  • Reason why flmboyance intensifys:

... as their errors grow, they intensify the flamboyance of their play-acting as war experts.

It's classic gambler's psychology. A gambler doesn't have to admit he has lost as long as he has a single bet left. Moreover, the more he loses, the more he'll risk. At the same time, his composure deteriorates.

When a gambler walks into acasino at first, he looks good, he's philosophical about gambling, he's polite as pie. Once he blows his wad, he blames everybody else for his loss, including the waitress and the deck of cards. Not until you cut him off and throw him out of the casino will he have to reckon with the consequences of his actions.

Same thing with these guys. This is what I think about when I hear they want to attack Iran, or when I see them get more pro-torture or more anti-muslim than right after 9/11. They're gamblers who have lost.

  • Limp Like Lowry

I think the real point is this, most Americans who were born post 1970 are so poorly educated that they will believe almost anything they're told by a "reputable", i.e. published, source. That combined with the pervasive corporate culture which dictates sucking-up as the road to career advancement has turned the US into a nation of little Nietzsches, who worship power because they will never have any themselves.

Nietzsche was an invalid who dreamed of being a superman. Most women would have kicked his butt if he had attempted to "take the whip" to them as he advocated. The same is true for the average power worshipping suck-up like Lowry. Emasculation is the problem which is the root of his blather.

  • From the mouth of a chickenhawk

I know this young man who fits the chickenhawk template perfectly: well educated(North Western and Stanford MBA), professionally successful, nerdy, really out of shape, neoconservative and a staunch supporter of the invasion of Iraq and of a future nuclear attack on Iran. I asked him recently why, since he is so gung-ho on a war that has killed 4,000 US troops so far, doesn't he enlist to help them out. His verbatim reply:"only losers enlist in the military".

  • Tiny winkies

Emasculation is the problem which is the root of his blather.

    -- Neo-American

This reminded me of the poster some time ago who, when confronted by a road-rager, would smile and say, "SSAYP". It stands for So Sorry About Your Penis.

Just brilliant (and terribly funny too).

  • ????

Perhaps we could agree on limp dick as an appropriate replacement for pussy. The former is accurately gender specific, and identifies the masculine fear which resides beneath the latter.

Or as someone I know says, "Big Truck, Little Puck."

  • I suspect the Prime Minister reads Glenn Greenwald, Diane

Diane wrote: "Imagine my surprise when I read an AP article yesterday that the Prime Minister of Britain is reducing their troops by 2008 because his Iraq plan follows the success of the US troop increase this summer...'"

Diane, I believe Brown has been lurking here. Brown knows very well that the surge did not work. He knows that Bush and his gang have been lying, lying, lying. But, like Glenn, Brown is showing this administration that there are consequences for their deceptions. He is using their words against them.

    Brilliant.

  • Glenn

Off this post's topic, but Mearsheimer and Foxman were on the PBS News Hour Tuesday night to debate the Israel lobby matter, and I YouTubed it, in case you and others here are interested. I had to split it up into 3 parts because it's nearly 12 minutes long and I've never been able to successfully upload videos of much more than 4 minutes to YouTube.

Here they are, in linear order:

    Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zcjsv_BHlYY

    Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj-fK224VkI

    Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUe8QL3dco0

Also, the News Hour has a page on this segment with the transcript and links to only the audio here:

    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/middle_east/july-dec07/israel_10-09.html

I think that Mearsheimer more than held his own here, and Foxman made a fool of himself by bringing up irrelevant points and obvious straw men, either explicitely or by obvious implication--e.g. critics of Israel and the Jewish lobby were anti-Semitic in attacking Jews and saying that they control the media and government, there's no such thing as a Jewish lobby, it did not cause the US to go to war, etc. Mearsheimer went out of his way to condemn any form of anti-Semitism and dishonesty, and to make it clear that he was talking about the ISRAEL lobby, not a "Jewish" lobby, and that the former does not control the media or government, but simply has much influence over US mideast policy and did have much to do with the Iraq war. Foxman, of course, either didn't hear this, or pretended not to. A shame that someone like him leads the ADL, and that the ADL has been co-opted to serve the propaganda needs of Israel's right and its neocon supporters. This is, I think, a very scary development that must not become a trend. Just imagine the NAACP or ACLU becoming the propaganda wings of the DLC and defending the latter against any criticism by lying about it or inventing straw men?

  • Sounds good to me!

Perhaps we could agree on limp dick as an appropriate replacement for pussy. The former is accurately gender specific, and identifies the masculine fear which resides beneath the latter.

    -- bystander

Not to mention emphasizing that Lowry's performance is, ahem, less than adequate, as Glenn has been pointing out about these guys for some time now.

Or as someone I know says, "Big Truck, Little Puck."

    -- notre druide

    That's good too. ;->

  • @everybody

Can we please get off the juvenile "dick insult"/"pussy insult" topic and back to politics?

  • They've always been like this...

Tangentially related, my buddy just sent me a link to a good Krugman article...

    Op-Ed Columnist: Same Old Party

    By PAUL KRUGMAN

President Bush hasn’t strayed from the path of conservatism. On the contrary, he’s the very model of a modern movement conservative.
