary mind.

I'm sure after hitting 'send' he congratulated himself for 'showing that S.O.B'. He probably spent the next morning trying to figure out what he'd done, even before looking for the dog that had bit him. Good for you in withstanding that nasty little attack.

The most amazing part

about this is that a person with Col. Boylan's lack of facility with the English language has a job as a Public Affairs officer and personal spokesman for the General leading America's War on Terror.

We are apparently in much more dire straits than anyone can imagine.

Your columns make me feel that I am not alone in my thinking

I feel so fortunate that we Americans have persons like yourself to provide the 'facts'......I have been a faithful reader of your blog since I found you and I have recommended your blog to so many people. Please know that your hard work means a lot to me and others.

@Ktwdawg

Agree with your observations. Chris Dodd just doesn't have the communication genes and willingness to show genuine anger. He can't ignite the electorate.

But, let's not let a side discussion on Dodd draw attention away from my plea to Glenn to take advantage of the colonel's mistake and draw further attention to the critical need for the military to remain out of politics. Gen. Petraeus is still getting away with his illegal political actions and it must stop.

Verify

Additionally, all of the adornments (titles and pre-programmed signature lines and the like) and formatting are identical. Most convincingly (to me), Col. Boylan has, as I noticed during my prior email exchange with him, a -- how shall we say? -- idiosyncratic grammatical style that is quite recognizable though difficult to replicate, and the e-mail I received this morning -- from start to finish -- is written in exactly that style. I don't see any reason at all to doubt its authenticity.

As the following shows, other people have had access to the titles, signature lines, formatting and grammatical style.

The best way to verify is for you to write to Col. Boylan and request that he quote back in its entirety your request in his response as a proof of authenticity. While anyone can hack a mail server to send a email as Col. Boylan, it would take much more to intercept your email to him.

Case of mistaken identity.

I think I solved it. While you were under the impression that you were being emailed by Col. Steven A. Boylan, I think there was some confusion. The email was actually written by Lieutenant General William G. Boykin. It's easy to confuse the two.

You might have prevented some of the confusion if you hadn't edited out the part where he wrote: "My God can Beat up Your God any day of the week - you athiest twit!"

Sorry, B

I'll leave you out of it. Can't blame you for that.

The most amazing part

about this is that a person with Col. Boylan's lack of facility with the English language has a job as a Public Affairs officer and personal spokesman for the General leading America's War on Terror.

Don't be so hard on Boylan. He'll fail upwards as long as Bush is in the WH. Medal of Freedom material.

FEMA official involved in fake press conference resigns.

On Tuesday, while “wildfires raged” in California, FEMA staged a live press conference at which agency staffers posed as journalists and asked softball questions. One of those staffers, Director of External Affairs John “Pat” Philbin, has now resigned. He has instead landed an “amazing opportunity” to head public affairs at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
