Let's Pretend
This is all just "Let's Pretend" anyway. There is no difference between the two parties, you're being played like a cheap violin if you believe that there is.
If the Dems win the Presidency AND Congress, the same war-mongering will continue. The Dems will simply cry, "WE HAD TO DO IT, THERE WAS NO OTHER WAY TO STOP______(fill in the blank with current Hitler substitute)". The Dems are only the other actor in the same systematic dog and pony show.

too true
The Democratic leadership still doesn't get it.
With all the talk of "appeasement" in political circles, it would be worthwhile to point out where the real appeasement lies.
-
The basic reason why you shouldn't vote Democrat.
What will the Democrats have to do before the mass of liberals, frozen in fear of "wasting" their votes, actually stop wasting their votes and vote the bastards out?
Declare Bush emperor?
The Democrats don't want your vote. They don't want your support. They pour scorn on the leftwing blogs, and they are not prepared to follow their mandates.
And it isn't just the blue dogs. Pelosi took impeachment off the table.
So long as America's left is ashamed of wanting a better world, wanting government to work for America's people and wanting America to stand tall as a world leader there will be no liberal government in America.
So long as good people are ashamed to be good, evil will reign and it will make no difference whatsoever if the politicians in charge have a D or a R on the ends of their names, the pictures might change but the policies will remain the same.
It is time for a mass exodus. Your party might lose the next election if you vote third candidate, but at least you won't be voting for someone who thanks your support by calling you the loony left.
Right now if you vote Democrat you may as well vote Republican so vote independent and vote for America.

Susan Estrich?
THE Susan Estrich? First female president and editor-in-chief of the HARVARD LAW REVIEW and first tenured professor of law at Harvard? The one who wrote a book in which she stated that her proudest achievement was dieting from a size 12 down to a size 6? That one?
Pathetic lap dog. Better liberals, please.

Partisan exploitation of the military and the press
Can someone please explain to me why the press so readily humiliated Dukakis for donning military drag as a sign of fatal weakness, and then celebrated Bush's masculinity and strength doing more-or-less the same thing on that aircraft carrier. To me, these events have always seemed far more similar than they are different. I understand that one was 'only' a presidential candidate and the other already a commander-in-chief, but I've always thought that this is one of the most blatant hypocrisies of the press. It seems so completely obvious that the enormous discrepancy between the two characterizations can simply be explained by the party affiliation of the costume-wearer. And the manner in which "journalists" are permitted to continue to peddle this kind of absurdity is only further proof of the conservative/corporate bias in so much of the media, as far as I'm concerned. I just can't imagine any other explanation.

Whoops
That would be first FEMALE tenured professor, etc. My kingdom for a copy editor.

Rockefeller Republicans
While I can see why we should all be outraged. We still need to face the fact that the Democratic Party is filled with those DLCers. They are why and how we lost the house and senate for years. They will continue to drag us away from the true roots of the party. But hey, she is at least serious.

"Can someone please explain to me why the press so readily humiliated Dukakis for donning military drag as a sign of fatal weakness, and then celebrated Bush's masculinity and strength doing more-or-less the same thing on that aircraft carrier."
Their justification is that Bush looked better doing it than Dukakis. The reasons are complicated, but the rightward surge of the press played a big role.

The MoveOn vote: An embarrassing public display, or, why I'm ashamed of my party
Try as I might, I can't comprehend why Democrats went along with the MoveOn ad condemnation, unless it was out of raw fear. The right-wing noise machine is relentless; that's a given. The accusations by media "kewl kids" that Democratic candidates are weak and unpatriotic, as well as deeply "unmasculine", is egregious, but the vote in Congress tends to confirm their characterization of Democrats as totally spineless. What can be more spineless than participating in your own debasement and engaging in a staged, ritual spectacle of self-flagellation?
It amazes me how few Democrats had the integrity to stand by their principles. The Republicans bark out, "Jump!" and the Democrats wimper back, "How high?" There are shades of sadomasochism in this whole exercise. How pathetic can they be?

book name
you're writing a book about this, right? did you decide on a title?
matthews is a strange guy. the transparent absurdity of rich lowry questioning someone else's masculinity is completely lost on him. john edwards played football at clemson. whenever i see rich lowry i'm reminded of the scene in Office Space when Michael Bolton slumps in his seat and locks the door when he sees a black man on the sidewalk.

The book I'm writing includes this topic, but isn't only about it.
We've narrowed the title to 10 or so from the (more than 1,000) suggestions from blog readers. Still in the process of choosing the right one.

Cheese-eating surrender monkeys
Republicans say, "Democrats are too weak to stand up for America."
Democrats say, "We're not weak! We caved in to every Republican demand!"

Again with the damned MoveOn ad! It was a fucking blunder by the Left, let it fucking die, please!
"But the point of it, the only point, is to subject the Democrats to what Digby this week called a "ritual humiliation" where Democrats turn on their own side and denounce and demonize them in a way that Republicans never would do with regard to their allies. Democrats thus look weak and pitiful for complying, and on top of it, they essentially denounce a major organization on their own side as McCartyite, unpatriotic and evil."
Yes, it's true that no Democrat should have joined the Republicans in official condemnation of the ad. But this attitude "My party, right or wrong," has its limits too.
The headline of the ad was such a gift to the rabid right wingers of the chattering class that they should send MoveOn a big donation and a box of chocolates with a card reading: Please oh Please, do this type of stuff again!"
My name is still on the roster of MoveOn members even though I signed up in their first year and haven't had a damn thing to do with them since. When they first started, it looked like finally we were going to get a clean and legit grass roots organization that Democrats and progressives could be a part of that wanted to be serious and be taken seriously.
The 2008 presidential election is whole ball game. To win it means everything. It means life and death for Americans and the same for hundreds of thousands of people on our planet. But can MoveOn and other verbal bomb-throwers stop for just a second and think what is at stake? Apparently not. It's more fun to throw a fit like a two-year old and alienate and piss off all those voters out there on the Great Craton who could tip the balance to elect a Democrat to the White House in 2008.
Fight? Yes. But fight smart. Be disciplined. Remember that if you don't get the White House in 2008, you get nothing. Hasn't the last seven miserable years of living under these lawless sons-of-bitches taught you anything?
Yes, the Democrats are prone to suicide by the circular firing squad. They need to learn to speak and act as one, even when they have to give a little for the sake of all. But that doesn't mean they have to stand behind some radical fringe group that has veered so far left that they forgot what the goal is: Get the fucking Republicans out of power.
