    3. Any bill that actually does anything will never pass the Senate, and if it is, it will be successfully vetoed. Nothing that Bush doesn't want will become law, and he won't obey it anyway. This horse left the barn last August and it ain't never coming back.

Fine. If a good FISA bill gets rejected by the senate, what Pelosi HAS to do is refuse to bring up any other bill, let the temporary FISA law expire, and allow the previous version of FISA to revert by default. If Dems lose a SINGLE seat in '08 due to this I would be surprised--and if they do, it'll almost certainly be a Bush Dog anyway, and losing a couple of them back to the Pubs would, I think, not only not be a meaningful loss for Dems (since we're going to stay in the majority no matter what), but also be a political gain for progressives, for the fear that it would put into Bush Dogs of the consequences of caving in to BushCo. They NEED to be sent a message.

I'm not saying that this is what she WILL do, but that this is what she SHOULD do, if she's smart, principled and still possessing any semblence of a spine. And if she's not, well, she needs to be replaced as speaker ASAP, since she's worse than useless to us.
