You don't expect the neocons to actually have to prove themselves, or do something as crazy as joining the military that's needed for all the wars they want other people to fight, do you? It's like expecting Israel to make it without American tax dollars coming - mostly - from gentiles!

    Perish the thought!

  • Aplogies to My Man Godfrey

Glad to know I wasnt the only one who didnt grasp the satire, although in hindsight should have connected transportation position & gravel administration. Went right over my head.

re: GG's later post to My Man Godfrey. Yes it was definately the reference to Maud Greewald that made it seem plausible to me.

  • They are Cowards in Every Way

They are nepotists, they avoid the draft, they send other people to fight their battles, they are apoligists for bad strategies because they provide the illusion of safety, they would undermine the constitution for the rest of us just so they can feel safer. In every way these people are pant wetting cowards who use every trick they can find to avoid risk and trouble for themselves. George Bush says "bring em on" and the neocons cheer but they only mean it if the danger is happening somewhere else. When it comes to their own homeland they will sell us all out just for the FEELING of security.

Yet all the while they are constantly allowed to strut around like John Wayne calling the opposition weak and they are hardly ever called on it except by people like you Glenn. These people are text book paper tigers. Even when they send other people to do their work, the war strategies are like a big oaf in a bar fight charging against a martial arts expert who floors them with their own bodyweight.

It's time to call these people on what they are. Cowards. Yellow. Sellouts hiding behind tough talk. Let the branding campaign begin!

    Hi, again.

If we're thinking of the same liberals-and-open-mindedness study, William Saletan at Slate shot a few big holes in it, I was sorry to see. (I don't have a URL, but I'm sure it's still out there.) The studies I'm more inclined to believe are the ones that suggest liberals are better informed than conservatives.

Also, I'm not entirely sure how the material you read on PTSD, while disgusting, really connects to the ideas you and I are kicking around.

Insofar as people raise their children with fear and a victim's mentality, I think it has little to do with politics. I think it's generally true that *as a political entity,* the right uses the politics of fear more than the left does, but that does not mean the Kagans or Kristols raised their children to be fearful people. It could mean that, or it could just as easily mean that they raised their children to recognize what works in political battles.

When parents raise their children to be fearful, or to see themselves as victims, I think it's about the *people* and not necessarily the political thinkers these children are being raised to become. They could well end up anywhere on the political spectrum.

If I'm reading you correctly, the implication of what you wrote is that many conservatives seek to perpetuate their conservatism by subjecting their kids to a form of mental abuse, whereas democrats are independent (small i), free-thinking children who grew up to find

the correct path. That's a little too easy for me (again, if I'm reading you correctly).

  • Face the Truth You Pathetic Piglets

"They faithfully follow in their footprints without wavering -- not only having their careers built for them by their parents and their parents' friends but also never deviating even slightly from the extremist political views that their parents raised them to spout. They are coddled, protected, sheltered recipients of endless nepotistic, parental largesse who never tire of sermonizing to the world about the necessities of self-sufficiency and meritocracies and whose entire world-view is driven by the insatiable quest to send other people off to one war after the next -- all while they insist to the world how their war advocacy shows how tough, resolute, and willful they are, self-glorifying announcements they make from positions arranged for them by their moms and dads."

We're Cheering out here. Glenn Has the Truth on his side. It lays bare their war-mongering insanity. Like lancing a boil on the pimply white butt of humanity. Somebody's gotta do it.

    Way to go Doc.

  • You've Got To Be Kidding... But You're Not!

J-Pod actually wrote a book entitled, Bush Country: How George W. Bush Became the First Great Leader of the 21st Century???

That is something that not even The Onion would accept in a 'fake' news story... too ridiculous to be believable. I mean, the 21st century is only a few years old - there's not exactly much to compare him to, is there???

  • The French

sure knew how to deal with useless aristocrats possessing an abundance of hubris and a wholly undeserved sense of entitlement.

  • Re: r€nato

In all fairness, if the book is subtitled "How George W. Bush Became the First Great Leader of the 21st Century," then all JPod needs to compare him to is the other leaders of this young century's first few years. If he can make the argument that Bush is a great leader, and the first of the century, then he's satisifed the subtitle's claim. He doesn't need a future historian's hindsight or perspective.

Your point would stand if the subtitle was "How George W. Bush Became the Greatest Leader of the 21st Century," but unfortunately, it isn't.

  • Sorry Anon, Not Buying It

I understand your point but my point is still valid. If my Phoenix Suns win their first two games, I could say, "the Suns are the first great team of the season!" but it wouldn't really be saying much, would it?

    From Publishers Weekly:

"Over the past three years, liberals have been far from shy in expressing their distaste for George W. Bush. Now conservative commentator Podhoretz (Hell of a Ride) offers up a thorough defense of the president as well as a scathing attack on his most vocal detractors. Podhoretz takes a series of the more popular attacks on the president" what he calls "crazy liberal ideas" and debunks them one by one. These include "Bush is a moron," "Bush is a fanatic," "Bush is Hitler" and "Bush is a liar," charges he cites as being made by some leading liberal writers: Paul Krugman, Michael Lind, Maureen Dowd and Todd Gitlin, among others. Podhoretz claims that the president is, in fact, an intelligent, savvy, principled and honest leader, who responded to the September 11 tragedy with inspiring courage and determination. Bush's presidency will be remembered as "one of the most consequential... in the nation's history." Podhoretz even claims that Bush is "the best presidential speaker" since Franklin Roosevelt. Moreover, he says, the intensity of the Bush-bashing cannot be attributed to "mere partisan rancor," but is the result of Bush's defiant and infuriating success as president. Podhoretz's book is polemical, written for a specific niche: conservative political junkies who relish cutthroat partisan politics. Considered in this light, the book is well done: provocative, witty, in-your-face and honest."
