Fox News' attack on the honor and integrity of our war generals

Fox accuses the generals of "betraying" their own soldiers and putting their reputations and careers ahead of the lives of U.S. soldiers.

The letters thread is now closed.

Shock and outrage

totallyblase, your snark meter needs recalibrating. Either that, or the little light that's supposed to blink when someone goes over the top in putting you on is burned out. Still, I supposed it's difficult to have your audience attuned to rigorous analysis and then suddenly shift to parody on them. It reminds me of the experiment to see whether fish think or not.

Are you surprised ??

Aren't these the same guys who called Max Clellan a coward, and supported the Swift Boat Veterans? MoveOn.org is now receiving Millions of dollars in donations on an almost daily basis. MoveOn wins. Now we will be anundated with tons of left wing garbage to balance out the neocon propaganda Fox News floods us with.

True, however

Glenn,

You write:

"Taking the corrupt political tactics wielded by the war-hungry Right and applying those same tactics to them (rather than ineffectively protesting the unfairness of the tactics) is the only way to ensure they cease."

------------------------------------------------------

I agree. However, in isolation, the rush to counter-condemn Rush for calling soldiers critical of the war "phony soldiers" DID come off as an ineffective protestation of the unfairness of the tactics. He didn't accuse decorated military officers of "betraying" them. He pathetically called them "phony" as if his opinion on the matter actually mattered. Hardly worth the time and attention for a congressional resolution condemning him.

But this Fox News thing is much, MUCH bigger. Not only is it much, much bigger than Rush but it is much, much bigger than MoveOn.org. I mean, here we have a NEWS organization attacking decorated military officers.

I only hope whichever Democrat appears on Fox News Sunday tomorrow turns the tables on Chris Wallace and the gang. And the Democrats in the House and the Senate DO need to condemn a NEWS organization for engaging in this type of attack on our military.

Its a Whole New Bare-Knuckled World

You have walked away from a Constitutional republic in too many ways to play by your own rules. Whatever reasonable method regains our constitutional --quickly-- is the order.

Constitutional

Doh!

Another way the Dems are indistinguishable from Repubs

The needed remedy for Congress’ shameful actions last week is to rescind the resolutions they already passed. --Zack

Zack - on a scale of 1 - 100, with 1 being "absolutely impossible" and 100 being "certain," what do you think the liklihood is that this will happen? --Glenn

I agree with Glenn that this will never happen. Indeed, I don't see the Dems changing anything at all if they gain the presidency, not habeas corpus, not the spying program--nothing. Not without a fight from us. They will always have some excuse.

Did anyone see Rahm Emanuel on Bill Maher last night? The guy was desperate to avoid any conversation about the many ways that his party has betrayed the Democratic base. You could almost see him sweating. He kept trying to steer the discussion toward critiques of the Bush administration. But then he was asked about getting out of Iraq, and guess what he said? No one here will be surprised that he repeated the rightwing talking points about "supporting" the troops by spending money on better armor and equipment, etc. Well, the audience exploded at that. People were screaming at him from their seats. My peeps! It did my heart good to hear it.

But Emanuel's behavior and the audience's response to him made me think back to Bush's inauguration, when Bush, in his armored car, had the driver and Secret Service agents around the car speed up to get past the group of protesters in the crowd as fast as they could. That moment seemed emblematic of Bush's contempt for the democratic process and the voice of the people. And I think Dems like Emanuel may very well follow Bush's lead in avoiding any engagement with the public, seeing that their policies and actions are not supported by the majority.

For Emanuel and Dems of his ilk, Bush has given them a convenient cover, in fact. Criticizing Bush has allowed them to avoid any substantive discussion of their actions (or inaction). But that tactic is not working so well any more. How long before Dems start saying, as Bush has, that they don't care about the polls, that this is not a "popularity contest"? How long before the Dems start having press conferences with rehearsed questions from the press corps? How long before they adopt all of the directives of the Rove playbook?

Well, if they go that far, I hope people keep shouting loudly at them as the Real Time audience did.

"They... tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no..."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD5sahXoj0U

"I ain't got the time, and if my daddy thinks I'm fine..."

Congress and the Big Media being like the Amy Winehouse character in "Rehab"; "they" -- who are trying to get her into rehab -- being "us;" "daddy" being the Busheviks and especially Big Daddy Bush.

We're in a classic situation here, eh? And how do these situations usually get resolved?

The more we push, the more they resist, the tighter they cling to "daddy."

And if we let go?

"Just try to make me go to rehab, I won't go, go, go..."

(Meanwhile Amy Winehouse cancels her US/Canada tour... "health problems." Sure. Right. Anything you say...)
