Re Why Politicians Capitulate
I think such fears may have been the cause of the original capitulations. I am now a believer in complicity -- that the current reasons for capitulation are to cover up past capitulation, done in secret, for which they are both ashamed and worried about indictment. After all, they capitulated on war crimes. I don't think "I was afraid of terror" is a good defense in the Hague, or before your constituents.

Uhmmmm....
Our political system is designed to work slowly... but we've seen what happens when a branch of that system decides to work quickly to replace what was with what is to be, ie: a Self-governing Constitutional Republic with an Autocracy, and the other branches go along, with not much more than pro-forma fussing over details.
In fact, the changes that have come about since 2001 have come with startling speed, and with almost no internal political opposition. There has been institutional opposition to various aspects of the subversion of the Republic the Busheviks have engaged in (signified by resignations, threats of resignations, and numerous leaks of the terrible things that have been going on). But political opposition? No.
Nevertheless, millions upon millions of American citizens have made clear their opposition to the Bushevik subversion, and millons of Americans have been aware of the dangers of this regime since well before it was installed -- against the will of the people as expressend in the voting booths. For the Palace elites inside the Beltway to be oblivious, when the People were shouting warnings and continue to, indicates something other than "slowness."
It indicates that what is going on is what those elites want.
And it has all happened very fast. At this point, it is not clear it can be corrected at all.

Ondolette, accept reality - your mind speaks TRUTH
Sooner or later it all seems to converge on complicity. I am beginning to believe that the reason nothing seems to spur these people into action, revelation upon revelation, is because what is being revealed isn't news to them. They knew, and they have been living with the inaction for a very long time.
You are absolutely correct in these thoughts and you must quit resisting them. You must quit with the nonsensical beliefs that the Dems actually mean well and dont REALLY support all this crap and that they really WOULD stop it if only they could. They are NOT being tricked. They are NOT being coerced by blackmail from NSA-obtained personal information of an "unfortunate" nature. They are NOT being outmaneuvered. The Democrats HAVE known, DO know, all about this crap and they choose to do nothing about it because they support it. They do not REALLY object because as far as the party is concerned, there is nothing to object to. The Democrats ARE complicit in EVERYTHING Bush and his GOP has done. They are fully on-board with EVERYTHING that Bush and his GOP has done.
Occam's Razor is your friend. If your hypothesis as to why the Democrats NEVER actually do anything to reverse a single thing that Bush has done requires some complex, well-designed conspiracy, or if it requires that they ALWAYS get outmaneuvered and by the hapless GOP, then your hypothesis fails before Occam's Razor. The Razor says that the Dems do NOTHING to reverse or stop ANYTHING BushCo has done for the simplest, most likely reason of all: They Approve. Accept this fact and nothing will puzzle you, nothing will shock you (as to their complete moral bankruptcy, our collapse as a nation, etc) because it is all to be expected given the reality.

And What If There Is No Corrective Action?
What scares me is what if Bush goes off to an "honored" retirement in Crawford with no "self-correction" by the American government before he goes? Even if there's a good Democrat that follows him, our reputation abroad may have been damaged for all time. And, even if the Democratic president reverses all the law-breaking of the Bush Administration, the precedent has been set for any other President to pick up those same "tools" and use them too. And, I don't even want a Democratic president to use them.
Somehow, there has got to be some real self-correction beyond a mere new election.

No Consequences for Their Treason
The intent, as it turns out, wasn't protect and defend at all costs(even if we bend a rule or two). The object all along was an imperial presidency. Signing statements, invoking ludicrous secrecy from congress and even the depts that were involved, were exercises in ending the quaint notion of oversight or accountability. What has made them so successful in their treason is that the only remedy to the problem is "nuclear".
A compliant press, a criminally enabling republican party, and the weak-leadered democrats have left us with this: cheney/bush will continue in this lawlessness until impeached. They are confident that wont happen.

Tired of sounding so conspiratorial...
BUT, one need not explain the modern media phenomenon with abstract theories involving questionable psychoanalytic arguments. After all, Moyers was speaking up, as was Rather. They both got canned. As I've mentioned here before, I think the CIA is involved heavily with the press. After all, they are the ones actually doing much of the torture. They are the ones to gain by legitimizing their practices. The WaPo is their home town paper. Why would the publisher of any for profit newspaper keep a clown like Hiatt when the paper's credibility and subscriptions have consistently dropped under his editorship? This also explains Olsen's appearance from the underworld, as mentioned in a previous letter.
I made the mistake of looking up "Operation Mockingbird" some months ago at a commentor's suggestion. Whether you like the conclusion or not, it seems more succinct than to ascribe the complete press asquienence to this behavior on the grounds that everyone coincidentally decided to cooperate in the same way. Remember, the CIA is off-budget, that is, we will never know how much they spend and on what.

Reasons why...
Re Why Politicians Capitulate
-- ondelette
I was taken aback when I saw Senator Boxer challenged on the campaign trail about Joe Lieberman and his record of backstabbing. She seemed to be honestly clueless about it. She was angered (for real, it seemed) that whomever was speaking to her thought that way about "her good friend, Joe". It was an astounding wake up call for me. It made me wonder if some of this nonsense going on in Congress is about these isolated Congress People being truly without a clue, due to their being so isolated.
