  • When will people finally realize

that the reason that Dems are not meaningfully standing up to the administration has as much to do with complicity as it does with cowardice, if not more so? Sure, some of them are cowards. And yet others are simply clueless. But I think that way more of them than most people realize--especially among the upper ranks and leadership--are going along with the administration, or not really opposing it, because it serves their interests, and that of their biggest donors and supporters. This era's "culture of corruption" might be more of a GOP phenomenon, especially in terms of its more egregiously illegal aspects, but it certainly extends into the Democratic party, if not as much on a legal level, then certainly on a moral and ethical level.

Like Repubs, these Dems like their power and money, and are actively working to protect and extend them. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to get this. Human beings are corruptable, period, whatever their alleged "beliefs" and "values", and having a "D" next to one's name no more makes one an angel than having an "R" makes one a devil. So while I'm dismayed and disappointed, I can't say that I'm surprised at hearing about this--especially with respect to Dems who are aligned with the Clintons. I mean, Lanny Davis, anyone, friend of Bill, Joe, Scooter and George? These people might not agree with each other on everything, but when push comes to shove and their core interests are at stake, they pull for each other. This is what happens when power and money corrupt.

For more on this, read Digby's excellent recent piece on "The Village":

And Sally Quinn's revealing piece on DC beltway society 9 years ago (which Digby linked to):

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/stories/quinn110298.htm

Certainly not all Dems are in on the con. Perhaps not even most Dems. More than a few appear to be quite decent and principled--even couragerous and smart. But clearly, more than enough of them are corrupt, morally if not legally, or else this wouldn't be happening, and the 110th might actually have accomplished something in terms of ending the war and standing up to the administration's egregious lawbreaking.

But perhaps I'm wrong. That WAS a truly terrible ad, for which MoveOne.org's leaders should rightfully be deported to some undisclosed mideast country. And perhaps one can't blame Dems for wanting to make it up to the administration in these ways. It's the least that they can do, seeing as how terrible it truly was. Everyone KNOWS what an honorable man Petraeus is!

  • @casual observer

“The real tragedy is not that these shows exist and have a major impact, but rather that they are trying to provide humorous counterpoint to a "serious" media that doesn't exist.”

Very valid point. However, the comments that John Stewart makes often contain more news information than a normal satire like Saturday Night Live. His interviews of book authors can be quite illuminating. He and the show writers are very skillful at presenting factual, sound arguments as part of the spoof. Many of the young adult viewers hold the same scorn for the M$M as commenters on GG’s threads and get their news from the Internet and political comment from these two shows. I have shared my views about this with some young adults, including my sons, and they agree with me. Of course it is a very small, unscientific sample.

  • ("azh.") means age. Thus: assemble the young-- The young sense What is Garbage.

I hope MoveOn,com stays around to play a vital role. Dorothy Day mentioned that care and love in practice can seem harsh and dreadful, compared to naive, bland, and illusion of vain dreams- I expounded. Dag Hammarskold noted human must pass visa Path of Action if a want for a good smorgasbord is desired...Action.

Who cares if one is Buddhist, Hindu, Hasidic, Jesuit, Pietist, Pagan, Atheist or other, and promotes some random jarring "fluff?"

A garbage collector knows we have all become a people/nation of irreverent, 'garbage' and we have become a nation of decouples. decoupeurs.

    A garbage collectors.

THIS is no pro-FISA GG site. It is a likable anti-Delusion, pro-FEISTY.

Kitt- two 't' or one, you may get bruised, but you hop back into the fray. You are a delectable part of the smorgasbord.

    I like DanJoanquinOz @ 9:45, but, Kitt, AMEN, ya's Kitt Carson. O, Brother/Senorita.

    Svensker @ 10:13- No-Never Lose-Hope. I preach to me. Choir.

Damn, ya' lawyer DCLaw1! Ya's seems to understand the 'fine delicate line' and will Laugh Like A God would Laugh Last @ a funeral WAKE!?. good.

Laughter- @ - DC 11:11- can quell a deep horrible wail. I agree with a DCLaw1- a damn lawyer? gads. Yet, I agree, and okay...I'll say: a dead-killed victim of injustice will often 'post' a defiant statement toward the executioner, or Gwb's street slayer-murderer-- IN DEFIANCE- a upright hard-on! God be my witness. O, Jesua-etc-dot.com...says, oppose the LIES as that is a simple divine/human, o just requested!

    _

Oz is likable. If politico's invite me to their funeral Wake, I'll laugh @ the LIES with Oz? I need a R&R in Australia or Christchurch New Zealand? yes.

O, for a day of honest Eulogy.

I'm do contemplate a divine 'something' is a GIFT fer all of us and we are all a One.

    The idea is not banal.

    The thought is not scary.

I say, "we do need to care.

I spent a day listening to lectures about the "defenders of the frontier (1760's)." I say, let's hear historians that research Officers and Men of the Royal American Regiment/French/Indian/British etc.,(1763-1764)...AND relate some aplicable WISDOM!

I sad to declare: General Petraeus is a old historic Bushy Run - I'm slow to process General Henry Bouquet, and other questions, but I and other concerned citizens asked an historian, Kenneth P. Stuart, from Greencastle Pa., YET- I will say, in a question about comparison: "Will you, K.P. Stuart, contrast General Petraeus to a 'Plutarch's Lives critique? Make our era contemporary?" Horrible.

    He was Pissed.

    I go for chow.

P.S. The GOP will rest on the Sabbath, and take all they can steal on the Sabbath. Colonel Henry Bouquet got a bad wrap, and he said that,,,and I agree. The GOP wil steal all they can.

    And they kill.
